"Slightly Overrated"

I think my expectations of the Cape Grace may have been too high, based on all the online reviews I read. It's a good hotel, but not as great as advertised. First the good: we stayed in a beautiful room which had a view of Table Mountain. The room was spacious, the bed extremely comfortable, and the bathroom modern, with an excellent shower and a separate tub. Room service breakfasts were delicious. The not so good: in a word, service. It was close to dinner when we checked in and we asked the concierge for a restaurant recommendation (the hotel restaurant was booked). She recommended a place that could best be described as an "TGI Fridays-of-the fish world" restaurant on the pier. It was dreadful. The recommendation was not in line with the hotel's image. We also had a lot of intrusions from housekeeping as they made multiple visits per day to "check on the minibar." We never used the minibar and were bewildered as to why separate individuals needed to keep knocking on the door to do this sort of check. We ate lunch in the hotel restaurant one day and that, too, was a disappointment. The food was indifferent (we each had sandwiches), and we were served by a waiter who, I suspect, wanted to be an actor...we were his unwilling audience. If staying here, request a room with a view of Table Mountain, and be sure to research (and make reservations) restaurants in advance.

"Wonderful hotel"

Luxurious hotel on the water front. Fabulous location and felt like our home from home. Staff were amazing and nothing was too much trouble. Lovely room on the first floor with Juliet balcony overlooking the water. Hotel car took us to restaurants in the town and other locations. If you are going to Cape Town this is the place to stay. Can't recommend it highly enough. Thank you to everyone who looked after us.

"Location, Location, Location"

We spent 4 nights at this stunning property, the rooms are spacious I would say 50 - 60 sq meters in size, spacious dressing area with hers and hers wardrobe as well as a LARGE bathroom with twin vanity counter. The property is extremely well maintained with an incredible attention to detail, good selection of tea, Lavazza coffee maker they even provided fresh milk and lemon in mini bar fridge with a couple of biscotti. The room itself is well appointed with great views and invites you to spend the day relaxing, I ended up having a Spa treatment Foot Reflexology which was fantastic. The location it's within walking distance of the wharf area where there is a good selection of shops and restaurants if you don't want to eat in the hotel. We enjoyed room service as well as the phenomenal breakfasts in the restaurant. Breakfast has a few options a la carte as well as buffet all dishes were tasty and well presented all the team members in the dining room attentive with intuitive levels of customer service

"ONLY book a room facing the yacht marina, NOT the ugly buildings and working dockyard 7/10"

Summary: I believe the Cape Grace and Trailfinders / followme2AFRICA need to set realistic expectations for their customers as I found their descriptions misleading. The room allocation issue was extremely unfortunate, as all other aspects of the hotel are excellent. The actual rooms are excellent; all personnel are very good and the concierge team exceptional. In detail: I’d booked and paid for a Luxury Room and our documentation from Trailfinders, with followme2AFRICA being their South African travel agent, confirmed that we had requested “a quiet room with a fantastic view”. On arrival we were allocated a room on the third floor overlooking buildings under construction or looking derelict, next to the working dockyard – no one should describe that view as fantastic or scenic. The hotel staff did what they could and after 30 minutes we were offered a room on the first floor, closer to the V&A waterfront facing an office building – not as bad, so I accepted the room as the hotel was fully booked and they could not offer any other alternative. Being a working dockyard, even with their very good double-glazing, we were woken by ship engines or repair work to a ship docked in front of us. The hotel staff said they had experienced incorrect expectations by other Trailfinders customers previously. The Cape Grace describes the Luxury Room as “These rooms feature French doors that reveal scenic views of Cape Town's working harbour.” In my view that description is misleading; see my photo. Trailfinders had documented my request for “a quiet room with a fantastic view”, which I assume the Cape Grace received so why did the Cape Grace not contact me or Trailfinders in the six months before my arrival to advise the requests were impossible. Trailfinders currently repeat the Cape Grace text and add “a haven of tranquillity” – I’m not sure being woken by a noisy boat engine close to your window, or hearing rivets being hammered into a boat hull equate to tranquillity. I’d suggest you look at ‘Google street view’ which is a quite a bit out of date. In my view with regard to the Cape Grace, Trailfinders appear have little understanding of what they are recommending or booking.

"Made to feel special "

For such a large hotel that I know sees a lot of tourist they had an amazing way of making you feel like it was home and you were the only guest. The food options in the hotel was amazing and the rooms very comfortable. Great location and highly recommend as a place to stay.
