Over The Seyyida Hotel

"Beautiful place, horrible service"

Right from check in we realized this place had potential. Beautiful exterior and lobby. Then the small problems with service started. Check in took a long time for the people in front of us & we waited patiently. Then came our check in, no apology of the wasted time and ours also took forever saying we only had one person listed & I had emails to show it was for 2. The receptionist fixed this with a smile but it was a little irritating when I confirmed numerous times via email and I am a travel agent. I mentioned we pre-booked a transfer through the hotel on a direct email, but they didn't show up - they didn't seem to care at all. Lucky we didn't prepay it. Please note there is no lift and you must carry bags 3 floors, especially if there isn't anyone around to help. We carried one of our bags and they found someone to help with the other. We went straight up for lunch where service was horrible, we felt very unwelcome and no one was happy at all. We weren't there much earlier than when it was stated it opened yet nothing was ready ie the tables pulled out, plates ect. The place is beautiful, great view and everything is stylish and decorated. Drinks we ordered were a water and coke and yet took 15mins. Lunch took 45-50 mins for just pasta, however I will say it was good food and a great view. We asked to be charged to the room and no one knew what we were talking about, they either didnt want to do it or had never heard of the concept which is silly for a hotel. Next we went to the room and I was appalled by the state of the hallway. Workers were polishing the floors with a thick watery sludge which made the already slippery floors, very dangerous. They didn't seem to notice us especially with the electrical cords in the water. Trying to navigate a heavy bag around a polishing machine that noone wanted to move on slippery floors was really bad. We walked past all these workmen staring at us, not one offering a hand Why did we have to have a room at the end of the corridor past all of this? The hotel was most definitely not full. I must say the room was stunning, spacious with everything we could want. They even had the finer details, like a flower on our towels down pat.The bed was big and had an ample mosquito net. Great View but balcony not big enough to sit on. The Pool was great, clean and the area restful. Bar doesnt look like it gets used so forget a drink by the pool. All in all the place was beautiful but the staff needing training in service and maybe even a smile here and there. Often we would ask a question and not even get a reply. In the restaurant they never approached us we got up to order, to pay ect. We were invisible. We also asked politely at reception if someone could call our guide for us, 4 people it took and none of them wanting to help us. I'm not normally a picky person, but when you pay to stay in a nice place, nice service normally comes with it, not here at all.

"Could not fault it"

beautiful, quiet and clean rooms and very friendly staff. Lovely fresh fruit and eggs offered for breakfast every morning and we had room service which was also tasty. Very close to everything in stone town, within walking distance of all main tourist areas. Stayed 4 nights in total, staff looked after our bags one evening we went to stay along the coast. Nice pool for relaxing in also, and it gets the sun! Highly recommend.

"Lovely place to stay"

We did visit Stone city at Xmas time. Very good impression on hotel. Friendly staff, big room, good food and wine, nice service on the middle of charming and lively labyrints of Old town. Beside the old sultan palace museum.

"Excellent Hotel in the Stone Town - highly highly recommended"

I stayed at the Seyyida Hotel during Christmas last week & must say it exceeded my expectations. I felt at safe and at home immediately. Check in was smooth, rooms are pretty big, clean & spacious & have all the modern amenities needed (fridge,tea/coffee making facilities, bathrobes) etc the decor was very traditional yet modern. Every evening for the turn down service the staff would bring a few cookies & place them in the room next to the tea making facilities - this to me was very sweet & thoughtful. The staff were always smiling & helpful without being too intrusive. The rooftop restaurant has very nice clean & tasty food with a good variety, prices are also reasonable & waiting time is ok too. During Christmas there was a Christmas dinner which was well organised. The view is by far one of the best from the restaurant of the Stone Town & the Sea. The restaurant staff were also very polite & courteous. The Hotel is in a good location & not too far from most popular places in Stone Town including Forodhani and the Museum, however it is not on the main road and the taxi/transfer vehicle has to be parked on the main road and a brief walk inside an alley leads you to the hotel. I personally liked the location because just nearby the hotel there were locals living so it gave me a chance to see the day to day local Zanzibari life & it really does give a feeling of being in the Stone Town, there's a small basic shop opposite the hotel for cold drinks or cigarettes if needed. The other plus point is there is a clean swimming pool at the hotel for those lazy hot afternoons when one just feels like chilling. Generally it's a safe property and Catia the manager was always around & was very kind incase any assistance was required. The only downside was that I did not enjoy the massage at the Spa - which I don't think is owned by the hotel, it's a privately owned spa. The treatments were over priced & the masseuse was horrible - therefore avoid if you can, Cinnamon Spa opposite Tembo Hotel was much better. Other than that I would highly recommend Seyyida Hotel and will definitely be going back!

"nice spot in Stone Town"

great, comfortable, well decorated rooms, nice location, even though you have to take a couple of steps walk from the driveway, nice breakfast, amazing view from rooftop restaurant. above all, polite staff and attentive management, and, as cherry on the top, the swimming pool (best thing ever in a hot Zanzi climate)!
