"Beautiful Views, lovely rooms, mixed feelings"
This is a wonderful hotel on the lake outside of Rotorua and the rooms were very pretty. My problem with the rooms that we had was that they were right off the courtyard leading to the parking lot so even though the porch with fireplace might have been pleasant to sit out on to enjoy the views, it would not have felt very private. That said, it was quite chilly when we were there so it wasn't missed too much. Breakfast served in their dining room overlooking the lake was wonderful. The personal service and information provided by the manager who served us was just great. I have read some negative reviews and I really feel that the people who did not appreciate the staff just don't understand the feeling of a bed and breakfast which this definitely is. It is a bit far afield from town so we had a taxi take us to dinner so as not to get lost on the way back, but it is still very convenient to everything.
We were extremely pleased with the eloquent finishings, accommodations and overall attention to detail. The dining experience, for both breakfast and dinner was exceptional. The staff and service is second to none. We highly recommend The Black Swan as a romantic, intimate getaway.
"Don't judge a book by its cover"
We all know this saying, but rarely experience the true meaning. We had a long journey, and felt delighted to arrive at this lakeside hotel. Then we saw all the dead trout flies, on the pillows, copious dead flies in the door ways, on the dressing table underneath the music centre, one it goes on. The disgusting yellow stained pillows. Ok time to call the manager!!! His response was, well your near the lake, what do you expect? Oh , say I, a few, live, trout flies certainly but not copious amounts of dead ones, Mr Proprietor manager replies, well this is the cleanest room we have, then suggested that I had no right to remove his pillow cases to check for hygiene, my que to remove the rest of them in front of him, Proprietor manager States that this is quite normal for a hotel. Errrr I don't think so. He walked off stating to us, Qoute, you have to 6.30 pm when the housekeeper comes in to let me know what you want to do!! We emailed our travel agent with photos attached, the room was cleaned to a better standard, although the bathroom facilities remained filthy. Please have a look at the photos attached, we were offered a box of chocolates the next day with a card of sincere apologies, but the chocolates were 3 months out of date, so we gave them back, an hour later, the chocolates had been removed from the box and placed on a small dish on the reception counter for unfortunate unsuspecting guests. Our advice, give this place a very wide birth, don't bother
"Magnificent view of lake and swans"
The staff were exceptionally knowledgeable, thoughtful and entertaining. When my wife fell and hurt her knee the proprietor was able to suggest a wonderful and less stressful alternative to one of our originally scheduled outings. The on-site helipad allows very special jaunts to famous sites direct from the B&B..
We were really looking forward to our stay but it was extremely disappointing and not worth the money. We arrived early as our journey was much quicker than expected. We met Arthur the owner/manager and were able to check in, but our room was not ready which was fine but we asked if we could get some coffee but told "no" !! The restaurant was not open that evening, Friday, and we were told that they also own Bistro 1284 in town with free shuttle which seemed OK thinking that we would go to Hotel restaurant on Saturday evening but again it was closed. To be honest not sure it is ever open for dinner because they do not have a chef. The hotel itself is in an amazing location our room overlooking the pool was comfortable but unfortunately was beneath the kitchen so very noisy with breakfast service starting at 7:00 am. On our last morning breakfast took forever nearly 40 minutes to order because Arthur it appears has to do everything
