"Holiday of a lifetime!"
Where do we begin! We booked this holiday through Emirates Holidays. Our initial flight was cancelled from Glasgow due to the snow. We had to leave 3 days later but Kandima honoured our 10 nights from that date. From start to finish this place was amazing. We went half board and stayed for 10 nights in an Ocean Pool Villa (room 305) (well worth the extra). It was like having your own personal Aquarium. We saw pods of Dolphins, Stingrays, Octopus and many tropical fish from our decking. The staff at this resort cannot do enough for you. A particular mention to our housekeeper Saai (who I add, based on a previous review, would not enter your room if the "do not disturb" light was on)! Our room was kept spotless and he even did some amazing towel art to make us feel special - thank you Saai! The bar staff make amazing cocktails and are always smiling - to Susantha, (also the lad from Jamaica - sorry don't know your name!), and the other lovely barman (also, so sorry don't know your name but you know who you are!) As we were half board we mainly ate in Flavour Restaurant. Again, the staff were all so attentive. On our first night the chefs showed us all the different food sections with a personal tour! There is enough variety for everyone's taste. We have never tasted Naan Bread and Curries like it - absolutely beautiful! Freshly caught Tuna, Chinese food, soups, and so many other dishes. Superb selection for breakfast also. Amazing poached egg with Hollondaise Sauce (made by the lovely Moroccan lad), omelettes, porridge and too many other dishes to mention - fantastic! A special mention to the lovely Abu and the team of waiters constantly filling your water glass and to the girl who took us to our table every night (who even remembered your room number). We had one meal in "Smoked" which was extra as we were half board but was worth every penny! My husband said it was the best steak he had ever had! The food in this restaurant is superb as is the service. The Delli is very well stocked - biscuits, crisps, sweets, nuts, drinks, smoothies, cakes, sandwiches, sushi and a very nice wine selection! Again, attentive staff. Definitely try a massage at the Spa - worth every penny. It was so relaxing listening to the ocean outside the treatment room. We went to an Art Class and met the lovely Aima who was very patient with two beginners! We are going to have our Art work framed to remind us of our stay at Kandima and the many staff members who became friends. It was so emotional to say goodbye to so many lovely people. The entertainment was fantastic - a local band called the Kabans could play any request. Also great DJ's. This is a family resort (which we prefer). It is relaxing and kept spotlessly clean. We also hired bicycles (highly recommend this) to get round the island. There are a couple of shops stocking souvenirs, clothes and necessities you may require. Also, it is reassuring to know there is a Medical Centre available (thankfully not that we needed it!) It is worth taking some snorkelling shoes in your suitcase (we purchased them online before we went for about £15) as entering the water is obviously fairly sharp over a coral reef! It is worth investing in these shoes because the water is so inviting. Regarding the Transfers that many people comment on. These are not organised by the hotel but by the transfer company. We chose to travel on the domestic flight and boat transfer which was fine. When you arrive at Male you are met by a Kandima Representative who take you by the hand and deal with check-in for you. They then take you to the departure area. After around a 35 minute flight you are met, again by a Kandima rep, at a spotless airport and transferred by a bus to the speedboat (which takes around 25 minutes). You are then met by Kandima Resort staff with a welcoming drink and towel and checked into your room. You are given a wristband each which incorporates a chip to enter your room. On our return journey we were again checked in by the Kandima rep and advised that our flight would have to land at another island before travelling on to Male. This obviously added to the time with the first flight being 35 minutes and then staying on the aeroplane for a further 55 minutes. However, it was lovely seeing another Island. Again, when we arrived at Male we were met by a Rep. and taken to our departure Gate for the Emirates flight to Dubai - absolutely no problems at all. Thank you to all at Kandima who made our first visit to the Maldives so special - we will definitely return.
