"Great location, generally good service and food"
We were booked here as the last leg in a 3 week tour for a couple of nights before flying home. Safe to say this stay wasn't a highlight but Canelands had some tough competition. This boutique hotel superbly situated just above the beach which is an excellent place for a morning walk before breakfast. We had been booked the last available room and the staff apologised about the integral bathroom which is not much use unless sole occupancy. They offered to move us to another room for the following night which we took up. Staff efficiently sorted out our boarding passes for return flight and were generally helpful regarding the shopping etc we needed to do. Also provided a later check out since our's was an evening flight. We didn't notice the systemic management issues reported by others on this site. The chef knows what he is doing. Lunch contains some light meals and we ate a prawn seafood salad with spicy dressing that was superb. On the Sunday we ate a late lunch in Ballito so only needed a small meal in the evening. However the restaurant at Canelands was inflexible on this and wouldn't offer us any light lunch dishes in the evening. We had to settle for coffee and dessert. Breakfasts were good and worth the wait for the cooked items. Staff were very slow to come forward with coffee refills.
Canelands offers stunning sea views and a beautiful ocean edge pool. The restaurants food is well presented and tasty, but very pricey if you are not from overseas. The suites are neat but not very big compared to other honeymoon suites we stayed in during our trip. They did provide a nice welcome to the room with a bottle of wine and rose petals in the floor. Unfortunately The service at Canelands however leaves a lot to be desired after that. The mini bar, is actually just an empty fridge, that according to the staff is never stocked. the tea and coffee and station isn't up kept well. Turn down was forgotten about on our 2nd night. The bath in our suite was lovely and big and easily fits 2 people, but it wasn't cleaned by room service and while a hairdryer is supplied there are no 2 pin sockets in the room. During my mornings at the pool i had to go looking for staff to get some coffee. Continental Breakfast and a choice of hot breakfast is included which was good but the continental was alil limited in comparison to even a City Lodge hotel. There is a lot to do nearby, we tried out the zipline tour which was fun and very well run. However this was after saying quad biking in the Canelands info book in our room, only to find out that it hasn't operated for the last 3 years. All in all a beautiful place to stay, with great views, however a bit pricey per night, and the service needs attention.
"MAYHEM and CHAOS"
Canelands Beach Club and Spa is optimally located to allow guests with a sea view room an uninterrupted view of the Indian Ocean and very pleasant walks or runs along an unspoilt beach. Canelands’ restaurant (“Two Shrimpsâ€) is phenomenal, offering a wide-ranging and excellent menu in a celebratory ambience. But, sadly, the room-services division is run in an appalling manner by a team of severely under-skilled staff managed by a really incompetent and arrogant hotel manager who is wholly unsuited to the role. If you read the other guest comments on this site, you will note how Canelands Beach Club and Spa’s manager attempts to excuse the frequent service and accommodation complaints with promises of refurbishment and more attention to detail but nothing has improved in years under her leadership: the reception desk is a nightmare and arrival and check-in is a chaotic affair. Firstly, a new arrival is ignored, then a charge is demanded for the complimentary arrival drink and, finally, when the receptionist eventually understands that you are, in fact, checking in, he barks instructions at you as if you are checking into prison. After realising that the television system does not work (every third channel on the in-room set connects to same one of four available channels), the curtains do not draw completely (room-service could not even fix these), no bath-soap is provided (as the hotel manager ‘does not know what to do with the left-over soap’ (her words)) and having to listen to loud unpleasant music wafting up from the dining room all afternoon, one realises that the hotel manager is in the habit of disappearing for hours on end, leaving her under-skilled staff to fend for themselves. One of the waiters admitted that she often leaves the hotel unattended for lengthy periods and the receptionist told me – at about 3pm – that she had gone home for the day and would attend to my complaints the next morning. As it turned out, I managed to get her to return in an attempt to get her to take charge but she waffled so uncontrollably and made so many excuses instead of actually addressing the problems that it turned out to be a sheer waste of time having her there at all. She left again as soon as she could before anything was fixed. It is obvious that there is a serious lack of leadership at Canelands and, while no-one has taken a clipboard walkabout to see what is defective throughout the hotel in years, the staff are allowed to muddle along without leadership and control, resulting in defective television systems, unkempt bedrooms and a vague – but dismal – attempt to provide a four-star level of service. Visit Canelands for the view and the access to the beach as well as the restaurant but do not expect a glitch-free room or staff complement that is on the ball or an ever-present hotel manager who is in firm control. She is too busy defending her queendom to actually pay attention to guests’ needs.
"Highlight at the end of our SA Trip"
After very imprssive Safari trips, we stayed for 3 nights to relax a liitle bit at dolphin coast. The staff in the hotel and rstaurant is extremely nice, the view including dolphin sights from the balcon is great. On top, the restaurant cooks on high level. Hearing, that we are vegetarians, the organized three different meal courses every evening, which were reaching star level. Thank you very much for that outstanding service
"A wonderful wedding"
We attended a wedding, which despite the rain was an excellent day. The original plan was for the wedding to take place on the beach but due to dreadful weather this had to be cancelled. By the time we arrived an alternative plan had been made by the hotel and we were still able to enjoy a wonderful occasion seeing our friends get married. The meal was excellent, creative and tasty.
