Over Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat

Our favorite

"Our First Echidnas..."

The Retreat's location is perfect for excursions to nearby Flinders Chase National Park but also allows for day trips to the island's North Coast (e.g. Stokes Bay). Our cottage room with a terrace looking onto the courtyard garden was basic but clean and the bed was comfortable. For lack of alternatives we had all dinners and breakfast at Baudin's. The staff was nice, the food (garlic prawns, kangaroo) was absolutely ok considering the isolated location. We had been given a warm welcome by the reception manager (sorry - I forgot the name) and are particularly grateful for his tip to go for a walk along the telephone poles before dusk in case we were interested to see some echidnas. We did see three of them and felt really thrilled...

"Should have stayed longer"

First night ever in Australia! After a long flight then 3 hour drive and ferry from Adelaide, we checked in at the wilderness retreat to a very friendly host who explained the property and amenities. We experienced amazing animal life and we bewildered with real wallabies just wandering around! We purchased a local bottle of wine from the gift shop and just relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. Taking a walk around the beautiful reserve in such a remote location yet central to all that the island has to offer.

"The three "Ls""

There are three reasons to stay at this place, and they are important: Location, location and location. The facility itself is rustic and basic. Rooms are simple but clean with small decks that look onto a central garden. They are not especially private. The only food option for breakfast and dinner is at the restaurant, which is expensive because it can be. The resident wallabies and other wildlife are adorable. The big draw--and it really is worth it--is that it's right down the road from Flinders Chase. Flinders Chase is first of all, MAGNIFICENT--wonderful hikes, wildlife, if you are an outdoorsy type you could spend days here and never be bored (plus the cafe has pretty good food). The advantage of being at KIWR is that you can get to the park first thing in the morning and spend the whole day there. KI is a big island, and staying in Kingscote or American River means you'll have to drive a couple of hours each way to go to the park which just doesn't leave enough time to enjoy it. So do stay here, but understand why you're doing it and you will be richly rewarded.

"Wildlife at the back door"

Loved staying here. At night we sat on the back verandah outside our room and watched the wallabies and possums. In the morning we woke to a beautiful melody of birds. Fantastic to stay with all the natural beauty of this end of Kangaroo Island within easy distance.

"Kangaroo Island and Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat review"

Kangaroo Island is an interesting spot. Its a 30min flight or a 45min ferry ride from Adelaide. We flew. Flying into Kingscote airport was easy enough as was picking up the prepaid hire car ( Suggest you do Thi if you want to ensure you have a car and intend on travelling around the island ). Heading down to Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat however was a different story. We arrived in the evening about 6.30pm so of course it was dark. The roads are good and pretty straight but of course are not lit so Wallabies and Roos on the road are a major issue. There is roadkill everywhere and lots of animals bouncing into the road so I would keep your speed at 80kms or less. The trip from the airport is about 75-90mins. There are no petrol stations. I think there is one in Kingscote and there fortunately is one at the Retreat but not many else where. The big problem for me is the lack of signs telling you where places are. Admittedly its pretty much impossible to get lost but I like to know how far it is to my location and of course my telephone did not work on the island at it was with a different carrier( I think the island is Telstra and I don't think much else works ) So the first sign to the Retreat is small and about 400 metres to the Retreat entrance so pay attention. The Retreat itself is perfect. Darren the onsite Manager and the kitchen staff Jenny and Daniel were lovely. The rooms are good and easy for the single traveller or families. The food at the return is excellent which is good because there is pretty much no where else to eat. The location is perfect to explore the west, north and south of the island. Kingscote to the Retreat is about 100kms. Flinders Chase National Park is 2kms from the Retreat and well worth a visit for the Fur Seals, The Remarkables and the Arch. The beaches on the North Coast are lovely and there are some great places to visit. Raptor World is the best tourist attraction by far as the chance for interaction with birds and snakes is excellent as are the staff who are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. This seems to be unusual. Most of the staff who worked in the tourist spots were clearly miserable, disliked their job and people this was most evident at Seal Bay where the guide we had was just rude and clearly hated people. So if you want to see Seals this is a great spot but just be aware that some of the humans are pretty rude. Customer service is something they just do not understand. Fortunately this is not the case at the Retreat which as I mentioned earlier was absolutely excellent. Visited April 2018
