Over Ras Kutani

"A place for relaxation"
I had a few nights here after a week of game drives, just seeking some gentle relaxation prior to flying home. It is a lovely setting on an attractive beach where you can watch the comings and goings of both tides and people. Staff were first class, and the food was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. One morning when I commented that there was no passion fruit on the breakfast buffet the waiter quickly disappeared and returned with two passion fruits prepared for me. I had one of the suites, which I enjoyed as it had good views and a decent sized plunge pool. The bed was huge, but comfortable, and there was a handy fan for hot nights. It might have been nice to have a sunshade over the sunloungers, although one could of course always move into the chairs in the shade. It's worth walking to the local village, which gives you a good idea of what life can be like here. I didn't see much on the lagoon walk, although I think I was just unlucky. And of course there is plenty of beach to walk along. Although in some ways it was a bit of an anti-climax after being in the bush, this is certainly a place to recharge your batteries and enjoy the friendliness of all the staff. They really do make the place. (And Abu is my new best friend since he said he thought I was only 50...)
"Beach Beach Beach"
I was here 2 nights in February. I stayed one night in the 2 bedroom hilltop suite and 1 night in a "regular" room (nbr 5). The hilltop suite is massive and has a wonderful ocean view. 2 separate rooms with bath and a central outdoor living space. The steps can be daunting for anyone challenged but once up there it's wonderful. I loved room 5 just as much. Basically the same room as the suite but just on ground level with a lagoon and ocean view. 2 hammocks on deck and chairs/etc.. I could stay all day. There is wifi at the pool and it does reach into room 5 which is next to the pool. The food was lovely and the view cannot be beat anywhere on the property. No one is on the beach except hotel guests and an occasional person walking by. You don't have to wear shoes if you don't want to as all the path's are sand. There is a resident tortoise on property also. I loved this place. We took the 10min flight from the airport and drove back to Dar. It was on a sunday and was about 1.5hrs but have heard it could be 2x that. It was nice to see the towns/countryside. Road wasn't too bad for the most part.
"This is how to chillax !"
On arrival at the hotel's airstrip and were very pleasantly surprised to be rowed across the lagoon to be met on the jetty by the manager Kaliman. It was Valentine's Day and we were introduced to the other guests with cocktails and dinner on the beach, under the most perfect Southern Hemisphere starlit sky, could it get any better? Our cottage was amazing with the most fantastic views over the lagoon to the beach and the Indian Ocean, beautiful shower and bathroom facilities and a huge bed which was so comfortable. We even had two different species of monkeys to keep us entertained as we lazed on the porch! After a leisurely breakfast we lazed our mornings away on the beach, snorkelling and exploring the wreck a few hundred metres along the beach. The beach Banda boys were very attentive whether we needed shade providing or we'd raised our blue flag and needed a drink. The waiting and bar staff were exceptional and the chefs did a great job whether providing a glorious seafood platter, a tasty barbecue or beautiful deserts. We both had massages from Ayesha which were very much appreciated. Co-manager Emille kindly arranged that we could keep our cottage until 6pm on our last day as we were being transferred to the airport then, for which we were very grateful. What a perfect way to recharge the batteries after a week of early morning game drives, we would definitely recommend you to our friends and thank you for giving us such a wonderful time.
"Very comfortable 3 night stay. Arriving in a rowing boat across the lagoon was fun!"
This was the most "hotel" like place we stayed on our trip along the coast and islands of Tanzania and was very comfortable not least because we were upgraded, very kindly, to Hill House 1. It sounds very ungrateful because the "room" - large and outside spacious was very luxurious with glorious views but goodness its a trek up lots [72 I think] of very steep steps! not for the unfit or faint hearted. the food was generally very good though the breakfast was a bit disappointing as expected a bit more choice of fruit on the buffet, croissants were not at all good - ask for honey as wasn't visible and is very good indeed. They ran out of orange juice one day as they just hadn't made enough.Service could be a bit hit and miss. They have a great policy though of moving you around the property for dinner so one night we had dinner on our own by the pool [wonderfully sweet lobster - perfect] and another on the beach with our feet in the sand and candlelight -a bit windy but still a lovely idea and much appreciated. There was a superb curry buffet one night.Wine here is good and the Serengeti Shiraz definitely worth trying as very nice. There is quite a bit of monkey activity around and bush babies but the best was the 3ft long monitor lizard near the beach hut. The massage was not, in my view, very professional. No questions on health, areas to be careful of, didn't ask about pressure required nor told about oil used. Ended by a very brusque "finished". No relaxing tea afterwards. She just left the room and that was it. Whilst the massage itself was ok the whole experience was not at all good and I have had massages in many places all over the world. I would have expected much much better from a place like Ras Kutani. It is an area that should be addressed. However, it didn't detract from a very nice stay here. Our thanks to Peter and his wife for being such good hosts.
"Relaxing stay "
Ras Kutani is simply stunning. From arrival in a rowing boat watching monkeys playing to leaving we felt we had found paradise. Our room - suite one was at the top of the hill. We had stunning views, the most enormous bed and a dip pool. Service was friendly, food plentiful and our lobster dinner on our last evening was perfect. The lagoon walk is wonderful, the beach is immense, pristine and deserted. The rock pools at low tide so wonderful. This is such a relaxing place and we stayed here for 4 nights before going on to Siwandu and then yo Mafia Island
