Over Lion Sands River Lodge

Puur genieten!

"Lionless"

   16-07-2017
The rooms at Lions Sands are exquisite. King size beds with extra comfortable bedding and every amenity you can imagine. The game viewing was poor and the meal quality was not much better. The breakfast was great but they serve lunch an hour and a half after breakfast so no one can eat it. High tea was a big disappointment. It is very expensive to stay here and tea was a few vegetables and grilled cheese sandwiches. Other guests said the game viewing was much better in Botswana. We thought we would see a lot of animals on the reserve and July is supposed to be peak viewing season and we saw no lions, buffalo or hippo.

"Just as brilliant second time round!"

We stayed at River Lodge in early June for a couple of nights, paired with another couple of nights at Narina, having stayed here for 4 nights a few years ago. We loved it again! The service is friendly and helpful, the atmosphere is laid back and informal and the whole ambience and positioning of the lodge on the banks of the river is perfect for a safari destination. The rooms are well equipped and super comfortable, each with a view of the river bed a few meters away, the food was excellent with a wide choice at each meal, and drinks are freely available either in your room or in the large outdoor communal lounge and deck area. The safari drives we had were spectacular - Stanley, our ranger, whom we had also driven with on our previous stay, went out of his way to make our drives interesting and scenically beautiful too - and of course we managed to see all the big and small game as well! Amongst others, we were within feet of a leopard in a tree with a very recent kill, also to wild dogs and hyenas, and closer than I can ever remember being to both elephant and buffalo off road. The hot water bottles and blankets certainly increase the comfort of the first two hours of the chilly early morning game drives, and my only small suggestion for improvement would be that the lodge served/offered to serve evening dinners under cover during the winter, as they do in the summer rainfall season, as on the nights we were there it was unpleasantly cold to sit on the deck in the dark while eating, notwithstanding the kind provision of blankets for us! I thoroughly recommend Lion Sands River Lodge as a safari destination, and we will certainly return again in a few years time!

"Missing my home from home"

   28-06-2017
From the moment I arrived at Lion Sands I was taken aback by the sheer beauty of the location as if I had stepped into a film set and I fell a little more in love with it every day. Anthony our driver and guide had a passion for his vocation and an encyclopedic knowledge that we never tired of listening to. Kruger our tracker with his broad smile made us feel safe in the knowledge that he knew instinctively where to find the game. David who looked after us was kindness itself and attentive to our every need. We were a group of 7 ladies and there was lots of laughter over the next couple of days. The experience was about so much more than seeing the Big Five (which we did even in our short stay). We loved being in the bush, listening to the sounds and soaking up the changing moods depending on the time of day. Visiting Chalkley's Treehouse was an absolute highlight, although I am still not convinced I could spend the night there without a ranger and a rifle! Our stops for sundowners were fun if a little hair-raising for us townies and the stars were truly magnificent! A walking safari with Anthony was another highlight and very exciting when we discovered that what sounded like a harmless snort coming from the undergrowth was in fact very likely a white rhino that we really didn't want to encounter on foot! Lion Sands exudes quality and elegance. Guests are made to feel cared for and welcome. The staff are ever attentive watching to ensure that no-one is left without a drink or on the sidelines. Little gestures like a cappuccino at breakfast that elsewhere might be a problem or an additional charge were delivered willingly with a smile. Our room was kept spotless by the wonderful housekeeping ladies who left us decorations and lovely messages. The huge "minibar" was an added luxury that we really didn't have the capacity or time to make best use of but it was very welcome and simply added to our sense of wellbeing. The hot water bottles on our morning game drives were blissful and I loved the little Safari Journals provided so we could tick off what we had seen.. The Boma was fun and a good way to engage with other guests around the fire. We were lucky enough to visit Ivory Lodge which was a tad more exclusive and I could see how it might appeal to guests seeking a more intimate experience but personally I preferred the busier ambiance at River Lodge with more guests and a livelier atmosphere. Lion Sands is a very special place. It was fascinating to learn about the history of the family and very poignant to experience Chalkley's Treehouse and see Hilda's Rest. Some of us got to visit the local school which has proven such a great success for the local community. I am suffering acute withdrawal symptoms and will have to return with my sons to experience a little more of the magic that is River Lodge! In the meantime I will be recommending it to all my friends and clients as the perfect safari experience!

"One of the Most Incredible Places We’ve Every Stayed"

   25-06-2017
This was our first safari in Africa, and Lion Sands exceeded just about every expectation we had. The facilities are spectacular: luxury in the bush. We had two rooms – and each was clean, white, and well-maintained. Lion Sands provides the most generous minibar we’ve seen – soft drinks, cocktails, wine, snacks all complementary. The lodge itself is very comfortable, with a great overlook of the river. We had the strongest WiFi during our African trip. The staff was beyond friendly and sought to make the experience great for our entire family. Our family loved our guide, tracker, and host/waiter – who were assigned to us and build a stront bond over 4 days. The safari drives are the highlight, of course. They were fairly structured: 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., then 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. We saw all of the big 5 within our first two trips. Over the next several days, we again saw the big 5 several times. Sabi Sands does not have the volume of wildlife we saw in some other African parks (e.g., Chobe in Botswana) – there were some “dry spells” during outings – but the guide and trackers know how to make the experience great. We saw leopards (including a hunt!) and rhinos several times – and did not see them again in Africa. The food is very good, including the opportunity to try local African dishes if you’d like. You won’t believe the number of times each day you are offered food. Drinks while on safari – “sundowner” – are an incredible experience. Try the tree house! Our family did one night. You are alone – in the dark (only lanterns) – isolated in the beauty of Africa. Again, Lion Sands made the experience an outstanding one. The only complaint we’d have: the showers. A surprisingly poor experience given all the other luxury at Lion Sands. We had very little hot water – and when we did we would quickly lose it. Neither housekeeping or management were able to offer solutions.

"Lion Sands River Lodge is perfect"

   23-06-2017
Absolutely perfect in every way. I can't even enumerate the details because everything was spot on. Rooms are stunning, service is exquisite - attentive but not intrusive, common areas gorgeous, food was superb, guiding was phenomenal and included not just animals but explored plant life and stars when the animals were playing hide and seek (although we did see every animal known to man multiple times). Our first night we had 2 elephants "join" us for dinner. Our second night a hyena stopped by. The lantern lit pathways are gorgeous. I was concerned because I had originally wanted Ivory Lodge or Singita or Londolozi but I stand corrected. River Lodge was perfect - and the perfect blend of fabulous service and relaxed vibe so as not to be stuffy or uptight. The Kingston Treehouse experience is a must do. We would like to move here forever. (This won't fit in the "room tip" space so putting it here - If you are traveling with kids or teens, understand that like all lodges, you cannot move between the rooms on your own after dark. Therefore, if you want to be able to access your kids after dinner or have "family time", you need the connecting suites. We split one parent and one teen since we did not have the connecting rooms and it worked but the connecting rooms would have been better.
