We arrived after a long day of travel from the US and a long immigration process at Auckland Airport. The delay was coming through declaring our hiking equipment. We had been warned and everything we brought with us had been sterilized before leaving the US...so I was prepared...The agent was very intent on asking every question we had already responded to and she asked the question over and over...food? No, Sandwiches? No, Fruit? No, Well I understand, they are very careful...so... We get to the ferry and take a lovely trip to the island and are picked up by Boatshed staff and the trip starts in earnest. Clara met us and sat down and talked with us, what do we like, what plans do we have, do we need any help with reservations. She really wanted to be sure we had a great visit to the island and the Boatshed. We had tea and coffee, made a dinner reservation for dinner that night at the Boatshed, and then were shown to our lovely room. The room was so nice, with a comfy beach feel. The patio shutters were open and we had a great view of the beach. I took a nice walk into the village and along the beach. Dinner was a fix prix meal. Having alerted Clara that I am a vegetarian I was treated to a marvelous meal. Everything was specifically prepared for me and was wonderful. Well Worth the money. Everything was perfect. The included breakfasts were great. A beautiful Buffett of fresh fruit, yogurt, breads, home made croissants, cereals, then a choice of a savory or sweat main course, eggs, omelets or crepes. Everything was wonderful I encourage at least two nights here, just to get relaxed and ready for the rest of your New Zealand trip. We were advised that a stay here was a great way to relax after traveled as well as getting into the New Zealand life style. We took a lovely wine tour during one of our days on Waiheke, and tasted great wines, even ordered a case for home!!
"Perfection at Christmas "
We arrived on Christmas Eve and we could not have expected more from the warmth of the welcome and the efficiency of the pick up/check in. Within minutes we were enjoying drinks and a cheese plate overlooking the ocean and we quite forgot our long flight from Heathrow to Auckland! After that it just kept on getting better: rooms spacious, thoughtfully equipped and tastefully decorated. Food: very good. Chef happy to chat informally about ingredients and recipes. Every meal well judged. We opted for the Christmas Day package and basically ate and drank all day, in between swimming in the sea and strolling along the beach. A light lunchtime platter of meats and local cheeses, served on the terrace and washed down with a bottle of fizz, did not detract from the excellent Christmas dinner served in the evening as the sun went down. Customer service: second to none. Our every whim seemed to be anticipated and catered for. Our only regret is not staying for longer.
"Amazing -- don't stay less than 2 days"
The Boatshed was the highlight of our trip to New Zealand. It is so cute and comfortable. Travel and design books fill the interior. There are lots of places to sit and relax and the view over the harbor is spectacular. From the minute we got there the staff was attentive and helpful -- they would do anything to make our stay better. We were greeted with wine and cheese. When we asked for a lunch at an off time, they prepared the most delicious spread for us that we could ever imagine. The dinner was incredible. The rooms are also wonderful. They are suites with living rooms and bedrooms. We only got to stay for 1 night which was a huge mistake. Definitely stay here.
"Exceptional from start to finish. "
Our only regret in staying at The Boatshed is that we didn't book a longer stay. From the minute we were picked up at the ferry to the minute we were dropped back off everything about our stay was amazing. The resort itself is beautiful. Our bungalow was perfect. The common area is a place you just want to be. So beautiful and relaxing. Now to the team! Absolutely the best!!! We've honestly never had service as exceptional. From the moment you walk in the door you are coddled by the staff. Never overbearing, always there when you need anything. It's like being with people you've known forever and are old friends. Then there is the dining! The open kitchen makes is seem like you are at home. Breakfast every morning is perfect. Dinner each evening is amazing. Five courses, no menu. The chef created amazing meals based on what was fresh that day. And each evening tables are set in the common area so that you have a private candlelight dinner, while still enjoying the company of other guests. To make the service even more amazing is that when we left our room for breakfast, our room was immediately cleaned. In the evening, as soon as we left our room for dinner the room was turned down for evening.....including candlelight and wonderful music in the Bose player. Another great touch is the Jeeps that are available for a reasonable fee that you can take out for the day to explore the island, and the great wineries. Perfect!!! Finally, the price. It's obviously a more expensive hotel than others.....but a bargain based on the experience. As well, the additional cost for the dinner, drinks, and exceptional wine list are all very reasonable. Unlike most hotels, we thought the food and drink fees were a bargain. There is no gouging as far as we thought. A huge shout out to Jonathan and his team...Natalie, Shawn, Lucia, Clara, Chef Francesco, and all the others behind the scenes!! And of course, Harry the dog. The best!! We can't wait for our next trip to The Boatshed!
"Fish Sauce "
We are staying in the beautiful Owners Cottage at The Boatshed on a stormy weekend. As is my inclination I cooked dinner in the excellent kitchen in the Cottage. I was making a Thai chicken curry complete with eggplant, lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves. Suddenly I realised I had forgotten that most critical ingredient - fish sauce. Now driving to the shops was no longer an option so I raced into the kitchen at The Boatshed and asked the Chef if he had any fish sauce. No, sorry, was the reply. Never mind, I said. Anyway 15 minutes later the owner knocked on our door with - you guessed it - a bottle of fish sauce (elevating my curry from a 4 to a 5 star dish - no false modesty here. This anecdote summarises The Boatshed. Casual, friendly and nothing - nothing - is too much trouble. Yes it is pricey and we are fortunate to be able to stay in places like this but the casual friendly - yet luxurious - approach beats (for example) Huka Lodge and Wolgan Valley. Perfect.
