"Lovely place "
Had a overnight stop here what a lovely relaxing place , our room had a beautiful king bed ,we had a entree each in the restaurant which was very nice prices may be a bit higher but u must remember where u are , our court yard room was great and we were pleased with the price . Staff were very friendly .
"Listen to the other reviews here..."
Short version: If it were half the price you wouldn't complain. Same for both the accomodation and the food. Complete verdict: This place could be awesome, but it isn't. To be fair it's not completely terrible either, but given the price point you'll expect so much more than it gives that it will seem like it's terrible. The room: it will likely have a stale smell when you arrive, but a couple of hours airing should fix that. You'll only be able to lock the screen door so don't waste time trying to lock the glass one. The bathroom will likely smell like a room full of teenage boys after an hour in a gym without a shower or deodorant. I've heard rumours of the hot water in the shower cutting off after a short shower. Only had showed up to like 3 mins so didn't notice this one. Here's the thing tho: you probably aren't here for the room. If it was half the price you wouldn't care. The food: don't even bother. It's way over priced and lacking in any imagination what so ever. They rely on you being scared to drive at night for fear of killing wildlife (valid fear!) and there being nothing else in the area what so ever. DO NOT BUY BREAKFAST AS PART OF YOUR ROOM! Seriously - it was very disappointing. Not bad exactly, but very limited. Better to have some milk and prepackaged cereal handy and spend up big on a good lunch somewhere else. Ditto for dinner - maybe get a BBQ chicken and some bread from Parndana and then head back, it's only like 40 mins away. The "wilderness": you may find one or two wallabies on site if you're lucky. Don't expect there to be an abundance of wildlife hanging around the retreat. You may be lucky here - but it isn't likely. To be fair - wildlife is unpredictable and it's not the fault of the retreat if there is none around, but don't choose this place on the sole expectation of seeing wildlife at your door. Unfortunately it's all about perception. For the price point the perception of what I got wasn't up to scratch. We only stayed here to make access to The Remarkable Rocks easy. If we'd realised it was only 2-3 hours from Kingscoate and Penneshaw we would have stayed somewhere else. If they charged half or maybe even 2/3's the current rates it may have been ok.
"Nice bush setting."
This interesting hotel is located towards the Southwestern extreme of Kangaroo Island and takes a couple of hours to drive from the ferry terminal at Penneshaw. Accommodation choices are very limited in this part of the Island. You do need to pre-book. It is right at the edge of the Flinders Chase National Park. That, along with the other National Parks charge a daily entry fee per person - worth the fee but be aware the one basic fee does not cover you for all Parks - you can buy a multi- park entrance but if you are only visiting for a short time and the distances between parks are large you won't get the value so we chose to buy daily tickets for the Park. The Retreat is set in nice basic bush land and accommodates you in rustic cabins connected around a central parcel of land with some fairly tame Wallabies. An onsite restaurant supplies meals and our dinners over two days were excellent both in choice and quality. A limited but very good wine list from local vineyards is available and the costs very reasonable. Staff are really friendly and efficient. The beds were comfortable and you get a fine sleep especially after a busy day exploring. The en- suites are of good size and comfortable and the supplied toiletries natural and of good quality. Some nights one of the staff members conducts nature walks for an hour after dinner and you can find Koalas and other wild animals in their natural bush habitats, well worth the walk, he is very good and entertaining. You are dependent on rainwater so that water conservation is important. Wi-Fi is complimentary but only accessible in the main office area and even then very patch. It is, after all, a remote location. Altogether a nice place to stay and use as a base to explore this part of Kangaroo Island.
"Location, Location, Location"
This hotel is a great base from which to explore the western end of Kangaroo Island. It's near Chase Flinders National Park, Kelly Hill Caves, Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and Vivonne Bay. Although the rooms are quite spartan, we did enjoy our stay here. It is very quiet and you feel immersed in nature. The Eco Lodge itself is best described as a barracks in need of an update. But the price was right. Eco Lodge rooms are very basic, average size with one tiny window. It did have decent air conditioning and a mini fridge. The shower could have used a good scrub. As others have mentioned, there is wifi only in the reception area (and that is pretty slow). The upside is that you are close to nature and it is wonderful to watch five wallabies wandering around the grounds at dusk. They appear quite used to humans walking by. The restaurant was really wonderful with an excellent selection of dishes all beautifully prepared and a good selection of local and international wine. They also offered many vegetarian dishes and a kid's menu. Be sure to make a reservation for dinner and show up before 7 pm, when all the outdoor tables are full. One of the highlights of our stay was the night walk at nearby Hanson Bay Wildlife Park. Our guide was extremely informative and we saw many kangaroos, wallabies, koalas and possums. It is only a five minute drive from the hotel but you do need to drive slowly after dusk, as that is when the animals are out. No one mentioned the free night time wildlife walk at the hotel when we checked in. If we were to stay here again, we would book the larger rooms (they all have porches) where you can watch the wildlife pass by from your front door. Since this hotel is a two hour drive from the ferry, don't catch the last ferry and arrive at night (there are too many animals on the road). Take a morning ferry and slowly make your way across the island. Or stay in Kingscote or American River your first night and then make your way here. It's a great introduction to this special place.
Ideally located at the opposite end of the island from the Sealink Ferry terminal, adjacent to the Flinders National Park, this Lodge is remote and gives one a good sense of being surrounded by nature. Considering this, the accomodation itself is very comfortable, spacious rooms with aircon, mini bar, safe, tv and porch. The reception area is a bit basic - as you'd expect - and is the only place where wifi is available. Eating options on the island are very limited and we had dinner at the resort. Not bad at all. Continental breakfast was included in our booking, and that was very good. The receptionist on duty when we were there was very helpful and informative. There's plenty of wildlife on and around the site, and we enjoyed a great nocturnal tour at the nearby Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
