"Just Wow"

Safari: It depends a lot on which guide you have. The first Safari we did, I can't even remember the guide's name was really bad. Imagine we were exited to see all the animals and all but the guide didn't explain a thing, went super fast and just didn't care. ON THE OTHER SIDE, Eugene (guide with whom we luckily did all the rest of the safaris) was another story. He is super passionate of what he does and genuily wants you to have a good time and learn. He is not in a rush and takes the time to answer all your questions. Ask for him!! Food: Its ok. The best they have is breakfast and the "dinner at the bush" Rooms and Housekeeping: Rooms have plenty of space and clean. Tennis court: bad organised. We wanted to play but you can't book, you just have to be lucky to go and the court to be free. All in all, the safari that is the main attraction is AMAZING only if you di it with people like EUGENE.

"A weekend rescued only by the actions of one "Junior" guide."

I stayed this weekend as a guest of South African friends. We went out on the Saturday morning drive. The guide was friendly enough but we got the impression that he was focused on just getting us to see lions and the other "Big 4". The journey was rushed and he ignored other passengers request to stop to investigate sightings. We also booked the afternoon drive and checked with the desk staff. "What time is the afternoon drive?". "Five thirty" was the reply. We duly turned up in good time and was told bluntly by the head guide - Jarod - that we must have misheard because it left at 4.30. We are a team of professionals. Listening to information is what we do all day long. For two of us to be accussed of "mishearing" something that simple was insulting. But anyway he stuck to his argument until one of our party demanded to see the Front Desk Manager. Jarod continued to argue that he was the highest authority for guiding. We proposed a number of solutions which were all seemingly "impossible". Then finally they suggested we could be taken out by Amy. Amy is a junior guide and had only been with them for 3 days. It would be her first game drive. We said yes and then spent the best couple of hours we could imagine. Officially, Amy is not allowed to take guests out until October. This is nuts. This young lady was the most knowledgeable, enthusiastic and friendly person we met during the whole stay. She is an encylopedia of fascinating and fun facts about all we encountered (trees, dung beetles, flowers and of course the animals). She should be given responsibilities sooner or teach the other guides how to make the customer experience more fulfilling. The next morning we joined the party led by Lizzie. I thought we were in a race. We spent a lot of the time careering around to see two lions laying down in long grass, doing nothing. I get the feeling that the experienced guides need to show people lions. Maybe the tips are better then? The rest of the staff were great, but the bar shut at 10.30 on a Friday night and we squeezed them to serve us at 10.45pm on a Saturday night. The staff have to catch the last bus home. Really? The management should understand that the bar needs to stay open. Surely that where money is made with a minimum of effort? I felt sorry for my hosts, they went to a lot of cost to entertain me and felt bad that this kind of service reflects badly on South Africa. Bakubung has a lot going for it, but customer service should not have to be delivered after an argument to demand it.

"Loved the stay ...just a shame about the service"

We loved our stay here and of a three week trip in SA this was one of the a highlights. But this is despite the service at reception and bar staff - well one very rude lady. Restaurant team were great. Upon check in the staff member practically shouted at me. I felt I should possibly apologise for checking in?! She didn't give us any details that would have made our stay better and easier. Simple things like what time the park gate closes...e.g an hour after we checked in. Also if going to visit Sun City guests of Bakubung can obtain a pass at reception and not have to enter the main entry - which makes entering and parking at Sun City so easy. It just so happened the team at the Bakubung gate were nice enough to enquire what we were doing when we left and when we said going to Sun City - they asked did we have the special pass and directions to the special entry gate ( I understand these people work for a security company and not even Bakubung! They were great every time we left and came back). Even then we went back to reception to get the gate passes the person at reception didn't ask if we knew where to go etc. Just really poor service. The bar staff at the pool ignored us - she was staring at a piece of paper and when I said excuse me and asked about getting drinks - I got the hand - not eye contact - a hand and told to wait. I didn't - we left and I could hear what I imagine was a conversation then start about us. However having said all of this - the lodge is great, overlooking a water hole, our room was great and the game viewing was fantastic plus the food and restaurant team we all good. In fact the positives outweighed the service negatives to such a degree that we would love to return one day.

"Beautiful Lodge"

I stayed here for 2 nights while visiting Pilensberg Reserve. Rooms are beautiful, food is great, and safari rides were excellent and saw a lot of animals. Drivers/ guides were very knowledgeable. Very well run.

This hotel has been sympathetically built to compliment the natural surroundings - right on the edge of Pilanesberg National Park. Service was wonderful, food was excellent, safaris were great. The room was adequate in size (a family room with two double beds - wish there was a bunk-bed option as our teenagers are not too keen on sharing) and overlooked gardens. A problem with the air-con was attended to and fixed immediately - good service. Pool is nice and refreshing. WiFi was on a limit (seems like most hotels in SA use this system) of 500MB but it was cheap to buy extra credit. I would definitely stay here again. A stand-out staff member was Dorah van Rooi - she provided excellent service in the restaurant.
