Over Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge

Our favorite

"Fantastic Location - Great Park - but missing something"

My wife and I had three nights at Rhino Ridge, which is situated high on a hill in a national park. The lodge itself is only a couple of years old and looks amazing. the views from the deck are stunning, particulalry when the sun rises and sets. The safari droves are well organised and our guide Theo was very good. We saw three of the Big 5, as the cats were not about. Too cold at this time of year. Drives tended to follow the same route every day which was a bit disappointing but given the park is 93,000square kilometers, we were never going to see it all in three days. Villas are very spacious and sited in such away that you have an uninterrupted view of the surroundings. Given that game drives are done with the intention of seeing animals, we did not think that it was an appropriate place to bring infants under the age of two who, when they scream tend to frighten the animals off. Age restrictions should be applied. Whilst the vilas look great I dropped something on the floor and when I bent down to pick it up the level of dirt and dust under the furnitire was excessive. It was clear that the housekeeping did not extend to brushing or cleaning under the furniture. Overall we had an great time, staff were very friendly and could not do enough for us. We were escorted between the main building and our villas during the hours of darkness, as although the fences would keep out the elephants, smaller animals were able to roam free, which is the way it should be. Paths to the villas are steep and gravel and would not be suitable to wheelchair users. Undecided as to whether or not we would go back.

"We had a blast!!"

How amazing this stay was, from day one! I went with my older brother and his best friend, it was their first game reserve experience ever! We spent 2 nights there and we had a very pleasant stay! We will just recommend future guests to not follow their GPS (what the Rhino Ridge team will tell you as well) as we got lost the first day on our way to the lodge and we arrived in a village, not very practicable, muddy road. Trust the road signage as it will be your best shot to get to the Nyalazi Gate! The lodge itself is breathtaking, beautiful rooms with cheminée, super clean, super nice deck view and we really enjoyed the opened bathrooms (my favorite)! The overall experience was great! Light breakfast/snacks before the morning game drives, plus snacks during your game drive at a picnic area, followed by a proper large breakfast on return. They don't have lunch properly speaking, but they do have the high tea option just before the afternoon game drive, and dinner of course, an a la carte menu with a choice of 2 starters, main courses and dessert. We didn't see lions and the super rare leopard, but we managed to see a lot of animals. Bonus, we had a group of girafes close by the lodge entrance which was quite awesome! On our first morning game drive with Theo, we had a group of elephants blocking the road, young adults playing with each others, then all the family was crossing the road in front of us, led by the protective mother, keeping an eye on both our truck and the little ones, they were sooo closed to us, very impressive!! At the lodge, from the deck view we spotted some impalas and kudus during the days and at night we heard hyenas laughing not far from our rooms, and then lions fighting the morning after, so cool! The staff was mind-blowing, very professional, willing to help for anything to make our stay pleasant, we can just be thankful for such hospitality! Special thanks to our favorites Wonderboy, Theo and Queen. We really enjoyed everything about it! Absolutely incredible!

"Modern facilities in a rather run down park"

Firstly the facility: It is based on a hill top with outstanding views. The accommodation is large and modern, including the spacious bathroom. The unit could do with better cleaning. Beware holes in the linen and pre-used slippers (ew!) which should not occur in a resort which markets itself as upmarket. The communal areas (restaurant, bar, spa, pool) are airy and also provide views forever. Food is provided three times a day and is intermittently good. Beverages are (surprisingly) cheap. Staff need better training. Except for the Spa manager who seemed to be the only person who took initiative, management was ineffective and while asking about your well being, seemed to be completely disengaged. Secondly the park: As with most Government owned parks, it is rather run down. Signage is awful. Even the animals seemed to have given up. Limited numbers of animals were seen however. The guide was good. Depeneding on which gate to teh park one uses, beware of random cattle and goats on the roads to the park. Rather travel during the day. Further uncontrolled human developments on either side of the park will probably ruin the long term desirability of the park.

"Wonderful place !"

We spent three days in this nice and wonderful place during July. Hotel and rooms are really nice. Perfect team attentive with us all the time, smiles and kindness were always present. They provided us pretty meals & fine wines in the warmhearted ambience of the evening dinner: Succulent ! Animals were at the meeting during our trips into the wild nature. Stunning experience with skilled tracker, you feel voiceless when facing elephants, rhinos or buffalos ! Thank you to all the team for this magical stay ! Gaetan & Anaïs.

"5 star lodge in 4 star park"

The lodge itself is fantastic, beautiful rooms, although beware that the bathrooms are open plan onto the bedroom if you are sharing with anyone you don't know quite so well!! They have a sensible set up of light breakfast/snacks before morning game drive, followed by proper large breakfast at 9.30/10am on return, there is then no lunch as such but what they call high tea which is in effect a late lunch at 2.30pm before the 3.30pm afternoon game drive with dinner served 7-9pm and it is an a la carte menu with a choice of 2 starters and main courses. The disappointment of our stay here was the park itself. It was predominantly tarmac roads and this gave it a very much safari park feel. There was no option to go off road, which actually would have been difficult anyway due to the density of the vegetation but it did make for a less exciting experience and very much meant you had to wait for the animals to come to you. That said our driver Simo was great, very informative and knowledgeable and our 13 year old sat in the front with him on game drives and felt she learnt so much from him it made her holiday. We were also able to go on a walking safari with Nunu, this was one of the highlights of the holiday for all of us, getting so close to rhinos and giraffe on foot was special plus all the other smaller things that they were able to show us. A great place but be aware of the experience you are getting, it is not the tracking off road excitement of some parks but you do get rhinos a plenty, some stunning scenery and a great lodge.
