"Fabulous property if you book the right room "
My wife and I stayed 2 nights here in early October 2017. The first impression is WOW when you drive down the long driveway and examine the environment of this property. You are right next to the lake, with a small dock where you can sit and feed the ducks or black swans. There is a well manicured sitting area, a small swimming pool, and 2 outdoor heated spas. This facility has expanded over the years. The main 2 story building is the most recent. It includes 5 guest rooms, the restaurant, a small reception area, and a large glassed in porch where you can enjoy the view. The older single story building contains 3 rooms, each with an outdoor gas fireplace and a long lit water feature that runs at ground level between the rooms and sidewalk. We fired up the gas logs and had a very enjoyable sit one night. We dealt mainly with “Mala†and we can’t say enough good about how he looks after you. We checked in around 2pm and we hadn’t eaten lunch yet. Even though his kitchen was closed, he arranged for us to get a sandwich made up. He was always thinking of how to help you settle in and relax. Our travel agent recommended this place, and we understood why especially after we saw how the rest of the hotels were crowded in on the main drag. The only note of caution is that the older rooms (#1-3) have thin walls, so if you’re quiet you can probably hear your immediate neighbor’s TV. I understand the rooms (#4-8) in the main building are better insulated. Some of the decor is not to my taste, but the bed and sheets were comfortable and of high quality. We had both dinner and breakfast and both meals were excellent!
"Thank you Arthur"
I must start this review by thanking our 5 star host Arthur. His presence, demeanor and attention is a lesson for hotel chains, even the 5 star ones. Black Swan is muted, staid, quiet elegance on the lake. Certainly, you can find less expensive lodgings on the Las Vegas like, neon flooded, packed together like sardines on Fenton Street, but why would you do that, when there is the Black Swan, on the lake. Black Swan is not near the lake, it does not look at the lake, it is on the lake - unlike other lodgings that may be in some "proximity". Tucked away in an alcove, minutes away from the CBD of Rotorua, Black Swan is quiet, calm, elegant and your staging area for Rotorua and its surroundings. Accommodations - 5 star - large well appointed room, comfortable bed, fireplace, mini bar, floor to ceiling windows/ sliding glass doors, with outdid veranda seating, which provide the breathtaking view of the lake. Bed is very comfortable. Fireplace warmed the entire room in quickly on chilly nights. Coffee machine and separate kettle in room - with real coffee (not instant). Bathroom / toilet - large comfortable, warm, large tub with separate glass enclosed shower, plentiful, high pressure shower with hot /hot/hot water. Plush robes provided. The room is QUIET! Hotel- 5star - comfortable seating through out, with fireplaces everywhere. Views to the lake are enhanced. The grounds are perfectly manicured, blending in with the natural surrounding, without a fabricated look. There is a pool and 2 hot tubs. Privacy is everywhere. I did get the opportunity to meet the hotels namesake on the lakes shore. Food- 5 star - you can have all 3 of the days meals here and you will not regret it. All ingredients are fresh, (yogurt made on site), fresh, delicious. The upstairs restaurant / dining has a whiskey bar with various spirits. We could not finish our bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, so Arthur placed it in our mini bar for us the following day. The food is excellent. The chefs (yes, plural) are there (as is Arthur) to see to your every culinary need. Ample amounts of fresh pressed hot flavorful coffee. Did I mention that you will be eating your meals, while enjoying a full unobstructed view of the lake, warmed by a fireplace? The food selection is varied, impeccably prepared / presented and the flavor, well, I'm getting hungry just by the memory. Arthur- 5 star - a most gracious host. He provided us with helpful information about the area and surrounding attractions. Upon our immediate arrival, having established us in our rooms, he was on the phone arranging a helicopter tour of the volcanic White Island. He directed us to other attractions with excellent directions and recommendations. Arthur will see to your every need. Arthur's love, enthusiasm and pride of all things New Zealand is shared and appreciated. His help made our stay a once in a lifetime. We were made to feel like a local rather than a tourist. As if directing friends to enjoy the locale, instead of feeding tourists to attractions. When Arthur recommends you go visit a specific place, go there! There are not enough words to thank you Arthur, for your attentions to us. The Black Swan is a healthy walk from Rotorua, having a car makes it easier to find as well as getting to and from, but that is not an inconvenience, it is a delight as it reduces foot traffic and noise. You would be greatly mistaken to stay in Rotorua and not stay in the Black Swan.
"Beautiful boutique hotel"
The rooms were beautiful the staff was amazing. The breakfast and dinner was great. They give you bread to feed the black swans. The view across the lake was beautiful . Sunsets were beautiful But the smell of the nearby sulfur springs.... ugh.
We stayed at the black swan for two nights early July as part of a two week holiday in New Zealand. We really liked the hotel and it's amenities a lot. Nicola who was the manager during our stay was immensely pleasant and simply couldn't do enough for us with lots of recommendations for things to do and see in the area. She took care of any bookings and was absolutely brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble, her focus being that we took in, enjoyed and experienced as much as possible while in Rotorua. We took advantage of the great jacuzzis in the very well kept garden and the breakfast was wholesome and had good choices. Our room was very comfortable and had everything you need. Locally there's much to do in the area. The town is a short drive away with lots of bars and restaurants. We also attended a very nice Maori evening which was enjoyable and the traditional Maori food excellent. We also drove to Waimangu and walked around the fantastic geological sites, even though the weather was poor with heavy rain it was still enjoyable, highly recommend. There's lots more to do in the area. Nicola can help there... We can't fault the hotel, it's very well presented and kept. Big thanks to Nicola for looking after us and being so attentive, friendly and pleasant.
"Beautiful hotel and location"
Had a fantastic stay at the Black Swan last weekend. Beautiful rooms, amazing food and lovely friendly staff. We enjoyed a murder mystery dinner with friends in the restaurant which was so much fun. A lovely location for a weekend away. Will definitely be returning.
