"Glad we didn’t check-out immediately upon arrival"
Pandemonium greeted us when we arrived - a very loud and gregarious function was in full swing downstairs - a gale-force wind blowing in from the sea-fronting terrace through reception and venting out of the front door - and a ‘small and over-furnished back bedroom’ was allocated. We were tempted to leave - but were promised things would quieten by 17:00. Although our bedroom didn’t improve (but it was kept very clean) the hotel quietened as promised and we did enjoy our 2-night stay. Breakfasts were particularly good - all hot-food cooked to order; and the dinners were to a good standard (as were the drinks/cocktails). The staff were all very pleasant, friendly and obliging; nothing was a ‘problem’. The beach-front location is superb - directly accessing the beach. Indeed, the beach is probably the key attraction at Salt Rock. Canelands building is actually 2 semi-detached ‘knocked into 1’ - which is why the ‘back bedrooms’ are so small and restricted - overlooking the car park and benefiting from the kitchen exhaust fumes. I would only consider a return visit if a seafront room was offered; if all the rooms were to these standards I would strongly recommend.
"Fabulous place with amazing view !"
Our room was enormous, overlooking the ocean with a huge veranda and cane armchairs, table and loungers outside, inside a king-size+ bed with cool cotton linen, two comfy armchairs, bedside tables, lamps etc., and floor-to-ceiling windows giving 180degree views ! A separate dressing room had a wall of wardrobes, drawers, shelves, safe, large dressing table and stool with mirror and a fridge. The service both at reception and in the dining room was efficient and courteous and the food was very good. The Spa was excellent and prices very reasonable. We would most certainly return to this hotel.
We stayed in this hotel as an overnight stop before flying to Port Elizabeth on our South Africa tour. The hotel has a very small car park (which is not helped by people parking extremely badly). There doesn't appear to be a Reception Desk - just a table near the entrance. The room was quite small, but OK. We decided to have dinner in the hotel. The chef (who told us he had just started) came over to our table to ask what we wanted to eat. When we asked for a menu, he said that there is a menu, but that he probably wouldn't be cooking the items included - some use having a menu! Surely it's not beyond the wit of man to write a list of what he would actually cook. As it happened, the food was reasonably good. Breakfast was a disaster! We asked what time it was served when we arrived at the hotel. We were told from 6:00am - which was good because we were being collected at 7:30am to be taken to the airport. When we went for breakfast at 6:45, we were told that the restaurant didn't open until 7:00. We explained that we were in a rush and must have breakfast served quickly. I ordered eggs benedict, and was asked how I wanted my eggs. I said "soft" and was then asked "poached or fried?". Given that eggs benedict is supposed to be poached eggs, I thought this was odd, but told them I wanted poached eggs. It was around 7:20 before the food actually arrived (despite our request for quick service). And, despite my request for poached eggs in the eggs benedict, the eggs were fried! So, breakfast was eaten at breakneck speed and we then went to check out. The absence of a reception desk meant that we had to shout into an office to get someone to check us out. Finally, on a safety note, it is not easy to spot where the plate glass windows are between the hotel and its terrace. Consequently - on separate occasions - both my wife and I walked into the glass. My glasses were severely bent as a result. This hotel needs to get its act together.
"Amazing and much needed break!"
I spent 3 nights from the 2nd to the 5th of October and it was the best break away that I have had in quite a while. Walking in to the restaurant and looking out onto the deck and the ocean beyond was such a great experience and what an amazing view. It was a pity that the pool was being renovated and took a while to fill up, but at least the beach is a few steps down from the garden. The staff were friendly and the service was amazing. A special thanks to Christine and Wendy for making my stay such an enjoyable experience. I will definitely be coming back here again for another break! My only recommendation is that a rain shower head be installed, so that combined with the sound of the waves crashing on the beach, will make an already amazing experience even more so.
Situated right at the beach we spend two days there and it was the absolute highlight of our two-week KZN experience: we had the top suite and with the stunning view towards the seaside we could see dolphins and wales from our beds. Breakfast and dinner are of the highest standard as you would expect. Staff is very professional and friendly. Try their spa as well! What a way to enjoy a special celebration or holiday!
