Over Mount Lavinia Hotel

"Historical beauty"

I have grown up in Sri Lanka with many visits to Mount Lavinia hotel. It's colonial style and charm is something so special that many Of my friends choose it as a perfect place to get married. Mount Lavinia Hotel boasts its own private beach which ensures that if you stay here and want to ask in the sun, no beach boys or local sellers would bother you. The food at Mount Lavinia hotel is especially worth a mention. For some reason, you can really tell the difference between their food and any other hotel's food when it comes to their buffets. It's clear that they only hire the most qualified and experienced chefs. I would say the hotel needs some refurbishment. However overall, I would definitely choose this hotel for a day out or a posh family dinner ❤️The views, ambience and service is just worth it!

"A lovely way to finish our visit to Sri Lanka"

Great room, ocean views, delicious food, beach front, deck chairs to enjoy a quiet drink or two, ( but be mindful of those mozzies) air conditioner and de-humidifier made the stay very enjoyable. The staff were incredibly helpful at all times and the local shopping was a treat to explore.

"Very disappointed"

Having been to Sri Lanka many times and always stayed at the mount Lavinia unfortunately after this last trip recently will not be going again. My feet swelled due to cabin pressure and heat and i needed a diuretic there is no doctor attached to the hotel as there used to be my husband had to call one from outside on arrival two hours later was charged an extra 1000 rupees as I was a foreigner for three diuretic tablets to take the fluid from my ankles.Talking to other westerns that needed the service for chest infections they were also unhappy at being ripped off for antibiotics by the doctor.Everyone seemed to be out to take money from you there is a 10% service charge they don't tell you about on every single drink you order...not on the final bill but every transaction! So having a snack and a few drinks can be really costly. Two nights of our stay the hotel was on lock down due to bad weather the entertainment was cancelled not much of a disappointment really as it left a lot to be desired with very disinterested musicians and a couple of appalling singers very repetitive night after night. The standard of the Buffett restaurant has diminished badly from previous visits seem to be catering more for the Chinese community with sushi probably due to the massive influx of chinese who are investing heavily on the island. The crows that have become enormous due to available food source are a major problem they fly all around the pool area where people sit and eat and literally take food from your plate and drink from your glass Ugh!..they crap all over your balcony so that's a no go area and are so loud at 6 in the morning no chance of a good rest..the only deterrent there is a man with a catapult who walks around with no desire but to apparently scare them off with the sight of it that makes no difference whatsoever to the aggressive crows!..glad to get home for some peaceful rest .

"Colonial Charmer"

I stayed here first time in 2005 and then came back with family after a decade. There were changes - some that requires immediate attention from the management. Rooms require better upkeep and the furniture, wood-work require a dressing up. The bath and the faucets need a facelift too. However, the charm that this hotel is - is something that I shall come back for. The place transports you to a bygone era and a romantic like me finds the story of Lady Lavinia quite engrossing. The buffet breakfast is something I would look forward to every morning. The real magic happened when we did the dinner at the shack with the freshest catch possible - it was a sea-foodie's paradise! The rain that happened soon added to the charm of the whole experience. This hotel sees a lot of bookings for Weddings. This location which saw the love-story of the Governor and Lady Lavinia has become synonymous with Happily-ever-after weddings (although the original love story wasn't as happy as one would've imagined. Coming back to the hotel experience, these events in the hotel offer you beautiful sights the Lankan wedding - Sinhala, Tamil (the 2 that we happened to see) The rooms are cosy and open to the mighty ocean - and the ocean front rooms offer the best beach-resort experience. At night you can hear the powerful waves hit the rocks at the feet of the hotel. The panoramic view of the ocean and its life in the day-time is another definite treat for your eyes.

"lost so much of its beauty"

I first stayed at this hotel many years ago, but when I returned for a visit this year, I was shocked to discover how much the hotel has gone down. The staff are even frightened of the surveillance cameras, which are not really used for security, but to see what guests are eating and if the staff are talking too much or too little with the guests. The relaxed atmosphere is gone, and the feeling now is one of tension and almost fear.
