We stayed for one night with a friend, as we really wanted to try this place out and it's absolutely legendary! The service is impeccable, the hotel (room and common areas) are stunningly decorated and the room is so comfortable. I particularly loved the huge bed and the huge bathtub in the room. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
"Return Visit not without its problems"
We have previously stayed at the Shanghai Mansion 2 years before and decided to return so that we could enjoy the bustling street life of Yaowarat yet again. Unfortunately, this time we were left disappointed with a few problems we encountered. The first being that our room smelt strongly of sewerage due to a pipe overhead in the room that is lacking the sufficient flow through & trap to expel the odours. At first we tried to put up with it, but the smell only got worse so we approached management to change our room. They gave us two keys of vacant rooms in which we could choose to change over to, but when we inspected those rooms, they too had the same pungent smell. Management admitted that they knew there was a problem with their plumbing and waste lines, but there was not much they could do about it due to the building being very old. Finally, management decided to move us to the suite room at the front facing end of the building which did not suffer the same issues as there are no visible overhead pipes in the room. The rooms are still beautifully appointed, but due to the layout of the hotel, being that the rooms have no openable windows and are all inside facing, there is a lack of ventilation and airflow and problems such as this are not easily solved. My other gripe was the lack of warmth and hospitality at breakfast time. Being that breakfast is the first thing you do in the morning, I would have hoped to be warmly greeted when going to the restaurant, but instead, as soon as you open the door if felt as though you were being pounced upon, with no greeting, just "what's your name and room number?". I understand that everyone needs to be accounted for as the breakfast is complimentary with the room, but they could at least wait until you sit down at your table and say "Good morning" first. After 4 days of this, I found it to be very annoying and rude and it made me grumpy in the morning to be treated this way. A warm smile can go a long, long way. Apart from these gripes, we still enjoyed the hospitality at the downstairs Cotton Bar with their exquisite cocktails and live jazz every night. The proximity of the hotel is also a bonus if you are wanting to be in the thick of Bangkok's chinatown and all it has to offer. Management are wonderful and really go out of their way to help where they can. The theme of the hotel still lives up to its expectations if its 1920's asian prohibition era you're searching for. I'm not sure if we will return again to Shanghai Mansion, hopefully they will be able to work out some solutions when it comes to clearing the smells from the rooms. Maybe for a one night stay it would be suitable to stay here just to experience the Yaowarat Rd life, but I also feel that any longer than that, you can feel a little couped up. When there is no natural light inside the hotel and the streets outside are super busy and chaotic there's that feeling that you can't really wind down from it all, except in your room...that smells bad...
"The Playhouse Show performing in the Ballroom of this Gorgeous Hotel!!"
What an absolutely gorgeous hotel & how very exciting to see the Playhouse perform their exciting show in this unique Ballroom ---it was all so very lovely! The show itself which has been restructured & produced by Eventastic was as always great fun with great dancers, lovely costumes & great musical numbers that, as always had us dancing in our seats. This Venue is much more intimate than the last one & far easier to get to when staying in Town. The hotel has Jazz bands in the basement so after seeing the Show we popped downstairs for cocktails & to chill out afterwards. It was a fantastic evening & highly recommended for music lovers of all calibres. The Playhouse performs 2 shows a day Mon-Friday, it is a 1 hour show but we could have watched them for 2 !! We all love Live shows & music so were very excited to spend time here. Will certainly be going back on our next trip to BKK. Thoroughly enjoyable!
"Great hotel with even better spa"
Stayed here for one night enroute to Bhutan. Lovely hotel and staff. The entire place is absolutely beautiful and the staff are outstanding. I would definitely stay here again. There spa services are absolutely top notch. Worth the extra money. The food was ok but I didn't want to venture out in the rain to try somewhere else. The one downside to this place is the doors to the adjoining rooms - I could literally hear everything in my neighbors room. I travel with ear plugs and thankfully they were not super loud.
My husband had previously stayed here on a business visit, and liked it so much he took me the next time we went. It's in the heart of Chinatown, busy area with a lot of street food and markets. The hotel itself, has a traditional Chinese look to the exterior and inside the theme continues. We had a courtyard suite. When you go upstairs, there is a high atrium with rooms surrounding a beautiful koi pond. The ceiling is hung with silk lanterns. Very nice too look at. Inside the room, we had a seating area with a traditional Chinese opium bed, two comfy armchairs, and a sideboard area with fridge. The King size bed was to the side, and round the corner, was a beautiful claw foot bathtub. The toilet and shower were enclosed in separate frosted glass cubicles to the side of the bath. The bed was very comfy. We ate in the restaurant downstairs. It was part of our package deal, but we were surpised at how nice the food was. The restaurant itself, is open onto the street at the front and they had a live singer. Not obtrusive. We really enjoyed it. The waiting staff were friendly and attentive. There is only one adverse comment, and again, it's because I'm a bit funny. The room we had, had two full length windows either side of the door. Although they were covered with white net type curtains, they keep a lights on in the courtyard area all night. I cannot sleep with lights on, and the doors were visible from the bed area. Bring good eyeshades if you can't sleep with ambient light in the room. Other than that, everything was great, and we'd happily go back.
