Over Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve

"Authenticity and hospitality in everything, thank you Kagga Kamma"
Have been to a number of places in South Africa and countries further afield for nature based experiences. At Kagga Kamma, authenticity, care and hospitality was second to none. The staff are just lovely and when one engages with the staff, it is like watching a flower opening. Amazing people and equally sensitive to both the needs of those who sojourn and repast there and to the beauty, heritage and surrounding environment. I arrived at Kagga Kamma feeling a little unwell and as if by magic the staff, all the staff were on it with amazing hospitality and care. It was a care which was just like being at home. Thank you for offering a very special experience as a nature reserve, for the insights and expertise, and for a most authentic experience. Take the San Art field trip (Jason was brilliant) and star gazing (Connor was amazing), try as many different dishes as possible( Danni's table is excellent) each one of the rest of the staff are just lovely. As we say where I come from (which happens to be Ireland) "Beir bua agus beannachtaÃ" = "Much success and many blessings" to you Kagga Kamma and to your excellent staff. When my path permits, I will gladly return to stay longer. Thank you once again.
"A unique experience "
I have never experienced anything quite like Kagga Kamma during my entire life: A painful hours drive on a gravel road in the middle of nowhere was quite intimidating, however on the whole worth it. The scenery surrounding the lodge is simply stunning, and I don’t think there are many other places that have matched this. The seclusion of the reserve also added to our experience, and the distance from society was one thing I particularly enjoyed throughout my stay. The activities on offer are also fantastic: safaris with a chance of seeing animals such as leopards, a beautiful walk close to the lodge where you can observe the ancient rock art, and my personal favourite, the sunset tour-on this you do a short drive (on which you have a very real chance to find animals) out to a vantage point, and then you sit down with some light snacks brought by your guide and take in the spectacular surroundings with the combination of the sunset-it is truly mesmerising. These experiences were made even better with kind and knowledgeable guides, in our case Jason. However, there are some downsides to the place. The places you actually stay (the huts, the caves etc.) are not the best of accommodations, especially when you take into account the huge sum of money it is to stay here. They are small and cramped, and not particularly nice. Secondly, the restaurant at the lodge is not great-it takes ages for the food to arrive (up to 50 minutes!), and the actual food is very average. And lastly, as I mentioned earlier the drive is not nice, so if you’d like to avoid long journeys then this won’t be the place for you. But it really is the experience and uniqueness which you are paying for, and is fantastic if you’re looking something different to your typical holiday.
It is a long drive over gravel roads to this lodge. Be careful because we also had a flat tire. The caves are beautifully incorporated into the landscape. We got the honeymoon cave. No idea why, we had nothing to celebrate. The honeymoon cave is the only cave with a bath instead of shower. We thought that was a shame because we missed the shower. Furthermore, there are no hooks to hang towels etc.. The honeymoon cave is the highest of all caves and therefore not pleasant to sit outside on a cool windy evening. You catch the most wind there. The view from the other caves is also very beautiful. During our stay there was also a large group of people "from the management" who probably came on inspection. So there was also a kind of tense fibe among the staff. The quality of the food in the restaurant varies al lot . The first evening the steak was so bad we made comments about it. Even if it is not busy in the restaurant, it takes a long time before the dishes are served. In view of the "management", we were asked very often during the next dinner (by 7 different people) if everything was to your liking. We felt a little embarrassed. The mixed feelings: lodge is beautiful, there could be some things to be improved, service at reception and bar was fine, restaurant good be better. Morning game drive was 50/50.
Very peaceful and good for walking, hikes and swimming. Spectacular sunrise and sunsets plus moon rises. Fantastic rock formations and vegetation. This was our 4th time back over the years since 1999. Miss the drive to the canyon which we were able to do then.
"Excellent recharge time"
With the awesome nature and quite in the mountain air, one if able to switch off and recharge like few other places. The rock formations along the hiking trails leave one awestruck. Will easilly recommend this to anyone.
