"Very Central and Very Comfortable!"
We had a great view from the 7th floor! Bed was very comfortable, room tastefully decorated and we ate at the in-house restaurant every night! Staff were more than accommodating. A very short walk to the shops and it was easy to get around by foot.
"Not comfortable. "
Work put me up here for three nights. Never again! Small, cramped and stuffy rooms. Small bathroom and both in the Ibis template. I had to secure the bed in place with the ironing board (which was torn and therefore hopeless) as minor movements had it rolling on its wheels. The ac was dodgy making the room really stuffy. The room service options are minimal and it is pricier than it should be. This will be my last stay.
This is a comfortable IBIS in the centre of (the now being rebuilt) Christchurch. My room had two double beds, and a smallish shower room with an easy to use shower. The hairdryer was reasonable. There was an iron, ironing board and fridge – but no safe. The buffet dinner and breakfast were very good. There was a happy hour in the bar which finished at 7pm. There is a laundry in the basement which was very useful at this stage in my travels. Staff were very helpful and I got a late checkout.
Great position for walking round Christchurch. My husband and I flew in, caught the purple bus to the city and walked a couple of blocks - so easy - and cheap. I am a Platinum Accor club member and we had a great room, and a lovely note of welcome in the room. I asked for a late checkout and got a 12.30 checkout but the girl at reception sounded like she was doing me a great favour and wasn't particularly friendly. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend the hotel.
"Decent rooms - but price performance was lacking"
Like other reviews you may have read, the prices that the Ibis charges for you to stay at the hotel is not cheap, around the mid level $250-$270 per night. I feel most people wouldn't complain if the hotel lived up to it's promise and expectations of the guests but I can understand why the ratings are as they are. I stayed here on business for 3 nights and although it was an overall alright stay experience, there is plenty of room for improvement. For your info I stayed on room 519 looking out to Hereford street and into the offices of the BNZ building. Room 2/5 What I like was the work table, very nice wide, clean and bright in front of the window. Would be nice if there was a desk lamp as the rooms where not very bright. The bed was reasonably comfy and the bathroom was acceptable. Issue#1 - I asked for the hotel to change my room chair (it comes standard with a cheap & nasty plastic chair-that-will-give-you-a-sore-back-if-you-sit-too-long-on-it) and within 15mins I had an ergonomic chair delivered to my room. I was happy with the service but I the cleanliness of the newly delivered chair left something else to desire (imagine a black office chair stained with a lot of liquid and dust etc). Rather than complain, I just chucked a clean bath towel over it and it did the job for the rest of my stay. ** To improve: all rooms should come standard with an office chair, particularly when you have guests staying on business and people like me often have to do some work at night, so a comfortable chair is required for that. Also if you are loaning chairs out to guests - please just make sure it's REALLY clean and presentable. Issue #2: As I mentioned I was travelling on business, so the first thing I always need to do when I get to the hotel is iron my shirts from my luggage case since it gets all wrinkled from being packed inside. I found the ironing board in my room was just unbelievably pitiful.... more specifically, the ironing cover sheet was WAY too big for the ironing board size and the sponge underneath was not cut to size .... so when you have this, it makes your job of ironing that much more difficult as everything underneath your shirts were moving around a lot. I did what i could and managed to get my shirts ironed but it took much longer than needed. *** To improve: have your housekeeping/engineering guys fix this issue permanently as this is not what customers expect after paying a lot of money to stay there. Even motels that charge half the price would have far better in-room facilities than this. Issue#3 - Shower water pressure and temperature regulator were below-expected standards. The water pressure from the shower was pitifully soft, and the last thing you want after a shower is to feel like you didn't wash yourself properly and feel even more stressed. The hot water regulator was not consistent as when you feel the water isn't hot enough you turn it up slightly to get to the temp you want, but in a min or two, the water becomes extremely hot and you end up scalding your private parts because it always happen when you are in the middle of something like washing your face/shaving.... *** to improve - your engineers/plumbers will need to fix this issue to make sure that consistent hot water flows equally to all units. Food 2/5 - I added in $25 per day to my nightly stay for the continental breakfast because I didn't have much time to go out for breakfast, so this was the easiest option for me. Although there was always food available, the taste was somewhat bland, variety kept to a minimum, fruits were noticeably straight out from a can and not appetizing, juice was never topped up and the Oopen restaurant didn't feel it had an inviting atmosphere. Was it worth it? Perhaps because it was convenient for me to quickly drop by to get something quick to eat but it wasn't always a pleasant feeling. Note that there aren't too many places around the hotel that are open for breakfast due to the city construction going on- there's a Robert Harris cafe and a Pita Pit just on Hereford street open for breakfast, so you can either do that or go for the hotel's breakfast or go somewhere else other than the city. Staff 5/5 - You can't fault the staff, they work hard, they are friendly and they will try to make your stay comfortable. I never had an issue with customer service while I was here. Other things to note if you are considering to stay at the Ibis # There's no gym but since Ibis and Novotel are the same Accor group - you can walk 5mins down the road from the Ibis to Novotel and use their gym for free on the 3rd floor. Just show them your room card at the Novotel and they'll let you in. # There's a coin laundry room in the basement of the Ibis. $4 a pop for one cycle which lasts about 40-45mins - it also has a mechanical laundry detergent dispenser attached to each laundry machine as well so the $4 is inclusive of laundry liquid. # $25 per day for using the basement car park - quite pricey but it is convenient and covered. Considering the other public car parks around aren't very user friendly for overnight parking (meaning that some nearby charge a night fee of $7 or $8 for 12 hours from the hours of 6pm to 6am - but I don't normally leave the hotel until around close to 8am and I usually get back around 5pm each day...), this was just a little less hassle.