"Far too many issues to justify the price – read this before you buy"
As many other reviewers have said, Kandima is incredibly beautiful. The beaches are picture perfect, accommodation, restaurants and facilities are all in great condition. The staff are friendly and helpful. The food, especially in the al a carte restaurants, is delicious. But we had a number of issues. Having re-read reviews, many of these are things that others have commented on before, which means they are recurring issues that go back months and are not being addressed. I share our experience here so you can be fully informed before you book. 1) We paid for the premium all inclusive package. This is supposed to entitle you to eat for no extra cost in any of their nine restaurants (apart from some items like lobster that incur extra charge). Sounds great? Not quite. What they don’t tell you when you book is that they don’t actually open all their restaurants every day. Some meal times we found that none of the al a carte restaurants were open so we ate at the buffet – which means the extra premium we paid for that meal was effectively money down the drain. Kandima do give you a schedule when you arrive with opening hours (which we didn’t at first pay much attention to as we assumed that the hours for the first day would be the same every day), but my issue is that they don’t tell you before you pay the premium that you don’t really have the choice they promise. Plus, who wants (or expects) to have to study a schedule of opening hours when they’re on holiday? 2) Linked to above, we were twice told that a la carte restaurants would be closed during our one-week stay to host a bbq instead. Incredibly, even though we’d already effectively paid to eat there, we were told we couldn’t go to these restaurants unless we paid an extra eighty dollars each! Interestingly, both bbqs were ultimately cancelled, and I have no doubt this was because no one wants to pay 80 dollars for a meal when they can eat elsewhere for no extra cost. 3) The same applies to the deli – we were supposed to be able to take any items from here at no extra charge because of the package we’d chosen. However on one occasion we were presented with a bill. The deli staff gave an explanation we couldn’t understand so we went to reception and asked. Apparently, despite telling you that the premium package includes the deli, it actually only includes drinks and items from behind the counter. Everything else you are charged for. We pointed out that this information isn’t advertised anywhere, including in the deli itself, and we were told that the unexpected charge would be ‘taken care of’. I took that to mean it would be removed from our bill, but on checkout we found it wasn’t and we were just too worn down to challenge it. So I don’t know what ‘taken care of’ means, since no signs appeared in the deli giving customers the correct information either. 4) The Jacuzzi gets very dirty – a combination I suppose of water sitting in the heat and getting in with suntan lotion on (which you have to do or you’d fry as the deck isn’t covered) – I had to ask twice to get it cleaned once, and then they didn’t clean it again for the rest of the stay anyway, despite the film of dirt around the edge being quite obvious. Not very inviting and we stopped using it when it started to feel slimy. 5) When we arrived three bottles of coke in the mini bar were open, and had clearly been partially drunk as the levels were different. We didn’t complain as the minibar was included in our package and we wouldn’t have been charged anyway but this is clearly very unhygienic and sloppy on housekeeping’s part. So please check lids before drinking anything. 6) Forget a lie in – even if you put your do not disturb on the cleaning staff will pound incessantly on your door until you get up and answer it. This happened on both occasions that we tried to sleep late (and by that I mean until 10am, not the middle of the afternoon). 7) Upon arrival we asked about the bike hire. We were told that the bike shed was closed for maintenance, no idea how long for, maybe a few days. We spotted by chance the next day that it was open, but when we went in they’d run out of adult bikes, despite the fact that the resort only seemed to be half full. It was not open any of the other times we passed by. So if you’re hoping for a slow bike ride to explore the island, don’t count on it. 8) The resort was quite quiet while we were there, so there was quite a laid back attitude to stocking up and cleaning the pool areas. We often found no towels and one morning we arrived to find all the sun loungers and tables covered in bird excrement. A pile of soggy party streamers was lying by the Beach Club bus stop for the last three days of our stay, and who knows how much longer after we left. 9) When we went to collect our complimentary snorkelling gear (as their website says it’s included in our package), the young man told us it wasn’t included and wanted to charge us nine dollars each per day. We had to go to reception to complain and the receptionist had to come with us to sort it out, expressing her frustration to us as she said she’d only just come back from there to tell them the same thing for another guest. 10) While picking up our snorkelling gear, we asked about snorkelling trips. We were told that if we can swim well and without needing to be watched, we should use our activities vouchers (our package entitled us to two free activities each) for something else. We then specifically asked where the best place was to snorkel and we were told to swim 30 metres from the jetty. Frustratingly, no one at any point told us about the free boat trips out to their snorkelling platform six times a day. My partner discovered this by chance on our second last day while talking to someone on the beach. Since snorkelling was one of our main reasons for choosing this trip, he would have been out there every day if anyone had bothered to tell us. This is an extremely sore point for us as he missed out on what was supposed to be the big highlight of the trip. Maybe this information was hidden away somewhere that we were supposed to stumble across it, but it’s especially frustrating that even when we explicitly asked no one told us. 11) There is a lot of dead coral washed up on the beach so it’s not the soft white sand you imagine. If you’re planning on going in the water it’s a good idea to get booties unless you don’t mind walking on what feels like broken glass – but bring them with you as the resort charges 20 dollars for a very basic pair and you can get much nicer and more comfortable ones cheaper elsewhere. 12) Despite being a drone free area, we twice saw drones flying over us. To be fair, there is a limit to how effectively the staff can police this and we did see them telling a guest to stop when they saw him, but please be aware that there should be NO EXPECTATION OF PRIVACY in your accommodation, which if you’ve booked a room with a private deck/Jacuzzi is extremely disappointing, but be warned unless you want to end up in someone’s creepy home video. 