"Very remote and not for tourists seeing as much of NZ as possible"
Recommended to us by our travel agent. Lovely waterside location. Very isolated and quiet. Nice bedroom. Nice lounge areas. Nice grounds. There is the free use of canoes, kayaks and bicycles. That’s about it! We went for three nights. Getting there from Picton involved a boat, taxi and boat transfer. I cannot imagine that operation in wet weather. Totally remote, Raetihi is lovely if you only want to lounge about (so long as the weather is sunny) and/or you love canoeing, kayaking or fishing. We don’t! Cycling is also possible on the road along the shore but could not be much fun as the road is unsealed (rough gravel) and quite steep in places. Walking on the road a driver sped past leaving flying stones and dust clouds, a very dangerous encounter. We could have had very expensive outings in a launch. Luckily, we had great sunny hot weather. We did not want to lounge about, or go on the water. We wanted to explore the area but there was one road going along the shore left and right and one footpath up a steep hill for good views. We felt marooned. No shops, cafés, etc. No competition for the lodge. If the weather turned bad we would be stuck indoors: in our bedroom or the lounge with everyone else. Some like that kind of socialising. At the lodge entrance was a board publicising ‘luxury accommodation’. In our accommodation, the bedroom had a nice view of the front gardens and the sea beyond. It was a good size and had good lighting for reading yet it had only one chair (for two people sharing!). The advertised alarm clock was missing. The bedrooms do not have TVs/video players, etc, as walls are very thin and you can hear everything beyond them! Is that luxury? The room is serviced only if you leave the required sign outside it. The bathroom was clean. It had a fixed overhead shower but shower caps weren’t provided with the toiletries. The basin did not have mixer taps; the two taps were so small one could hardly get one’s hands under the running water. Is that luxurious? Other bathrooms in 4* hotels/lodges we encountered on our 5-week trip around New Zealand had mixer taps, flexible/adjustable shower heads, some with a bath, and some had underfloor heating. Raetihi didn’t. The lounge had the only TV. If people used the lounge who would decide to use the TV and the channels to watch, and what if other guests sat and wanted to relax in quiet there? And children? Thankfully, there weren’t any kids as it was not holiday time. There is a games room adjacent to it. Avoid bedrooms 1, 2 and 3 as they would suffer noise from these 2 areas. Breakfast is a-la-carte. The fruit juice came in a large tumbler half filled with ice like for a mid-morning drink in the sun. The next 2 days I asked for ½ the amount without the ice. The muesli (no other choice of cereal) came half filling a large bowl. The following days I requested ½ the amount but was served the full amount and was told ‘That’s how it comes!’. The cooked breakfast comes while you’re still eating the muesli; send it back and it comes dried out when you want it or leave it on the table to get cold. Dinner is also a-la-carte. Nice menu but it did not change in the 3 nights we were there. The last night we did not know what to choose and ended up choosing the baked salmon. It was warm on the outside but cold and uncooked on the inside. We had it sent back. No apology forth came! We found the dining room cold especially at breakfast as most doors were left open unless we closed them. No heating evident. One lunch time we chose to eat outside. The table was dirty. The waitress saw us wipe some dirt but she didn’t follow on by wiping the rest of the dirt. Music! Music plays all the time in the dining room and the front patio area. It was a bit much having it outside as well. In the dining room it was too loud especially at breakfast. Raetihi gets amazing reviews. We cannot understand why. We regretted using 3 precious days there, but at least the weather was brilliant with nice views and bird life. Finally, our travel agent noted in our booking that we were celebrating a wedding anniversary. It was our 40th! On our arrival the manageress announced with delight to the many guests in reception that we were newlyweds. Well! All very pretentious. Not recommended for tourists on a tight schedule to see as much of NZ as possible.
"Fabulous location, noisy rooms but fabulous owners, staff ok"
The setting is incredible. We were unlucky with bad weather but would never hold the venue to account for that. Welcome/reception staff, and owners, were great. Remaining staff very average and unwilling to inquire about changes to the menu due to dietary restrictions/limitations. If you are in room 1, ask to move as it is very noisy and note the walls are VERY thin. Facilities are lovely, but you are charged for EVERYTHING, and 10% service charge applies on Sunday's/public holidays. Even a coffee is $5! Shocked breakfast wasn't included for the price, and there is nowhere nearby to go for dinner so you are at the mercy of the menu. Definitely stock up en route if you want to keep costs down. Wines were reasonably priced and worth it. Food portions are small for their respective cost.
"Dinner review only hete"
We walked here from Hopewell lodge for dinner. Must say that was hands down one of the best dinners we had on South Island! Fresh ingredients, superb fish, lovely presentation. The goats cheese starter with crackers is excellent too. Friendly service with a smile. And you don't have to stay there to eat there.
"Peace and tranquility with the stunning backdrop of the Marlborough Sounds"
Raetihi Lodge is a wonderful place to stay. The rooms are well equipped and we had room 6 with magnificent views of the water and mountains. The Marlborough Sounds are simply gorgeous- everywhere you look there is an amazing photo opportunity. The food in the Lodge was delicious and plentiful. The staff were friendly and accommodating especially Alan and Liane; the owners. Nothing was too much trouble. Lots to do if you like activity; jet boat trips, long walks, kayaking, row boating, mountain bike riding or you can relax on a lounger in the sun with a good book like I did.
"The best lodge in Marlborough Sounds!"
We had a magical 3 days at Raethi. Alan and Liane were amazing hosts, and the lodge was a fantastic place to relax. The lodge is in a beautiful setting and everything is superb - the food, the service, and the place itself. Would recommend a stay here to anyone.
