"Beautiful boutique hotel"
The rooms were beautiful the staff was amazing. The breakfast and dinner was great. They give you bread to feed the black swans. The view across the lake was beautiful . Sunsets were beautiful But the smell of the nearby sulfur springs.... ugh.
We stayed at the black swan for two nights early July as part of a two week holiday in New Zealand. We really liked the hotel and it's amenities a lot. Nicola who was the manager during our stay was immensely pleasant and simply couldn't do enough for us with lots of recommendations for things to do and see in the area. She took care of any bookings and was absolutely brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble, her focus being that we took in, enjoyed and experienced as much as possible while in Rotorua. We took advantage of the great jacuzzis in the very well kept garden and the breakfast was wholesome and had good choices. Our room was very comfortable and had everything you need. Locally there's much to do in the area. The town is a short drive away with lots of bars and restaurants. We also attended a very nice Maori evening which was enjoyable and the traditional Maori food excellent. We also drove to Waimangu and walked around the fantastic geological sites, even though the weather was poor with heavy rain it was still enjoyable, highly recommend. There's lots more to do in the area. Nicola can help there... We can't fault the hotel, it's very well presented and kept. Big thanks to Nicola for looking after us and being so attentive, friendly and pleasant.
"Beautiful hotel and location"
Had a fantastic stay at the Black Swan last weekend. Beautiful rooms, amazing food and lovely friendly staff. We enjoyed a murder mystery dinner with friends in the restaurant which was so much fun. A lovely location for a weekend away. Will definitely be returning.
"Some things great, but not good "value""
Things we liked: View over lake from gardens Spa/jacuzzi in outdoor area Sauna Friendly staff Free Water/snacks/cakes Breakfast included - Eggs Benedict were pleasant. Views from Dining room. Things we didnt like: Paying 2-3x the cost of any other room we stayed in during this trip to NZ but not feeling we received good "value". Garden/pool view Room was nice enough but at $AUD500+ it was dissapointing for the following reasons; Noise - paper thin walls/wood construction and being below the kitchen means that when staff/other guests start moving around/talking at 5am... it sounds like they are in same room as you! Adminitration/Management : whilst all the staff we encountered were pleasant/polite we didnt feel the standard of engagment reflected the premium price. E.g.: A cursory but inadequate orientation of the room and/or facilities - e.g. we only stumbled upon the (very good) outdoor spa/Jacuzzis by accident and worked out how to use by trial/error - similarly no mention of the Sauna or offer to prepare it for use as it was turned off. Outdoor Pool looked dark/green ... no idea if it was meant to be that colour and/or if it was heated or not.. ? No empowerment of staff; when I explained that (based on the web images/description) the room was not what I had been expecting for the price and, that it was meant to be a surprise treat for our wedding anniversary ... even though another room was available... I was told an "upgrade" would cost another $AUD200+. Not seeing the value I declined. Shortly afterwards I received a call to say that there had been a mix up in the rooms and we cojld have a complimentary meal in their dining room ... or a bottle of wine... whilst this was a nice gesture it didnt really make up for the dissapointment or equate to a "complementary" upgrade. Summary: Overall it was a dichotomy of experiences but on balance even thoigh the grounds are beautiful, it is not one I'd recommend as "value for money" unless you have bottomless pockets, are a heavy sleeper and can eat your own weight in cooked breakfast.
What can I say. From the time off arrival to departure nothing was too much trouble. Luxurious room and en suite, comfortable bed that led to a sound sleep, meals that still make my mouth water and views to die for. What's not too like.
