"Unique boutique hotel in the heart of Bangkok's Chinatown"
Just checked out today after a short weekend stay with my family. While not 'perfect,' this hotel impresses right from the start and follows through. From the surprisingly fluent in English doorman to the reception team, especially an extremely professional and welcoming Mr. "Nuay," to the attentive waitstaff at their Red Rose restaurant, everyone at this hotel is clearly well trained and understand what hospitality means. Location wise, you're going to be located right a nice starting point if you're here to either shop or eat or shop and eat, such is that you can easily hop in and out of the hotel all day and night without tiring yourself out. If had to suggest one or two things for improvement, I'd have to say that the walls (at least in our family suite), were a bit thin, or perhaps our neighbors were just a bit loud. Also, being in Asia, I'd have to recommend that the hotel considers installing Japanese or Korean style toilets or at least a toilet sprayer for hygiene purposes. Other than that, really a nice stay and I would recommend looking no further if one were looking for a place to stay in Bangkok's charming Yaowarat Chinatown.
We stayed at Shanghai Mansions for four days mid August. We travelled as a family of two adults and two children. Upon reaching the hotel we noticed that it was slap bang in the hustle and bustle of Chinatown. We were immediately seated and provided our choice of drink and fruit. Check in was quick and smooth. We had booked the basic room and were very surprised at being upgraded to a suite on the second floor! The room was large and consisted of a foyer, a communal area complete with a TV and sofa, a bedroom, bathroom and separate toilet and shower cubicle. Outside was absolutely beautiful with an indoor pond. We completely loved the freestanding bath! One thing is certain- the hotel is serene and beautiful! It's a completely different world to the chaos of Chinatown! The staff are so kind and welcoming. They work very hard to make sure that your needs are met. The hotel is clean well looked after. We wanted to book breakfast on our last day but the staff were very dismissive. We made our way to the third floor and it was understandable why. The choice is limited and at 399THB per adult, it did not seem worth it especially when there are lots of places to eat nearby. An absolutely beautiful hotel with very attentive, caring staff!
"Such a great stay!"
My husband and I had such a great stay here. The hotel is so very stylish and a great relaxing break from the hustle of Bangkok. The rooms were beautifully decorated and displayed. The bed was large and comfortable. There was a safe, TV, hairdryer, fridge with a daily stocked mini bar and a large shower. We booked a package which included daily use of the spa OR dinner for two. We used the spa twice to have the complimentary Thai Massage, both times were very good! And we used the dinner package once, which had 5 set menu options to choose from. The food was nice and portions good, however we preferred using the voucher for the Spa. The hotel is located in the middle of Chinatown, with easy access to the local attractions. It is around a 15 minute tuk tuk (should cost approximately 150-200 thb depending on how good you bargain) ride to other attractions such as the Golden Mount, Wat Pho and Khao San Road. The staff at this hotel were wonderful, which really was the icing on the cake. I would highly recommend this hotel. We had a great time.
"Great - but couple of tweaks needed "
Recently concluded 4 night stay as solo "mature" traveler. Overall Shanghai Mansion exceeded my expectations - especially considering their rates and everything that was included. Everything was as advertised, with no false advertising or bait and switch. Free massage was as advertised - although I was happy to pay very reasonable amount for upgrades. Included dinner - which I also tried 2 of my 4 nights, involved choosing one of 4 options, which in all cases included a starter and a main. Not their most elaborate dishes but very nice and tasty. As other reviewers have mentioned the staff was fantastic. Truly friendly and helpful people. I would like to give recognition to Pitch, Nicca, Ruby, Joy and Ching who were fantastic ! Also - as others mentioned massage was great - good, clean and professional therapists and overall environment. My room (405) was fine and clean with the exception that some portions desperately needed to be dusted ! There was a ton of dust on curtains, tops of lamps, in wood work of Ned and so on. I mentioned this as the time of checkout. I had breakfast at Hotel everyday - which was 400 bhat. A fair price for quality and quantity although some rooms seemed to have breakfast included. Overall, excellent and I would book again in a heartbeat if I returned to Bangkok and wanted to stay in or around Chinatown.
"RIght in the thick of it"
Right in the heart of Chinatown, Shanghai Mansion is in walking distance to everything you could ask for. Great for those on a budget but are still looking for a bit more upscale than a hostel. Book from somewhere other than their website to get the best rate and good promotional offers! The rooms are super clean and the staff are very professional. The free mini bar was very appreciated, and the decor was exceptionally unique and charming (Never had a fake birdcage in my bathroom before). The bed doesn't look comfortable on first impression but is spacious and comfortable. Surprisingly even though you are in the heart of Chinatown, the noise level is quite low (had a street facing room) and offers you an easy sleep. Downstairs has a restaurant that serves both Western and Asian foods, with their cocktails being quite famous combined with live Jazz. Moderately priced, but with some hunting around you can get cheaper if you wish. The lack of breakfast is a bit of a let down, but you can easily go outside to one of the many street vendors and get breakfast for two between 50-100THB. Make sure that you negotiate with the Taxi drivers outside the hotel yourself as the doorman will order from another taxi company (which you wait for) and suggest a higher fee than what you would pay from the line outside.