13) There are lots of families at the resort – so there is a lot of splashing and bawling in the pool areas, not to mention parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles hollering at each other from across the pool as if they’re the only people there. If you’re travelling as a couple for a romantic and relaxing break, you may want to consider if this is the right atmosphere for you. 14) Lastly, and worst of all, is the problem they seem to have with transfers. We paid 550 dollars each for the seaplane transfer as it was the quickest option. We were told it would only take 40 minutes which sounded excellent and since we wanted to maximise the amount of time we spent on the island, we chose that option. What they don’t tell you is that THEY choose your flight time and are more concerned about saving money by grouping together as many guests as they can than ensuring you get a good service. We told them weeks before our trip that our flight home was 11pm from Male. We were not told at that stage that choosing the cheaper option of local flight/boat trip might actually have given us more time on the island. The night before our departure we were given a note saying we had to checkout at 2pm to leave the island at 3pm. We were extremely upset about this. We ended up spending 7 hours in Male airport (before a 15 hour journey home), made even worse by the fact that when we got there we discovered you can’t actually go into the airport until three hours before your flight so you’re either stuck sitting out in the heat by Burger King using some extremely odorous toilets or you have to fork out 75 dollars to sit in an airport lounge with yet more odorous toilets. I also don’t think booking an earlier flight home would help, as having read other reviews, one person was made to check out at 4am for a midday flight. They are very cagey about flight times, when I asked why we couldn’t have a later flight, we were given various reasons including that they can’t fly in the dark (well the flight is 45 mins and sun set is 6.20pm so this doesn’t explain it). I believe they are simply trying to save money by limiting the number of flights. Given the huge amount of money they charge their guests for the service this isn’t acceptable to me and is hardly what you expect from a luxury resort who should put their guests’ experience first at all times. Kandima will no doubt say that some of these issues could have been avoided if we’d attended their welcome talk. Well, who wants to go to an induction class when they’re on holiday? But either way, no one actually told us about this talk when we arrived. An information book in the room is the very least you expect in any hotel. There is some limited information on the TV info channel, but this didn’t even show the restaurant opening hours for our last day which also weren’t given to us in our booklet, so we ended up yet again arriving at our chosen restaurant to find it closed. The Maldives is beautiful and I would go back there in a heartbeat. But I cannot recommend Kandima. All these issues, especially in the context of HOW MUCH WE PAID for what was supposed to be a once in a lifetime trip to celebrate a very special occasion, were extremely disappointing. I wish I’d paid more attention to the less positive reviews before I’d booked. I can see that many people have rated it very highly and maybe people who choose cheaper packages are less bothered by some of the issues (indeed many of our issues related specifically to our package), but certainly if you pay for the premium package you won’t feel that you are getting your money’s worth and I wouldn’t recommend.
"beautiful 3km beach"
Kandima is a beautiful island with 3km long beach on the lagoon side. the other side has no beach. water is clear and warm and one cannot describe that beautiful blue, turquoise color. our beach pool villa was amazing, huge room and bathroom, clean, lovely pool in which you can swim a little bit and wifi was working very very good. the island is a bit windy and they have a huge pool that is usually surrounded by kids and their parents. and the restaurant is good. flavour restaurant in the middle is a bit hot and we liked zest restaurant at the end of the island so much better. but zest was closed because there were not enough people on the island. shame! we had full board. the food was sometimes a bit spicey. missed spaghetti pasta and ice cream. got a yummy chocolate cake for free for my birthday. diving center is great and anna and alin are great diving teachers. the coralls are colorful in the dhaalu atoll but some coralls are broken as everywhere in the maldives. seaplane is worth the price and so much faster although we got woken up once around 6am due to the seaplane leaving the island with passengers. stuff is very friendly and helpful. the best is the beautiful beach, it took us 30 min to walk from the middle of the island to each end of the island. we did this walk almost every day.
to start that in booking.com and in trip advisor its mentioned 5 stars, knowing that when u reach there u discover from the welcome car to the resort thats its a 3+ stars and as they call it the employees "life style resort". the welcoming when u reach the island is nothing from the Maldivian traditions ( such as tropical music and celebration and drums) the manager " Jeremy": as a person he is good knowing that he has zero customer service knowledge and no communication skills, unprofessional , in one word WRONG PERSON IN WRONG POSITION the assistant manager "Abdullah": most of the time scared to take decision and action , himself and the manager have never gave any solution for anything, they wait to get it from the client after a negotiation. the marketing "Daniel": he is a good person trying to help and make ur life easier than his managers. entertainment "Dany" : always happy trying to do the impossible to spread the positivity in him over the island thru the music and the programs ( knowing that i see a limitation in resources presented to him , am sure he can do better with more resources . the beach club pool " timothy" : always smiling , very helpful , never saying NO for anything, he will always try to find a way with the chef to please you. the restaurants : the CHEFS veryyyy professional , presentable , helpful , smiling , the food is good , with only a wish to upgrade the buffets , the private pool , u can see pictures of the pool after 10 days of usage IF YOU ARE EXPECTING A LUXURIOUS 5 STARS MALDIVIAN EXPERIENCE , THAN DEFINITELY KANDIMA IS NOT THE CHOICE . FOR THE SAME AMOUT KANDIMA CHARGE IVE HAD A BETTER EXPERIENCE IN OTHER REAL 5 STARS RESORT THEY MAKE U FEEL IN HEAVEN .
We are currently staying in an aqua villa with jacuzzi. Sadly only one more night left but we have had a wonderful time. The staff are very friendly and helpful especially the restaurant staff. The food is amazing thanks to head chef Manjula and his fellow chefs, great selection and delicious. I have to also mention the chef that makes the naan bread, So yummy and he made sure we had a new variety to try every night. (I haven’t got his name unfortunately) The water is absolutely beautiful. And the views from are villa are breathtaking. We will definitely be back.
