"A 5 star trip? I wonder."
A "one time - never to return escapade" On December 1 I decided to bring my family of 5 adults and two children to said Resort - booking to go there only via reading on the internet - and some little input from my travel agent (who seem to know less than me about the Resort.) Here are my brief comments Arrival by air sea and land from Singpore seem exciting enough for the kids but so-so for oldies like me (approaching 86 year old man). We arrived just past mid day and checked in and were told room will not be ready till 2 p.m. We hung around till 2.35 when we were told our unit was ready. Shuttle: We were shuttled up the side of the hill which was absolutely pretty - as advertised in some write up. I had opted for the biggest possible unit - which had 4 bedrooms and indeed peerched high above other units.....little did we know that there are disadvantages. Villas were served with shuttle cars marked 1....other cars marked 2 and 3 served only the hotels at lower levels. This resulted in my family and I having to wait mighty long time each time we wished to be shuttled to the dining rooms or beach. It would seem that paying mighty more dollars have its disadvantages. The "mini cars" - whilst serving a purpose are by no means safe as the tracks up the hillside are a story of twists and turns...and dangers The Villa (we had the only four bedroom villa) was excellent - except for ants galore. Dont bother leaving a bottle of wine for incoming guest...unless a decent one. F&B: This was the disappointment of the year. First evening we opted for room service - the food came one hour later but we tolerated; the second evening we made the huge error of opting to go for fine dining at the upmarket dining room.....romantically dark and under-served by only one waitress. Again, one hour after order was taken no food arrived and I had to put this unhappiness strongly across to the "chief". Food eventually came romantically decorated in some sort of circular dish - sparse. I was so horrifed I cannot this moment recall what we ordered but I know the bill as not a small one. Never to return. It is interesting to note next evening that guests at this Villa were making a bee line for the food outlet next door (small dark hotel but excellent food). We followed suit - and this turned out to be the best decision of our ten day trip. Great foods. Allow me to ponder - why oh why are the prawns we had at your restaurant so poorly tired and unfresh whist those at the next door restaurant were so jumpy fresh that we had multiple orders of them. Checking out - on the last day I presented myself at the check-in counter to announce that we had left the room; I casually asked the petite girl what my travel agent paid for the four bedroom I stay over last 10 days. She worked at the computer, pondered a while, and to my surprise she decided to stand upto attend to an incoming European family. she performed the ritual of guiding them to their seats, ensuring them tea and continued to sign them in - leaving me waiting at her desk - after ten mintes of negligence i walked out and was met by the "man in green" - a perfect gentleman who looked after the welfare of the breakfast room very professionally. He saw my unhappines and promptly got some higher up to speak to me - by which time I was only interested to get my family on to the motor boat - and started the very long road home....never to return again. Summarily: I cannot ever return nor honestly recommend my friends/enemies or my family to ever return. It was an expensive experience in the cliffs.
"Perfect honeymoon remote Resort"
Wow. We had intended to splurge for the first few days of our honeymoon, but Santhiya Resort exceeded our expectations. We stayed at the oceanfront villa, and as Lux (resort concierge) walked us through it for the first time, my wife and I couldn't stop laughing and smiling of how amazed we were...the villa was just too good to be true. The view was breathtaking. The furnishings and details left nothing to be desired. Despite being on a resort, with other villas all around, there was an amazing amount of privacy, even out on our balcony. The resort itself was very well run, with tons to do. It was very family friendly. The breakfast buffets were superb. The rest of the food was good, but very overpriced and the flavors of the Thai food seemed toned-down from what you find elsewhere in Thailand. The only downside is that you have to wait for a shuttle to move around and to go from your room to the pool, beach or restaurants. The whole resort is in a mountain so it's very hilly. Other than that its a great thai traditional place to stay.
"A crazy mix between fantastic and poor!"
The setting of the hotel is incredible. You arrive by boat, you don't see your luggage until you are in your room and the view from the balcony is so beautiful it is unreal. The room is spacious, well appointed, clean and the bed is huge and comfortable. However, during booking in you are given immediate information overload, having just finished a journey by plane, minibus and boat, and you are pressured into making a quick decision about two for one offers at their spa. before we had left the office we had had our room changed without explanation as to why. The change was from low to high, which was not good news and the resort is massive and the only way to get round is via their 'buses.' These are basically pick-up trucks with wooden benches, which are covered by ornately carved screens. They travel up and down at regular intervals but are not comfortable and not five star. The resort has two beautiful pools, one up the hill and one at the bottom. The large one at the bottom has a waterfall feature and loungers in the shallows, shaped like boats. The loungers around the pool usually offer the opportunity for shade or sun. There are waiting staff around who can bring drinks and snacks, although you sometimes have to find them. The infinity pool has amazing views across the sea and is adjacent to one of the restaurants and bars. It is smaller and you have to be early to get one of the few loungers right by the pool. The food on offer is a mix between buffet and A la carte and varies on quality and choice. We had some lovely meals and a couple of disappointing ones. Some of the portion sizes seemed small but on other occasions they were very generous. There are always selections of Thai or Western dishes. We had paid for full board, which on reflection was probably a poor idea. The menu is somewhat reduced and although breakfast comes with as much tea and coffee as you like, lunch and dinner do not and even water has to be paid for. This seems a little petty when they furnish your room with plentiful amounts of bottled water, we were only caught once. It also means that you miss the opportunity to try the islands independent restaurants. We didn't find the price of beer and spirits too silly for an expensive hotel, although they were dear compared to local bars, but wine is something else; £11 for a glass of plonk and £14 for a glass of Italian Merlot is on a par with Royal Caribbean Cruises. The staff do not seem happy; we witnessed a couple of arguments between waiting staff. At time they are great but sometimes they are difficult to attract and you end up going to find someone. This is a little annoying at an expensive establishment. The result is a mixed bag. We enjoyed the stay but are unlikely to return.
"Not friendly to the baby guest"
With our 1 year old baby we stayed in these hotel for 2 nights. They gave us a room ( room number 3102 ) in the bottom of the building which need to climb hundred stairs up and down. This is very inconvenient especially when we need to carry the baby stroller and held the baby on the other hand, when it was raining, the slippery stairs was really dangerous when you walk with baby on hand. There are many rooms that they can arrange for us for better access. And there is no any public place to change the diaper for baby. This should be the most basic facility in a good hotel. Hope you can improve.
Great property, villa's are spectacular and food is very good. Would recommend it highly, just a disappointed stay due to the construction going on next to our villa.. Not what we were looking for to relax quietly !!!
