The Seyyida Hotel

Over The Seyyida Hotel

"Beautiful place and very good service in the center of Stone Town"

I was at Seyyida Hotel in the frame of a workshop which I organized there. The first thing that catched our attention was the beautiful interior with nice furniture and spacious rooms as well as the great rooftop terrace, which has a wonderful view on the harbour of Stone Town. The newly established seminar room with aircon in the basement provided us a quiet place to work without being disturbed. The management and staff was really friendly, helpful and reliable. The food was good and served in time (which is uncommon in Zanzibar), thus we could stick to our working schedules without problem. All necessary workshop facilities (beamer, flipchart, printer) were provided. Last but not least, we were able to use our free time very well, as we could easily walk to all places of interest in Stone Town because all was nearby. Although cars could not park directly in front of the hotel, this was not really a problem, as the next parking was only 100m away and the drivers are helpful with the bags. The alley to the hotel was a bit shabby (which some people could not like), but that is authentic Stone Town, and we never felt insecure. It was a bit noisy in the night, which I suppose cannot be really avoided as it is so central. The seminar room was narrow, thus we were not very free in the choice of table arrangement (the manager told us that the room would perhaps be widened). All in all, I would definitely recommend this place for both work as well as leisure due to its beauty, centrality and the great staff.

"lovely, stylish hotel"

what a gem, hidden in stonetown. great interior style, wonderfull rooms and great hospitality by the manager and her lovely personelle. the view on the roof, like all other pictures, are as wonderful in reality. the food of the rooftop restaurant is quite modest and very average in quality and manager of the restaurant is a bit cheaky and sloppy on the service (you don't always get what you ordered for...). all rest of service is great. very good additional facilities like a pool, massage, etc. you are right in the middle of the old stonetown in a local residents area. so you get a touch of that as well, and very close to the oceanwalk. be careful though when you come back in your room in evening: every evening they spray for insects (i think mosquitos, did not see any other insects crawl or fly - beside small gekkos in the hallway but they are cute). open up your windows briefly to get rid of the smell (and poison...)

"the Restaurant"

Best Rooftop Restaurant in Zanzi City. Fine Dining , Friendly professional staff. The Restaurant manager was well trained and saw to all our needs . The waiter and the waitress that served were truely amazing. The food was awesome . Their non alchoholic smoothies were devine. A must to all travellors .

"Great hotel in stonetown"

This is a beautifully restored old building very near the docks in Stonetown. It is mostly quiet with a huge family room on the ground floor (this has people walking past in the alley though, so can be a bit noisier than rest of hotel). Seyidda has a lovely pool and good restaurant with excellent roof top setting overlooking the sea. We stayed with our two girls (8&4) who loved it. The staff are friendly and helpful enough, at a relaxed Zanzibar pace 😊. I also had a nice massage in the spa room attached to Hotel. Only downside was the driver arranged for airport pick up by the hotel, who, although he waited for us as we sorted out a lost piece of luggage, had turned up in a battered up old car, with a very grumpy driver who stopped on the side of a dark road to refuel his car from a bottle he had. The hotel is on one of the small alleys in Stonetown so access is off the road at the back down a dark alley. We suggest the hotel invest in a lit sign at the back entrance to reassure people arriving at night. Also that the hotel arranges payment for the driver and charges to the room, as we are unlikely to have local currency or dollars of the correct denomination at 10pm straight off an international flight. Also WiFi was quite slow and intermittent in ground floor room, by the pool and in the rooftop restaurant. Otherwise a lovely and convenient place to stay. Would recommend it.

"Poor service and very rude staff...."

We arrived at The Sayyida to a less than warm greeting. Turned out the receptionist was being trained. The manager an Italian lady shouted hello from the back office and asked for our booking details. She then came out and said the room was being cleaned and that we could wait upstairs in the roof top restaurant. We were greeted by the waiter who was abrup but offered us a welcome drink, it took about 10 mins to get the waiters attention to ask for the wifi code which was wrong. We waited for 45 mins then realised our room which was being cleaned was a unmarked door which opened right into the restaurant. We went in whilst the room was being cleaned and shut the door to find we could hear the diners outside. We decided to speak with the manager (the Italian lady at reception). The conversation that followed was something we hadn't experienced in our two weeks in Tanzania. The lady was rude and insisted the hotel was full. She then called the waiter and asked him to move the diners to another table (away from the bedroom). We intervened and said that wasn't our complaint and that moving the diners was a temporary solution - to which she said "she was doing her job". Upon pressing the matter, she said there was a room available on the ground floor which needed cleaning also. We were told to go upstairs to wait in the restaurant. As we had already had the welcome drink no further refreshments would be provided. At this point the waiter decided to argue with us about our request to change rooms which was highly unprofessional. We waited for an hour and came downstairs - we met the manager by the steps and she claimed she was looking for us. We explained we were in the restaurant as instructed. The room still wasn't ready... This was 2-hours after our arrival. At this point we were tired and fed up of the rude service. We decided to check into another hotel. We explained to the manager we were happy to be charged for 1-night and requested a refund for the other night. Her attitude changed, she was apologetic and explained that she was having a bad day. She offered a free massage and dinner but it was a little too late. In the end we were refused the refund (our agent had pre-paid). In summary it is a nice hotel but the staff are rude and unhelpful. If you do decide to stay, please makes sure you avoid the two rooms that open into the main restaurant.
