Over Mount Lavinia Hotel

"Rooms looking tired"

   21-02-2018
When you arrive the hotel looks amazing and from first impressions it’s definitely worth 5 on TA but the bathrooms in both of the rooms we had could do with a updating. Breakfast was a culinary delight with plenty of choice and all cooked to a high standard. The staff were all amazing and very helpful.

"Nice to visit but not nice to stay"

From the outside the hotel is gorgeous. The architecture and dramatic setting have no rival in the country. However the rooms are not what I was expecting. They are tired, outdated and not very clean. I booked a deluxe full front ocean view and what I got was a room in the basement with an angled view to the ocean. The room looked nothing like the picture and for 150 dollars a night I expected more. The bathroom is old and the curtain was dirty. The furniture was old and tired as well. On top of this, it is noisy and drafty. Again, if this was an old faded glory with prices to match I wouldn’t care so much. However the price is higher than a five star hotel in the city! So it is basically a rip off. On the other hand the pool, beach and restaurants are wonderful and the staff courteous and helpful. I would recommend this property for a day visit and stay at another hotel nearby. The cost does not match the offering by far. Very disappointing and very much false advertisement.

"Simply Superb !"

Stayed for three nights. The reception staff were impeccable with their service. The staff who work breakfast and serve on the Terrace were also magnificent. A special mention to Tiddy, nothing was too much trouble for him. I spent most of the day, down at the Seafood Cove. This private beach was peaceful and very clean. The food from the Seafood Market was exquisite and wonderfully cooked and served by the staff , in particular , Buddhika, Anuruddika, Sunandi and of course Samantha... One thing to note : it was a breath of fresh air to see food Silver served, by the waiting staff, (Buddhika Dias) instead of egotistical chefs messing about and serving the bits and pieces with tweezers.... then presented ! Well done MLH on a splendid job.... I’m definitely coming back ! BRAVO !!!!

"A little tired and disorganised "

Busted the hotel and stayed for 7 nights on a cricket tour. For the purposes of having a team of U15 boys cricketers the hotel was ideal for them primarily due to its location on the beach. From an adult perspective the rooms smelt of damp and 7 of our party had to move, the fixtures and fittings need updating in places and more care needs to be put into cleaning. As is usual in Sri Lanka the staff were always very polite and well meaning however they are in desperate need of hotel training if they are to attract repeat customers. The rooms were poorly cleaned each day and often not really cleaned at all. The pool area is very poorly run and a complete mess most of the time with staff not sure how to service customers used to higher levels of service for the money. Unfortunately the current design for the pool and dining areas all mix into one creating staff confusion and a messy area. Crows are a bit of a menace and are primarily attracted due to food not being cleared away regularly. Some investment will be required to update the areas but much could be improved by inviting in some proper hotel staff training.

"Step back into historic Sri Lanka"

My husband and I finished up our last 3 days in Sri Lanka at Mount Lavinia Hotel. We arrived around 4pm. We had to wait about 15-20 minutes to get our room. The reception desk was very apologetic and offered drinks and refreshments. We received a large corner room on the second floor. It felt like we were staying in a basement was we walked to the room. The ceilings were low. The room was delightfully large and decorated tastefully. We had no complaints about the room except the bathroom. There was mold in the shower and on the walls of the bathroom. I did not bring it to their attention. A little bleach spray could correct that issue. When we first arrived we went to the terrace to order a late lunch. The waiter there was very rude. We ordered a sandwich and some nachos. It took over 30 minutes. He let the plates just land on the table kind of hard. Let's say our first impression of the dining staff was not good. We did have breakfast each day which was nice. The staff was very helpful with the buffet. The buffet had everything you could imagine for every culture. We ordered pina coladas on the beach. The service was good, but they were not cold. No ice. We had to ask for ice in our drinks. The beach was perfect. I usually read everything in the room upon arriving. There was little or no info. Did not see until leaving the hotel about the evening meals in the Governors dining area. Did not see anything about the tour of the tunnel. No map of the hotel of exactly where everything is located. A map would really help. All this info updated in room would make guest feel like there are events going on. The building is beautiful and I feel they are trying. Staff just needs to managed a little better and attention to the mold in the building. We would stay there again. Loved the old time feel. The ocean view from room is a bonus.
