Over Lion Sands Ivory Lodge

"Nothing better"

The 9 private villas are nicer than most people's homes. Appointed beautifully, spacious, modern, elegant and just breathtaking views. Sitting on the Sabi River looking at Krueger National Park is just memorizing. Seeing animals right from your private terrace was wonderful. The food is as good or better than any fine dining restaurant in any major city and elegant to look at. Private plynge pool, complete privacy, non discriminating staff were amazing. It is not by any means cheap and shouldn't be. It is a experience that will never be forgotten. Safari in luxury is the best description. Private butler is a huge added value. I could not imagine a better lodge in Africa and will certainly encourage anyone with the means to stay at Ivory Lion. Truly amazing.

"Amazing Renovation"

We were lucky to be able to find our way back to this place - in our years together, this is the ONLY place my wife and I have come back to. There are so many places in the world to see - but this place is worth seeing again and again and again. The service is outstanding. They have completely renovated - when we heard they were doing this we thought they were crazy because it was beautiful. Now it is just beyond beautiful. We rode with Phillip and Patrick this trip - just as last time, not a single drive disappointed. It was more difficult to find animals because the rain means food and water are more plentiful - but we had multiple up close sightings of all of the Big 5 - and more. Go - worth it.

"Lion Sands Ivory Lodge is to die for"

We had the experience of a lifetime in the Ivory Lodge at Lion Sands. The staff are amazing, friendly and welcoming, and all this while maintaining five star service. The guides and trackers are also world class. The concierge Tshepo is also a champion who brings the lodge to life with his sense of humour. Highly recommended!

"Perfect balance of luxury and nature"

This was our first safari, and by sheer luck we happened to fall into what must be among the very best lodges that exist. The staff and service are exceptionally friendly without being overbearing. Patricia and Tammy oversee a very fun and professional team, and they themselves add life to the party. Overall the lodge is an effortlessly relaxed and comfortable environment. There are only 9 villas (one a two-bedroom), so the maximum number of guests at any time is 20. The villas are sufficiently apart so that you have privacy, and the facilities are over the top. An enormous living area with wet bar is matched by an equally enormous bedroom and bathroom with massive tub, shower and outdoor shower. The villas are very nicely appointed, with chic furnishings that blend with the setting. All rooms overlook the Sabi river, which you can enjoy from your private deck and plunge pool. I understand that they completed a major renovation in late 2016, and all facilities were in great shape. And the lodge is very thoughtful -- they provide binoculars on the drive, blankets/ponchos when whether requires, bug spray, flashlights and anything else you might want on the trip. Each villa has a dedicated butler, ranger and spotter. Ours were Solly, Neil and Patrick, and they were fantastic. The butler spoils you in the lodge and the ranger and spotter spend about 8 hours a day with you in the bush. Each drive has at most four guests in the range rover. We stayed 3 nights and did 5 drives and aside from multiple big 5 sightings saw lots of other creatures large and small. Our guides were genuinely enthusiastic and made the most of drives when the whether didn't cooperate or animals happened to be scarce, and they themselves were excited when we chanced upon more rare sightings, such as endangered wild dogs or unusual birds. You could tell that they have a real love for the animals. Being in a private reserve, the guides can off-road to pursue animals, but at the same time they have tremendous respect for the bush and preserving its natural state. Sabi Sands is private land that adjoins Kruger Park and there are no fences so the animals come and go as they please, but there was no lack of animals. You just need to keep looking and when you least expect it you find them everywhere. We got out on foot a few times to get close-up views of some animals, and the animals also venture in and around the lodge. The food was genuine gourmet cuisine, with Chef Xavier offering a refreshing variety of options at every meal. The wine selection also was fantastic. Meals and drinks are all included (except for select top shelf liquor). There is a bar on a fabulous deck overlooking the river, but there wasn't too much socialization with other guests, which was neither good nor bad -- everyone was enjoying their own safari experience. The spa facilities were great and the masseuses have a terrific touch. The Africology products and amenities are also fantastic. At the end of the day, the combination of A+ facilities and genuinely welcoming and friendly hosts make this a truly memorable experience. I highly recommend Lion Sands Ivory Lodge -- it is worth every penny. Note: you need to fly in and out of Skukuza airport, which is a half hour drive from the lodge (and of course the lodge picks you up and drops you off). It is the chicest tiny airport you will ever visit!

"It is fantastic but the ultimate experience depends on your guide"

There is nothing you miss at this lodge. A great location overlooking the sabi river, all you wish for accomodation after a refurbishment, excellent food, very flexible personal and attentive management and service and you are in skilled hand at the SPA. Definitely comparable with Singita. Why then the headline and only 4 points? You go there foremost for the animals and you rely on your guide. Particular during summer season, bushes are thick and green and animals don't must leave their shelter. Hence the motivation of your guide is crucial to find the animals. Unfortunately our guide was not engaged and we felt just been driven around. One example, we eventually saw a leopard on the move but our guide preferred driving back to the camp while other cars arrived enthusiastically. We were always the first in. Do you say someting to the guide? A tough question as you do not want to spoil the initimate relationship between you and your guide. Maybe one should have escalated it to management. All in all a great lodge but management has to make sure that one of the most important components to deliver the experience, the guide, is up to the challenge.
