"Dinner meh; Spa amazing"

   19-01-2017
As outside guests, our waitress informed us that there was a 1000 Bhat/person minimum. No prob, considering the prices. After we ate some decent tom yum soup, uninspired spring rolls, and dry nondescript fish, we succumbed to getting the check as our waitress was hovering and clearly wanted to end her night. I pulled my credit card out to pay and was informed that the credit card machine closed at 1030pm. Shouldn't you have mentioned that when you mentioned the other stipulations?!? After telling her we still wanted the pay w credit card (as clearly this machine-closing thing makes no sense), she reluctantly stomped off w credit card and came back 5 mins later w a processed tab. And the nerve to include a line for optional additional gratuity! On top of that 10% I just gave you?!? Umm...no. You were already overtipped. Overall, we were anticipating a great dinner after a great spa experience. Instead, we received mediocre eats for almost Western prices w service I might expect from some tacky hotel restaurant. Good ocean view can be a consolation if you come when the sun is up. Or you could just eat at any of the other places on this nice stretch of sand.

"A big, well-located, and beautiful resort with a few quirks and caring staff members"

   19-01-2017
The Santhiya resort is beautiful, with it's ornately carved wooden villas and guest rooms adoring the hillside facing the sea, and the view from the long tail boat from Phuket makes it immediately apparent that it is more impressive than the website suggests. The view from the room is more impressive still, with sweeping, breathtaking views of the Andaman sea, a unique finger-like twin limestone karst structure in the distance, and the neighboring islands beyond. Add an expansive guest room, lovely and decorative silk robes and slippers, and a spacious private balcony featuring a day bed for two, a table for four, and a romantic jacuzzi bath, and it's about as tranquil and luxurious as a five-star resort could be. Indeed, we were very pleased with our accommodations. Our first activity was a visit to the well-appointed spa, where we were welcomed by airy sculpted wooden decor and breathtaking view of the sea over the spa village rooftops. The treatment rooms afford lovely sea views, as well, and tranquil settings, but the option to linger after the treatments was regrettably not offered, which seemed an under-utilization of spectacular facilities. Nevertheless, lovely pre- and post-treatment refreshments, kindly service, and relatively good value inspired return visits every day of our stay. The lounge chair area of the resort seem a bit crowded at a glance, but it's comfortable and convenient, with access to the main pool, showers, outdoor massage, rest rooms, restaurants, and bars, where refreshing fresh fruit smoothies and shakes were on offer. As the beautiful main pool, with its dramatic cascading waterfall, has no shaded lounging options, the lounge chairs on the beach were our best option, and we reserved lounge chairs by about 10:00 am daily to avoid problems with availability. The highlights of our stay were the complimentary resort activities, most notably Muay Thai Boxing (beginner and intermediate levels), Yoga, and Traditional Thai Dance. All classes were conducted by engaging and fun professionals and are highly recommended. Please note that water is in short supply at the resort, in general, with only four bottles provided daily in the rooms, so be advised to bring your own to such activities and beach. Free access to water is available at the sports center, but it's only by the glass and cannot be taken out. And for some odd reason, the resort's shop does not allow guests to charge purchases to the room. Cash payment only. Boat tour excursions were offered by the resort, but the prices seemed a bit high, so we decided instead to arrange our own private excursions around our schedule down the beach from the resort, where several lovely restaurants and massage huts also await resort guests. In our wish to explore the local area, we enjoyed some of the best experiences of our stay, and we recommend others do the same. The Koh Yao Yai island hospitality and food culture are treasures awaiting discovery. The resort itself has a good variety of restaurants, all serving broad selections of fresh and tasty local fare and good service. Two notable points were the draft beer that was available, and a refreshing local craft beer (in bottles), which were nice, unexpected treats to complement our dining experiences. Everything was reasonably priced and presented well. There is a bit of an issue with regards to the tuc-tuc-style shuttle transport to and from the guest rooms and villas and the pools, restaurants, and beach. The island's steep hills practically necessitate its use, and waiting on them can cause delays and inconvenience, if not a lack of privacy. Fortunately, we were near enough to the breezy breakfast restaurant and infinity pool to walk, thereby being able to avoid having to take the shuttle every time we left our room. We were less fortunate when going to the spa, beach, and activities center, however, and had to wait on several occasions for an available transport to arrive. Like all resorts of the scale of Santhiya, it is easy to get lost in the shuffle of guests, and the service isn't always prompt or personal, making us grateful for the individual efforts of several resort staff members. We were given incorrect information regarding meeting our transport upon arrival (it's on the ground level), but the mishap was promptly and competently handled by the woman onsite at the airport, and the mishap ended up being serendipitous for the great private taxi and boat ride that ensued. This, combined with an early check-in, pleased us greatly. Indeed, we are grateful for the conscientious and effective staff members who made these and other small but valuable contributions to the quality of our stay. It is for those professionals, above all, that we can recommend Santhiya Resort with enthusiasm.

"Excellent "

"Beautiful, well organised resort!"

Really enjoyed our stay at this resort and can truly recommend it. Transport from Phuket airport all the way to the island resort was very smooth. A nice variety of restaurants at the resort, a wonderful spa. Clean, more quiet beach. The minivans work well and frequently around the resort. Could go back anytime!

"Not what we expected"

   17-01-2017
Please bear in mind that I travel often and do understand that there are cultural differences. With that being said, my husband and I felt quite uncomfortable here and not from the beds (those were just fine). The hotel managers treated the other employees like they were far beneath them, which for me was uncomfortable. Thailand is called "the land of smiles," but this place sucks it out of all of their locals. Maybe the hotel encourages this so that the employees are just part of the background, but it is not my preference. If you like feeling superior and as though you have an abundance of wealth (whether you truly do or you are well-enough off that you can stay at Santhiya and definitely have more money than the locals), then this place is for you. We did not appreciate the amount of discouragement the hotel displayed throughout the grounds to not leave the hotel either. I HIGHLY encourage you to leave the hotel and explore the island. I actually encourage staying somewhere else besides Santhiya. We did all of our excursions for about 400 Thai Baht a person less at Koh Yao Yai Village. Saphon was awesome there. Extremely friendly and personable and all of the other employees at Koh Yao Yai Village carried the same attitude and hop in their step as he did. We also recommend renting a moped from the local gentleman on the corner of the T-intersection when turning right out of the Santhiya grounds. He was very trusting a polite. The locals keep their gas in litre bottles. This too was fine and not an issue. They fill up the tank for your. If you feel fine with this, exchange your money outside of Santhiya. It was safe and they do an exact or almost exact exchange. No issues (at least for us). Also, EAT outside of Santhiya (minus the included breakfast, which was DELICIOUS!). My husband and I ate at ZeaZea which is about 300ms down the road from the moped guy. We went every night. Everything is cooked fresh and the family running it are amazing. Actually, everyone around the island outside of Santhiya is sensational. This again, made me wonder what is wrong with Santhiya. AND if you do, COVER UP!!! Where you are from only matters when you are representing your culture and if you wanted to represent it as rude, selfish, careless and domineering, then wear your bikinis, tanks tops and other revealing clothing. Koh Yao Yai is a primarily Muslim island. They are casual, extraordinarily friendly and easy going, so they won't tell you to cover up. However, if you respect them and their homeland, cover up. I hope this review helps. Once more: if you want a place that makes you feel better than others, go here. If you want to enjoy your vacation without feeling like you are flaunting your wealth (because if you are able to travel here, you are definitely wealthier than the people working at Santhiya), go here. The only plus I see with Santhiya, besides its beautiful woodwork is that it is giving the employees a job to work.
