We recently stayed at The Andaman for a week in January 2017. We booked a jungle view room but as we were staying for 7 nights we were kindly upgraded to a sea view room on the 4th floor. The pool is very big and great for kids - there is even a big yellow slide. There's a lot of children and families here, so if you are looking for a quiet couples getaway, this may not be the resort for you. We went as a couple and loved the location as it is brilliant for nature lovers. Make the most of the morning/evening nature walks as they are brilliant. We did ours with Shakira who was excellent - so knowledgable and very friendly. Also go and check out the coral nursery (don't wear sunscreen if you want to get in) - it's an excellent add on that the hotel have. The girls that work there are brilliant. The beach is lovely - very big and you can walk straight down to The Datai Hotel if you fancy exploring (I hear they have a great lily pond, we ran out of time to check that out!) There are plenty of sunbeds and friendly staff around should you wish to order anything from the bar. We found the beach bar food to be excellent. The soft drinks however are massively overpriced, so just ask for free ice water if you are on a budget. The happy hour cocktails are nice - I think this started at 5pm. Very nice touch that they invite guests for drinks with the staff each week - they even took a photo and delivered it to our room. I thought that was excellent, as a couple we don't have many photos together from our trip, so it's a lovely keepsake. The only thing that let the Andaman down for me was the room. Our room (433) was showing signs of wear & tear. There were marks on the furniture and you could clearly see where they had tried to do paint touch ups on the walls as they stood out like a sore thumb. It was a good size though and the bath/shower were excellent. Definitely hire a car if you are staying here for a week - drive in to Cenang for a look around (shops, restaurants) and definitely go to the night market. We went to the Friday night market and it was one of our best meals in Langkawi and cost a couple of quid. It's a buzzing atmosphere and only about 25 minutes from the hotel. Tip For Driving: Get the Langkawi booklet from hotel reception which talks about the island activities. On the last page there is a pull out road map - I only discovered this on our last day and it would have been so helpful to have! The hire car companies give you a very basic yellow map which isn't very accurate as doesn't list road numbers. We hired a car online from Big Thumb who were excellent - 80 ringgit a day for a brand new car. They deliver the car to the hotel for you, and you can drop back to the airport. Sky Cab is close by and also worth doing - stunning views from the top. We also booked a mangrove tour with Mangrove Tours by Bard, which was fantastic. Cost about 85 ringgit per person and lasted half a day. Highly recommend that - we booked in Cenang with Economic Joy Travel the day before. I used the spa for an express manicure and pedicure (about £40 for both) which was lovely - the view from the spa is gorgeous. Overall this is a brilliant hotel with great staff, and fantastic for nature lovers. The wifi is also excellent - works everywhere!
"One of the best resorts on the planet"
Staying 5 nights, 6 days at the Andaman and we couldn't be happier. The way the hotel seamlessly blends into nature clearly shows they care about the preservation of surroundings and natural beauty. The room: we had a corner room in the North Wing (highly recommend the north wing for bay views). The room was spacious and clean with maid service twice a day. The view was fantastic and the bed comfortable. The resort: although we planned to leave the resort, we never did. We couldn't pull ourselves away from the surroundings, the sounds and the overall beauty. One more bonus- very few mosquitoes (the guide on the site tour gave kudos to the fruit bat on the property that eats 5k mosquitoes per day- thank you bat). The food: haven't had a bad bite yet. Definitely splurge for the special buffet if you're lucky enough to stay when they're having one. The nature tour: the best (and only) cultural experience we had. Do both the day and the night tour, you won't be disappointed. Overall, price to value, this resort cannot be beat. We have stayed all over the world, including the st. Regis in Bora Bora, and the Andaman was still our favorite . We will definitely be back. Thank you!
We stayed in a garden view room at The Andaman Langkawi for 3 nights in December 2016. The bedroom was somewhat old looking and was rather dark. However the bathroom appeared to have been renovated recently and was nicely done up. The Andaman has sprawling grounds; there is a large swimming pool with a children's slide and some distance away, a coral nursery. The coral nursery was excellent; the staff will give you a guided tour and provide a running commentary on the corals and other sea creatures in the nursery. Be sure not to wear sunscreen when going into the nursery as it affects the corals' survival. Next to the nursery is a sea sports centre where you can borrow/rent water sports equipment like snorkelling gear, kayaks etc. For our meals, we dined at The Restaurant and Jala. The breakfast buffet at The Restaurant is alright but nothing really stood out. The food and ambience at Jala are outstanding (which I will review separately). Reservations are a must as Jala fills up quickly every night. For me, the best reason to stay at The Andaman has to be the magnificent beach, Datai Bay. The sands are white and the waters a clear aqua green. We managed to see some fishes and corals while snorkelling. It was a truly memorable experience.
