Over Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa

Our favorite

"Isolated. Lovely"

Positives: Peaceful. Great pool. Very nice rooms. Beautiful scenery. Helpful staff. Great breakfast. Very nice pool bar and restaurant. Good restaurants on site. Nice well-equipped gym. Negatives: can feel a bit trapped as isolated. Room service disappointing. Housekeeping not to 5 star standards. We would return but it's a bit too pricey for service and food levels. It's location is a make or break for guests. We loved the seclusion and that we could stayed cosseted by beautiful mountains and relative luxury or go out and engage "the real world".

"Just returned from our 11th visit.....and here's several reasons why we are planning our 12th!!"

   16-01-2017
Just back from a week break at Shangri La Al Jissah Resort & Spa - Al Waha. For over a decade we have enjoyed almost annually...our little piece of tranquil, restful and pampered luxury...at this Resort (and it's neighbouring Al Bandar) This visit was no different. So many of the talented and courteous staff recognised us....and so many we now know by first name. There's Deepak, a remarkable gentleman that manages to get us the fairest and optimal stay package; Pramod and his colleagues...Celestina, Melchor, Erick, Vaz, Nitin..who help/advise on our wonderful meals at the numerous outlets and themes buffet nights...and always so effortlessly and with a smile and a joke. Trevor, Mark, Radha...to guide the activities..sea or indoors..exactly as they know we like...and they always seem one step ahead. And of course, Nadiya..always so pleasant at the Front desk..and forever watching over 'Guest well-being'. We aim for a 're-charge' at the end of a busy year...tending to choose December. The steady 30degrees of daily sun and outdoor swimming pools of the same temperature...so unique and so enjoyable...help with our revitalising. Our quest for a week of fine qaulity (and healthly) food is made so easy here. The breakfast and evening buffets at Al Tanoor are a favourite. The World's gourmet dishes spread around...and with a staggering visibility of Chefs from around the globe...including this time new culinary experts from Myanmar, Nepal, India, Middle East, we met. Clearly a bias when we have visited so often; but this Shangri La resort still gets top marks from us. The personal attention and the Guest relations we find quite special. They have a knack of never saying 'No'. Also able to meet new General Manager, Mr Jurgen Dorr...very amiable and able to share/compare with him our experiences of Shangri La Resorts. A direct flight, London to Muscat, a scenic drive through the mountains to get to the Resort..then a relaxing stay where everything works effortlessly to allow a week of well-earned luxury. It is escapism, of course....but with a magnetism...to return.

""Beautiful Views - A worthy 5 Star!" "

   15-01-2017
Tonight is our last night in the Shangri La and it's amazing. Smack on top of the ocean, the views are to die for!! The pool is lovely and big and, thankfully, heated. The hotel also has a nice big lazy river that connects from one hotel to the other. The food is of good quality but I think it would definitely be better to go get a taxi to a nice restaurant on the cliff's. Oman is just a lovely place and I hope to be back in the future!

"Beautiful "

This place is a bit outside the city, but well worth it. The rooms aren't wow, but the Surroundings are. The staff are friendly and helpful. The breakfast is not to bad, but I would head into town for lunch and diner.

"Gorgeous location"

   12-01-2017
We were a large family group of 11 persons who stayed over for Christmas and NY's at the child-friendly Al Waha of the three-hotel-group as we had a three-yr-old in our group. My husband and I stayed the longest - for 16 days so we really experienced it all! The location is spectacular, the beach is better than those of the Ritz-Carlton (Al Bustan) or the Chedi - or other beaches we saw during our excursions. The sun does disappear from the beach at 3:00 in December so you have to plan your day accordingly. We did dine twice at the fanciest hotel, the Al Husn, before the toddler arrived. The Sultanah was our favourite. The Shahrazad was fine, but they served far too much food, it detracted a bit from the experience. I will say, that we ended up being somewhat relieved that we weren't at the Al Husn hotel as we witnessed at least 4 giant Indian weddings based there during our long stay and that must have been very disruptive to the regular guests at the Al Husn. No worries about that at the Ah Waha! We ate at every other restaurant in the resort, the worst was Asia, over at the Souk and Games complex. The service was appalling, despite the restaurant being almost empty. Drinks were continually forgotten, food delivered haphazardly, etc. The fish restaurant, Bait al Bahr was the best of the rest, the others, including the Italian were average-acceptable. The breakfast buffet at our Samba restaurant was very good, and the egg chefs very friendly and competent, but the table service (only tea and coffee, not too hard!) was always slow and often incorrect. And I was actually a bit hurt that after a week, let alone after our 16 days, with such a big family group, that we didn't get a hello Mr/Mrs X (we have a very simple, one-syllable last name) each morning. My husband has stayed in 30+ Shangri-las and is a Golden Circle member. The spa area is fabulous, we all had various wonderful treatments. The gym is good and the classes were fun with an enthusiastic trainer. The affiliated diving centre was very competent. The 'toys' on the beach were varied, some of our group booked the 'banana ride' but I agree with another reviewer that the prices for usage were too high. The snorkling on the mini reef right in front of the beach is very good, many of us saw turtles and cuttle fish. The maid service, including turn-down service was better than average. The room service food was actually better than the beach lunch bar food and the room service food came quickly and with very friendly service staff. The front desk service was not up to Shangri-la standard. Not very friendly, it was indifferent. Also, each time we requested something, from airport pick-up to room allocations/keys for our big group, they took a very long time looking up our details all over again. To conclude: spectacular setting with beautiful beach and stunningly lit-up cliffs at night. Fine dining in the upscale hotel Al Husn. Beautiful spa. Good sports facilities. Average service. We would book it again, probably trying the mid-level hotel, the Al Bandar next time.
