"Great place, hotel is OK"

Obviously the island and sourroundings are amazing. Crystal clear waters, white sand beaches and a coral reef on your doorstep. No matter what hotel, you will have a great time in the Perhentians. Tuna bay resort is a reasonable hotel, but quite expensive. Value for money is a bit out of sync, but could be due to the remote location. We had a deluxe chalet, which was pretty basic in terms of interior. Beds are quite hard, but A/C and shower works good. A chalet with seaview is very much recommendable. I would not like to stay in the rooms around the garden. Beds are available on the beach, but are very hard (just wood). Restaurant has good choice and the evening BBQ is excellent. Staff is friendly, but again.. things are not cheap. WiFi is as good as non-existing, but that's a good thing on a relaxing beach for me. Our travel service (arranged by Tuna Bay) did not went too smooth. On the inbound trip, the hotel forgot to arrange our taxi, so no transport was waiting for us at the airport (while arranged way in advance and confirmed several time). Not a great start. You're probably better off arranging this yourselve. All in all we had expected more from the hard product (rooms), but the sourroundings absolutely make up for it.

"Great holiday resort"

My reservation experience wasn't so go, otherwise Tuna Bay would have gotten 5 stars. It was next day email reply (if they replied at all) and I was getting ready to look at Coral Bay Resort when my wife called them (speaking Bahasa) and suddenly things seemed to happen. They need to straighten things out in reservations for certain. Otherwise, Tuna Bay was awesome. My teenage daughter and I went for a 5 day diving trip there and were completely satisfied. The mini-bus from the KB airport to the jetty was waiting for us at the airport arrival hall and I would consider their demeanour to be professional yet friendly and their driving very safe by Malaysian standards. The office at the jetty was also professional and friendly and helped us not worry about the process - clearly it was all taken care of. The boat transfer (The Tuna Express) is a nice sized boat with a toilet. Moderately fast and large enough to be a smooth ride so its perfect for poor boat travellers. I would definitely recommend getting the transportation package. The check in was very friendly and smooth. We were soon sitting in our sea-side chalet. We looked around and found the Universal dive shop right next door and my daughter immediately took her refresher. Universal dive shop was awesome. You can see my review of them if you wish. Tuna Bay gives you a card to facilitate payment on your room bill and the entire food and beverage system there is computerized. I especially have to mention Tony (the food & beverage manager/supervisor on shift when we where there). Tony gave it the friendly touch that made things really nice to be there and we noticed when he was present the other staff really made an extra effort as well. The chalet itself was very nice. Basic, but clean and in good repair. The only amenities they supply are towels, sanitary bags, shampoo, soap and a bottle of water each but that really is sufficient. I don't think anybody really needs shoe shine while staying there..... The view from the sea side chalet is gorgeous, and we were very happy with it. However, since the chalets only have a king sized bed option I had to take the option of a mattress on the floor. Not the best mattress (more of a pallet actually) but it served the purpose. (By the way, my daughter says the king sized bed was fabulous!!). You will see from other reviews that they switch generators 3 times a day and the A/C needs to be reset each time. Its not a big deal. Just press a green button.... The beach is excellent. Not quite what some people are raving about but it is pretty darned nice. Very clean (especially for SE Asia) and with a good amount of coral and sea life there. Snorkelling right off the beach is an option and we did it between dives. Only bad thing I saw was a nearby 1 meter plus titan trigger fish by the government jetty. I can foretell some bad things happen there, especially with some tourist group hordes that do not understand the danger the Titans can pose. Of course, there are other dangerous forms of sea life there too but the Titans are the biggest we saw. The mosque across the water on the other island provided some noise pollution, but was not horrible. We had much worse at the KB airport. The staff overall were very friendly and helpful. The squirrels are even friendly (I wouldn't count on the titan triggerfish tho). The food was the highest quality within a 10 minute walk even if it was a little more expensive. You can even get beer, wine and spirits there - for you Malaysian travel experts you will know how significant that is. The beach has proper lounge chairs with umbrellas too. The check out was as painless as the check in. Very easy and efficient. The only thing missing was a detailed restaurant bit but it roughly tallied with my estimate so I was happy. The transportation back was also excellent (although we were unnecessarily rushed onto the boat with false pretence - yes I asked around) and so with a few minor issues and only one major (booking the reservation) I can honestly say this was the best holiday place I have ever stayed at in Malaysia. And I have lived here for almost 10 years.

"Medium class hotel with OK service"

Tuna Bay Island Resort is a medium class hotel to a medium class price. We did book one “Deluxe Beachfront Chalet” and one “Deluxe Standard Chalet” as there was only one Beachfront available. The Standard Chalet is exactly the same room but in second row back to back with the Seafront Chalet with an inside connection. As we got two connecting rooms it was no disadvantage to have one of each. The standard rooms are much cheaper and we did only use the seafront door. The rooms do have 24 hours AC even if the key is not in. There is also a safety box but no fridge nor wifi. A poor wifi is available in the restaurant. The breakfast is quite OK and so is the dinner. A disadvantage is that there are no outside tables even if there is a wooden deck outside the restaurant. It would be so nice sitting on the beach in the evening which is possible on other restaurants. Luckily there are boat taxis that goes to other beaches where they do have tables on the beach. The service is OK and we can recommend the snorkelling tours. The second-floor bar has a surprisingly big assortment of wines. The hotel has wooden sunbeds but no mattresses! Just outside the beach is a reef. Not fantastic but still a reef ten meters away. Unfortunately it is protected by angry fishes that did bite anybody that passed the reef border from the sandy area. It was possible to pass but you have to do it quick. We booked directly with the hotel as all booking sites said it was fully booked. The hotel home page has secure booking without money transfer.

"Beautiful unspoiled island resort (so far...)"

We chose a room on the beach which was lovely - the rear rooms are great too. Rooms are basic but clean and simple - exactly what you want on a small island retreat and some of the bigger hotels of the world could learn from the brilliant interconnecting front-to-back room set up - just perfect for families or groups who want a bit of privacy but want to be together too. The beach is perfect and lots of coral and fish to see diving and snorkeling (Martin at Universal Diver was excellent). Food at restaurant basic but fine - breakfast ok. Staff generally good and helpful particularly Rebecca and Tan but the 'barman' in the Tuna bar upstairs could do with learning a bit about service with a smile and being a bit more pleasant to people! Reservations need to up their act a bit too as they rarely replied to emails and gave incorrect information repeatedly. We were lucky as it was quite quiet - not too spoiled by loud selfish people, mostly caring quiet folks wanting to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.

"A nice vacation we had."

We enjoy the 3d2n and we all have the same idea 4d3n or 5d4n is even better. -The staffs are friendly, and provide suggestion to us. (still some is impatience) -The room is good, provide bath towel and beach towel, 500ml mineral water for each pax daily. - The sea is suit for swimming and snorkeling as well. -Snorkeling to Rawa island is the best, we purchased the Rawa island snorkeling trip separately. -We even get free coconut from the local nearby. Have fun.
