"Special birthday and anniversary trip"

A slice of heaven. Our travel agent booked this for us so we weren't sure exactly what to expect (we've come to expect a lot). And what we got here was just incredible. Not sure how many guests were there during our stay, but the service and attentiveness of everyone at the lodge made it feel like everything they did was exclusively for us. The lodge is intimate with massive detailing in scale (2nd largest fireplace in NZ) - mirroring the experience of the fiords and mountains which made it so comforting, welcoming and awe-inspiring. The food was delicious - local (mostly) ingredients - and the chef's attention to detail in bringing wonderful flavors together was amazing. The service is just exceptional. (Andy, the manager, and his team are just an extraordinary bunch. We came without a car so they drove us in to town as needed and helped us manage through some last-minute changes to our already planned itinerary -- thanks, Jenny, you rock! And thanks, everyone for making our stay so memorable.) We chose to stay in a private 2-story cabin (with gas fireplace, expansive views and just a little extra privacy) but enjoyed the huge wood-burning fireplace in the lodge every night during and after dessert. Whichever you choose, you won't be disappointed.

"Unexpected problems..."

Reading the numerous " excellent " reviews might lead to overly high expectations here. We were offered a very high standard of service on our arrival, including valet parking and porter service for our heavy luggage. The complementary cold drinks were very welcome, but I was surprised by various glaring deficiencies in the structure and fittings of our magnificent looking room. The bedroom was hot ,on a not particularly warm afternoon, and had NO opening windows! Indeed, apart from the french doors(onto an undivided communal balcony, the total ventilation for a very large suite was two opening windows of about 1 m x 15 cm,in the huge lounge. The discomfort was further aggravated by the heated mirror linked to the bathroom lights. The bedroom was not fitted with curtains ,merely venetian blinds not providing a good blackout. Two large windows in the gable end were completely unscreened.Fortunately, the bedroom in our case did not adjoin another room,as sound insulation was unexpectedly poor- normal conversation by our neighbours was easily heard in the lounge. The fine looking room was impossible to keep decently tidy owing to a gross lack of storage space. Breakfast was generally well up to the standard expected, with good choice of cooked breakfast ,akthough a little short on quantity. Dinner had a choice of only two main courses,of a very elaborate nature. On one night the meat was very rare, and almost cold ,served on a cold plate. The other night was much better, but again rapid consumption was needed owing to the poor temperature. For a locality where many guests will have a physically active day,the meal was very short of calories! The " sourdough" bread offered, though a source of energy,is particularly lacking in taste and texture. Like the bedroom, the public spaces look fine, but lack ventilation and sun protection- the hotel faces the sunset. I must emphasise the very high standard of service here, both from the staff and management, but I feel the architect and builder have not lived up to the image created by the publicity material and reviews.

"Stunning lodge"

This place was absolutely amazing, the building in its own right was stunningly beautiful, the views from the building of the lake and the mountainous surroundings was amazing. The room was lovely, but the facilities were lacking very slightly, (very poor internet connections, actually non, very poor TV reception) could have done with a few special touches but no complaints. Who needs Internet or TV when the views are so magnificent. The sleep was superb. The evening meal, well, one does wonder why a cook! Has to mess around with perfectly good local produce, to make a work of art on a plate look like something from a futuristic space menu??? It doesn't make you into a chef!!!! It makes the end product cold and unpalatable. Don't do it, it spoils your hotel lodge experience. Oh and purchase some proper decent bread. On saying this, I would recommend totally this beautiful place to rest your head.

Stayed there for two nights with my family to celebrate a significant birthday. Fantastic. Great rooms with very knowledgeable staff which simply complimented the great service. The food was spectacular with a great birthday cake thrown in as well!

Just wonderful. Lovely staff. Excellent dinners & breakfasts. Beautiful views over the lake & mountains. We had a very well-appointed log cabin which was very comfortable & private. The location is great for walks from the famous Milford Road.
