"Upgraded when we arrived in February"

The queen+single (which they gave the 3 of us for $87 per night, the price of the less luxurious room that we reserved) was spacious and light-filled, with comfortable beds and lots of hot water (a bit hard to turn off). The dining room was staffed by really nice young people (but the best items ran out at the continental breakfast and the dinner food was more interesting at the other hotel in the village).

"good for backpackers"

If you are a young trekking enthusiast this may be your place. We are beyond the age and were quite unhappy with the facilities. Shared bathrooms are a problem. The rooms have minimal equipment. The restaurant was a pleasant surprise, so was the well assorted bar. Internet connectivity comes at 5 NZD and did not work well.

"Having dinner in the mountains"

After our rainy walk in the Whakapapa area we decided to finish with a dinner in the Skotel Alpine Resort. The food we ordered was obviously ready before the order. We received the meal within minutes after we ordered it. So far for a nice and relaxed dinner. For desert we decided to take some time before ordering so at least giving us time to finish our glas of wine. However after the order for the cheese platter they seemed to forget all about us. It took a long time. At last we had eye contact with the waitress and she must have realized something was wrong. I have to say that the desert cheese plateau looked very nice and we enjoyed it very much.

"Incredible Views"

The rooms themselves are basic and probably require some TLC. However, the rooms themselves were clean, the staff were good, meals were great, and the view is spectacular. The hotel served as a base for us to do the Tongariro Crossing or other hikes in the area as we stayed there for our Topdeck tour.

"Base for the Tongariro Crossing"

this hotel is in whakapapa village which is a good base for the Tongariro Crossing and mount Ruapehu. the staff are friendly and helpful and it was very easy to arrange a shuttle service for the crossing trek. The rooms are in need of some TLC (dirty curtains) and the layout of the room is somewhat strange - shower and toilet cubicle but wash-hand basin in the room. fridge in the room and there is a guest kitchen which is adequately stocked. We cooked for ourselves for the first two nights which was a good idea because the bar meal on the third night was unbelievably bad. Fish cakes -not a difficult meal to cook -any Jamie oliver book will tell you how to do it. What i got tasted like a third rate burger with no discernible fish in it. Vegetable stack with halloumi cheese had some rather overcooked veg with one small piece of halloumi. they obviously cater for the passing through one night trade. Wifi - got 100MB free on arrival and after that had to pay. Some pathetic excuse about being up a hill. We have a home in Italy in a mountainous area and wifi is no problem - direct line of sight to a mast. If we are in remote area I have no problem with poor or no wifi - but next to a tarmac road there is no excuse.- you can book the hotel on line - there is obviously internet here.
