Over Ras Kutani

A much delayed review of one of our stays on this last trip. With 4-5 stops on our trip, the luxury of stepping onto a plane five minutes after landing at Dar Es Salaam domestic terminal (still a shack, but from 2018 will be a much closed and moved to the current international terminal, so I'm sure will slow things down!) was all part of the "leave it to us, everything's taken care of' vibe. 20 mins flying time and you're on the private landing strip, bags packed and into a car.. I won't spoil the surprise, but again, it's all part of the experience..!! We stayed for 5 nights in both tree-top suites- enormous, luxuriously ventilated by the breeze, so no need for air con, with the sounds of distant waves and monkey calls. Certainly not for the unfit, this is a 30/40 step climb, and it's steep sand/stone, but was so worth it.. sleeping in these enormous beds was sheer bliss, and even though mosquito nets were provided, I didn't see many during our time there. Talk at meal times from regular visitors, (which there seemed to be a few!) was that there's been a big improvement in the food and wine since Baas and Susanna took over the management. Lots of variety every night, with healthy portions, well presented, and always with great Tanzanian smiles! Highly recommended.
A wonderfully relaxing couple of days where nothing was too much trouble. Fantastic staff, excellent seafood, forest and beach walks and the meanest fresh lime Margherita served by John this side of Mexico! Thanks to Baas and Susanna and your discreet staff for a great stay.
Fantastic staff, wonderful food, relaxing vibe, lovely views, super accommodation. Every need was met - managers and staff are just brilliant. Just an hour and half's drive from Dar es Salaam. Highly recommended.
"A place for relaxation"
I had a few nights here after a week of game drives, just seeking some gentle relaxation prior to flying home. It is a lovely setting on an attractive beach where you can watch the comings and goings of both tides and people. Staff were first class, and the food was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. One morning when I commented that there was no passion fruit on the breakfast buffet the waiter quickly disappeared and returned with two passion fruits prepared for me. I had one of the suites, which I enjoyed as it had good views and a decent sized plunge pool. The bed was huge, but comfortable, and there was a handy fan for hot nights. It might have been nice to have a sunshade over the sunloungers, although one could of course always move into the chairs in the shade. It's worth walking to the local village, which gives you a good idea of what life can be like here. I didn't see much on the lagoon walk, although I think I was just unlucky. And of course there is plenty of beach to walk along. Although in some ways it was a bit of an anti-climax after being in the bush, this is certainly a place to recharge your batteries and enjoy the friendliness of all the staff. They really do make the place. (And Abu is my new best friend since he said he thought I was only 50...)
"Beach Beach Beach"
I was here 2 nights in February. I stayed one night in the 2 bedroom hilltop suite and 1 night in a "regular" room (nbr 5). The hilltop suite is massive and has a wonderful ocean view. 2 separate rooms with bath and a central outdoor living space. The steps can be daunting for anyone challenged but once up there it's wonderful. I loved room 5 just as much. Basically the same room as the suite but just on ground level with a lagoon and ocean view. 2 hammocks on deck and chairs/etc.. I could stay all day. There is wifi at the pool and it does reach into room 5 which is next to the pool. The food was lovely and the view cannot be beat anywhere on the property. No one is on the beach except hotel guests and an occasional person walking by. You don't have to wear shoes if you don't want to as all the path's are sand. There is a resident tortoise on property also. I loved this place. We took the 10min flight from the airport and drove back to Dar. It was on a sunday and was about 1.5hrs but have heard it could be 2x that. It was nice to see the towns/countryside. Road wasn't too bad for the most part.
