Umhlanga is een prettige badplaats met een breed zandstrand dat uitnodigt voor een fijne strandwandeling. Het Holiday Inn Express biedt ruime en moderne kamers, voorzien van gemakken als een televisie, koffie- en theezetfaciliteiten en kluisje. Een fijne bijkomstigheid van het hotel is dat het beschikt over een zwembad. 's Avonds kunt u in het Steak House op de begane grond terecht voor een lekker hapje eten en voor een drankje duikt u gewoon de Great Room Bar in. Daarnaast vindt u in de omgeving van het hotel voldoende restaurants en cafés.

Durban is met zijn brede witte stranden aan de warme Indische Oceaan een populair vakantieoord tijdens een reis door Zuid-Afrika. De zon schijnt hier 300 dagen per jaar. De 6 kilometer lange Golden Mile is zeer in trek bij strandliefhebbers en zwemmers en biedt veel mogelijkheden en vertier zoals bars en restaurants.

"A mixed bag of value for money but with some rough edges"

This hotel has a good location close to the Gateway mall but too far from the ocean to be able to hear it, although you can see it from a partial sea view room (which has half a window). Other high points were the proximity to the sights in Durban like Ushaka marine world among others, which were an easy 20-30 mins drive from the hotel (depending on traffic at the time of the day). The staff was very helpful and assisted us with booking sightseeing tours even though the hotel doesn't have a concierge desk. The breakfast buffet had a large selection of hot and cold options with the nicest touch for me, being the nice take away cups for tea or coffee. The dinning area was large and nicely decorated although there was a long line of guests waiting for breakfast by about 8:30am each morning. One morning, we had to skip the breakfast line and eat at the mall because the line was too long. Although the rooms have no minibar or fridges, the front desk stored our son's milk in their fridge during our stay, which was quite helpful. The downsides include; rooms that could use some thorough cleaning as the carpet didn't look very clean especially around the corners of the room (noticed this feedback on other posts on Trip advisor prior to our visit, but hoped it would have been addressed, but it was still an issue). The other major downside was the long line at the reception desk at check in. I could see the staff was trying to be attentive the guest right in front of them, but it was painful for guests waiting in line with no acknowledgment of the delay. The same cracked water glass showed up in our bathroom for 3 days in a row after the cleaning staff had completed their daily cleaning. It was obvious that although the sheets were changed daily (we'd set up a system to check once we had doubts about overall cleanliness), the rest of the room particularly items on the table and bathroom counter were not thoroughly cleaned. We also had a light bulb that was fixed three different times but it still did not work properly by the time we left. Overall, I think although this hotel offers good value for money, I would like to try a different hotel on my next trip to Durban.


We arrived on 1 January 2017 at 14:00, our room was not ready until 15:00. We sat waiting with a tired and miserable baby after a 7 hour drive. The room was dirty. The carpets was not vacuumed. The dirty teaspoons from the previous visitors were still in the tray in the room. The sleeper couch had bedding on for some reason. After this was all sorted out we were only settled in our room at about 16:00. Two hours wasted of our day. We requested a sea facing room and was accommodated for the following day. What a disaster. We vacated our room at about 09:00 and stored all our luggage in the meeting room. We eventually only got another room at about 14:30 after causing a scene. We have taken photos of the dirt in the first room we were booked in. We wanted to book additional nights but decided against it. This was the 2 most stressful days of holiday ever. One goes on holiday to relax not to be totally stressed out. I will not recommend this establishment to anyone. Sent a complaint to the Marketing Department in Cape Town. We were told that the General Manager, Bronwyn McCleod will contact us. To our surprise all we received was a "We are sorry" note pushed under our room door. Clearly they don't care about their customers.

"Comfortable neat "

A very comfortable location. The rooms are clean. The staff are both friendly and helpful. Gateway mall is within 3 min walk if traffic is crazy.breakfast was efficient though not a large variety for continental but sufficient to get you through the morning. Noerraan kathree

"Lovely rooms but staff spoilt it! "

I stayed with my husband for two nights in December 2016, we had booked 3 months in advance and requested a sea facing room only to be told this would not be possible when we arrived. The lady at reception who received us, was very unpleasant and unfriendly and this spoilt how excited we felt to check-in! We were at least very pleased with our clean and well kept room. In the morning, we were required to stand in a line for the included breakfast as if in a bus station! The breakfast was below average , I think I must've eaten for about R30 as nothing seemed appealing ( the scrambled eggs were very milky and watery and I could not eat anything else after tasting this) , we skipped breakfast the next day and had to take a taxi to have breakfast elsewhere as we were not in the mood for below average food and being rushed(perhaps this is what they mean by the 'express' in holiday inn express and maybe should not expect more, just thought I'd mention it as this is something a lot of people look forward to). We will unfortunately not be returning here as the overall staff attitude is unacceptable!

"excellent homely feel, location and breakfast"

hotel is conveniently located, close to beach. outside of hotel is clean, tidy and attractive. inside is clean and some renovation / maintenance is visible. this is not inconvenient and managed well to not disturb guests. general manager is friendly and makes one feel at home, appreciated and very welcome. she is even available to greet guests personally. reception personnel is friendly, efficient and helpful. rooms are clean and housekeeping delivers good service. breakfast is of excellent quality, well prepared varied; more than can be expected. restaurant manager is extremely capable of managing the restaurant; including food and personnel. she is friendly and take time to greet guests and takes care of any requests by guests; all this while still managing the restaurant. rest of amenities like pool, business center etc. can be enjoyed and utilized. in short; excellent stay, because all personnel (and general manager) strive to make your stay pleasant and a wonderful experience.
