Over Mount Lavinia Hotel

"Must improve the service and invest some money in restoration work"

   19-02-2017
Like a lot of the tourist industry in Sri Lanka, this hotel has to get its act together when it comes to customer service. They should begin by answering emails which they don't. After 3 attempts to contact them (3 different addresses from their website) I had to make an expensive international phone call to book an airport pickup! The building is wonderful and has a wonderful history however much of it needs to be done up. The corridors to the rooms in the ground floor remind you of The Shinning. You expect the twins to show up any moment! The location and surrounding beaches are very nice. But be aware you are at quite a distance from Central Colombo. You decide: do you want pleasant clean air and sea or do you want to be near the centre. The food and service in the main dining room (Governor) are both poor and they don't seem to have understood that you have to clear tables for the next guests and that if a table cloth is stained you should change it. The food is not very good but it is very expensive. By contrast, the fish restaurant on the beach is one of the best we have tried in Sri Lanka and very reasonably priced. The service is also much better so they should use the in-house expertise to improve things. Finally, this hotel is no good for people with mobility problems or handicaps. Lots of stairs cannot be avoided. A lot of international hotel chains are now building in Colombo. Mount Lavinia could be an excellent competitor offering a very different experience. But for that they need to seriously look at the customer service, offer and refurbishment. Otherwise they will end up losing the business to the big boys

"Poor hotel"

When you walk into reception you think, very nice 5 star hotel, but when you go to your room you think 2 star just. Paint was falling off of the walls in the room and bathroom, the corridors were in need of a paint also. The shower was a disgrace, the shower tray was heavily stained with black scratch marks, the shower doors were black at the bottom and filthy and also black between the shower tray and tiles. If you have the misfortune to stay in this hotel make sure you do not have a room on the other side of the courtyard from reception as this hotel is built VERY close to a main railway line which runs right underneath the rooms. There is a station about 100 mts from the hotel and all you hear all day is the train horns as they leave the station starting at least 05.00 in the morning. One good thing is the choice of food is good but if eating on the outside tables the hotel allows smoking when other guests are eating, disgusting. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone but if you are with a tour you might not have a choice.

"Grand old hotel"

   16-02-2017
Stayed here on our last night of 9 day tour. We arrived about 6pm and checked out at 2.00am for our flight home. Wished we could have stayed longer. The buffet dinner was excellent with a wide choice. The staff were polite. The room was dated but must have been top notch in its day. Was very clean which is the main thing. They made us a packed breakfast to take with us to the airport which was very welcome. Would love to visit again someday and explore more. Sad romantic story of the Governor & his love.

"Beautiful place to unwind"

   16-02-2017
The hotel is right on the ocean, with lovely views, long beach walks, good swimming, a beautiful pool area. The staff is helpful and nice, and the breakfast buffet is just incredible, Save your appetite for the fresh fruit and local specialties--I particularly loved the egg hoppers.

"Tired colonial grandeur still charging grand colonial prices"

   16-02-2017
There's no arguing that when you arrive at the hotel and are met at reception by immaculately dressed staff wearing white 'military style' uniforms you can't help feeling impressed and excited about what lies ahead. Unfortunately the bedroom and en suite bathroom that we were allocated did not match the outward facing grandeur. Both rooms were very tired and needed a thorough overhaul. The bedroom was completely atmosphere less with plain walls and minimal, dark furniture. Saying that the bedding was of good quality and the bed itself comfortable. The en suite bathroom needed a thorough clean with noticeable dust/grim accumulated on the window frame and 'picture rail' on top of the tiled area. The room had a dank, musty smell which I can only assume came from the open drain cover - a relic of its colonial past? To be fair I mentioned this when we went back to reception to use the hotel facilities and it was fixed; in a hotel in this price bracket it should have been fixed before our arrival. This is where my criticism of the Mount Lavinia ends. The location of the hotel itself on a headland over-looking the Indian Ocean, the dining areas both inside and out, the pool and surrounding seating/sun bathing area and the food served (we ate two breakfasts, one lunch and one dinner during our stay) were all excellent. The staff we encountered were all friendly, professional and very helpful. All in all a great experience sadly spoilt by the quality of our bedroom and bathroom. NOTE: I have given the Mount Lavinia an 'Average' rating rather than a 'Very Good' purely on the grounds that, in my opinion, the quality of the rooms did not reflect the price charged.
