This hotel is in a stunning location. We were so looking forward to our stay. Unfortunately things were not as we expected. Upon checking into our room my husband had to immediately return to reception to request another room. I had unfortunately suffered a fractured ankle five weeks before the start of our holiday and we needed a room more suitable for the disabled. This request was dealt with immediately. We were taken to another room ten minutes later. Once in the room we discovered various lights not working, the only place in the bathroom for toiletries was a very small brown washstand, which also happened to be the only place for the complimentary toiletries, towels and tissues. Once we had our showers we discovered that the shower was leaking all over the floor. All of these issues were reported to reception. Unfortunately it took the hotel 48 hours to put these issues right, the afternoon before our departure. We found the service in general, very slow and some of the management very condescending. For a 5* hotel we rated our room at 3* We were disgusted with the attitude of the management.
"Enjoyable stay in quality hotel"
The hotel is approx 2km from the Main Street of Franschhoek. The hotel does provide a shuttle service at a cost, otherwise you need to drive. On arrival you were offered a sparkling wine and a tour of the hotel. Our room was very spacious, with his & hers basins in the bathroom. The room was kept very clean and we had a turndown service at night with a chocolate left on your pillow. Very good breakfast and good service throughout. If you want a bit of luxury, treat yourself.
"Stylish and apart from the busy main drag of Franschhoek"
Overall, a charming experience. Very tastefully laid out, concealing a much larger number of rooms (79) in back. Very comfortable bedroom, though required walking up 3 flights of stairs and had a annoying squeaking bed (Room 25). The grounds are beautifully maintained, and buffet breakfast takes advantage of the overlook. Service wasn't crisp, but ultimately fine.
"Lovely Hotel let down by mediocre management"
I am very disappointed to have to write complaining on TripAdvisor, but having written directly to Chris ( the General Manager) again via "reservations" and finally via the holding group, as of yet I haven't even received an acknowledgement of my complaint let alone a response. Basically this hotel has the potential to be a fabulous hotel with great rooms and suites set amongst some lovely grounds. The staff did their very best although clearly there were some training issues. My complaint revolves around the management - off which there seemed to be plenty milling around - unfortunately like headless chickens! Looking at previous reviews clearly something has changed at this hotel in recent months and from our experience not for the better.
The hotel is very nicely located and would be a good base for exploring the winelands. The room was nice and staff friendly. The bar is ok (although service slow) and light meals looked ok, although we did not have any meals there. However, the "Dish" "fine dining" restaurant should be avoided as it is overpriced and not fine dining -- perhaps ok as hotel food, if it was half the price. So get a light meal and save your money for other restaurants in the area.
