"Away from it all"
Getting to Bushmans Kloof involves a 3.5 hour drive northwest from Cape Town along increasingly empty roads and over a couple of spectacular passes. After the gate the gravel road takes you another 8km or so across a landscape that is very rugged, rocky and dry. It is a bit of a surprise (and relief) to arrive at the lodge which is an oasis of green with a large dam, small river and a few swimming pools . The accommodation is very comfortable - we stayed in a deluxe room which was a 2 room cottage with views over the landscape just metres from a small swimming pool. The bed was comfortable, the sitting room a good size (not that we used it much) and the bathroom had an excellent shower and deep bath. We found the food excellent for all meals (not that we did high tea justice) and enjoyed dining in a group on an outdoor terrace a couple of km from the lodge one night. Staff are all very helpful and friendly. I agree with a previous comment about engaging with the guide - I spent some time learning about Cape Leopards and accompanying my guide setting up a camera trap. Activities - I must confess that we did not go on the organised game drive and rock art trips having just come from a safari elsewhere. Instead we made the most of the opportunity to follow well marked trails across a predator free landscape catching glimpses of antelope and birds and spending time admiring rock art on the route. I would recommend walking boots for these walks. Overall very relaxing and comfortable - worth the not inconsiderable cost.
"On a visit along the garden route."
Wonderful position with lovely views out to sea. The land is full of beautiful wild flowers and a sea trip is very worthwhile. Saw wales and dolphins, swimming seals and penguins. Food at the retreat was top quality and we were very well looked after.
We spent 2 nights here in the Cederberg mountains. This is top notch- food great- staff really good. We had early morning excursion yo see bushman paintings 1-10000 years old- amazing. There are pools- one heated i think- and the Spa- which we used- again, top experience. Expensive but worth it.
Stopped here for 3 nights on a western cape trip. It’s a retreat, not a big 5 safari lodge. As a result the clientele felt a little older and perhaps a little less inclined to get involved in all the activities on offer. For example; for 2 days running we canoed on and swum in the dam alone. Bliss for us but people are missing out on everything there is to offer here. The guides are good. Engage with them. The night sky is stunning. Night drives are amazing for the breadth of wildlife you get to see - far more than during the day. The food is a bit OTT, esp High Tea and not quite of the standard it should be. The beds are ok but pillows either too hard or too soft. It’s a lovely place but a bit of ATD by the management could make it a great place
"Breathtaking & ultimate relaxation"
If there is a place that can be described as one of the nicest and unique places on earth, this comes pretty close to that qualification. No efforts have been wasted to make everything as pleasant and worthwhile. The ultimate luxury and relaxing getaway. And very private in a absolutely unique location and (natural and historic) environment. Lovely dinners under the breathtaking, crystal clear starfilled-skies, in unique remote places. Also the spa and wellness facilities, treatments and massages our outstanding. Another good ‘excuse’ to visit this unique and well developed retreat. Our sincere compliments to the families who created this during the past few decades. What an effort and dedication, and what a great way to put your money at work...