"Nature lovers paradise! "
I recently stayed in the Andaman for 7 nights as part of a 3 week holiday around Maalysia and overall was very impressed with the experience. My girlfriend and I are big nature lovers and I did my research when booking this hotel as it's surrounded by jungle one side and a gorgeous beach the other. The Andaman is a little "off the beaten track" so I'd advise booking a hire car when staying here as you'll want to see the rest of Langkawi. The hotel does run a shuttle bus but this is limited to two alternating locations depending on the day and with only 1 drop off and pick up time it's very restrictive. When we arrived we was upgraded to a luxury sea villa, however from the online pictures this seems to be the same as the jungle deluxe room but with a sea view ( although our view was still mostly jungle). The rooms are nice enough, nice bath and shower and a large comfy bed. Doesn't scream lavish 5 Star accommodation but nice enough. What sets the Andaman apart from the rest is the experience, surrounding the Hotel you have some of the oldest jungle on the planet and one of the nicest beaches on the island. The pool is large and never seemed too busy, you may however find you are sharing the pool with more than just other guests as quite often the resident monitor lizard may take a quick dip! This is all part of what makes the Andaman so unique. Although you may see the odd "cheeky" crab eating Macaque around the complex the monkeys are not nearly as confident as you find in other parts of Malaysia and Thailand, As tourists are actively asked not to feed them. If you wait till the tide is out you may even see the Macaques looking for crabs amongst the rocks. I was lucky enough to see them catch a few crabs and after many many encounters with this primate I have to say it's great to see these monkeys in a more natural environment. The Macaques are not the only primate within the hotel grounds, you also have the dusky leaf monkey which although a little more shy can often be seen in the trees around the pool. You also have the slow loris and flying lemurs!!! The hotel runs free morning and evening walks with very knowledgeable guides, thanks to the guides I was fortunate enough to see flying lemurs gliding over my head from tree to tree! From land to the nearby sea, The Andaman runs a coral rebuilding programme, as a lot of the coral in the Datai bay was destroyed during the Tsunami. There is a coral nursery where they grow and nurture coral before rebedding it into the bay. Within the coral nursery you can snorkel under the supervision of a member of staff. They will guide and explain the different types to coral and fish to you and how the And man is helping to rebuild the reef. This was another amazing complementary experience. The Andaman has 3 restaurants all offer fantastic food at a reasonable price. Where the Andaman falls down for me is with the pricing on its drinks, soft drinks and and alcohol. Alcohol is very cheap in langkawi it's the only place in Malaysia where is it cheap. I was having beers for as little as 5 RM in restaurants outside the hotel. The Andaman however charge around 21 RM for half a pint, soft drinks are relatively worse you'll be paying 16 RM for a can of soft drink which is around £4. Frankly I think it's disgusting that a hotel is charging this much for a soft drink, again these drinks are as little as 2RM in a shop or 5RM in a restaurant outside the hotel. A chocolate milkshake is around 30RM - £6, I was so annoyed by drinks prices that after a few days I was buying drinks from outside the hotel and then having them by the pool the next day. Another issue I had was with the cleaning staff, although always very pleasant, they only seemed to knock on our door in the 30 minutes during the day we was in the room. Now this could be just bad luck on our part, but usually we would go out around the island or be by the pool/ beach during the day then return around 5/6 to get ready for dinner. On 5 occasions out of 7 when getting ready for dinner the housekeeping staff would be knocking on the door or trying to enter. This is hard to understand when the room has been unoccupied during the day for around 7- 8 hours that only in the evening when most people are returning to the room are the rooms being cleaned. Lastly the staff at the bar are extremely slow, on the rare occasion we had a drink you would be waiting between 10-15 minutes for it to arrive. There were 3 bar staff who constantly forgot our orders and seemed to take forever to poor two drinks. The bar wasn't even busy, a maximum of 12 people would be using the bar in the evening and everything was incredibly slow. Becuase of the following points the maximum I could award the Andaman would be 4 stars, in reality this should be a 5 Star resort, but it isn't without faults. Management needs to look at its pricing for drinks becuase they're basically robbing the guests on soft drinks and for a sold out hotel to have 12 people in their bar clearly shows the beer is over priced. Even in London I wouldn't pay £4-5 for half a pint and that's saying something Stunning views, great beach, good food, adequate rooms and a lot of wildlife.
The Andaman is a beautiful hotel located in Datai bay, Langkawi It is directly located on the beach. Rooms and very nice, big and clean All the services from the hotel are good and there are nice restaurants to dine (we tried 2 of them, the Malaysian and the Japanese, they were excellent). Close to the hotel you can enjoy flora, fauna and scenic views. You can watch reptiles, butterflies, birds, primates or other wildlife. A fantastic vacation.
