"Perfection and Surprises"

   19-02-2017
This has been my fifth visit to Londolozi in the past eight years. And my first to Varty Camp. As usual, a perfect vacation. It is very hard to find flaws here, if one wants a true safari experience. But what sets Londolozi apart is the effort and skills by management and staff to personalize the experience. The cuisine is exceptional and sophisticated, but in my last trip we fell in love with (of all things) the meat pies served at high tea. So a plate of meat pies welcomed our return at our first lunch on our current trip. And staff ensures many more substantial surprises for each guest - I won't spoil the fun by revealing any. But after so many visits, I had assumed that we had exhausted every surprise they could throw at us. I was wrong, as they made dinner the second night on this trip an unforgettable experience. We have had the pleasure of getting to know many staff members, who always remember us and come greet us no matter where in the various camps they are working. A few recommendations - consider Tree camp as your first option. Having stayed in Tree, Granite, and (this time) Varty, we think Tree Camp is the best combination of price and value. And Phil at Tree always ensures that guests have a great time. Also, we recommend travel in the winter months (May-July). While colder and with less daylight, the absence of bugs and unpredictable weather makes this season the better choice. Finally, don't be shy about letting staff know your preferences and dislikes. They take that information to heart and customize your visit to your desires in most instances. Space does not allow a review of the game viewing and skillful trackers and rangers - but Londolozi of course is world-renown in this area. The Varty family has created something very special in the world here, and I strongly advise anyone who can manage it to make this destination as a top priority. We have been fortunate to have Byron available as our ranger on the last four trips. With him we have seen it all, from the elusive cheetah and wild dogs to a lioness's attack on a cape buffalo in the river (the buffalo won that round). After being on Londolozi staff for several years, Byron no longer works there regularly. But they welcome him back for us as a privately-arranged guide in conjunction with Londolozi's expert trackers (like Innocent on this trip, and Sersant and Judas in the past). Byron + Londolozi = Perfection.

"An incredible place, absolutely unforgettable."

My husband and I spent 3 nights at Londolozi on our honeymoon last October. It was our first safari experience and we were blown away - they truly went above and beyond. Everything about our stay was perfect - the staff's attention to detail is extraordinary. Everyone that we talked to was friendly, welcoming and eager to help. The game drives were phenomenal. On our first day, we arrived a bit later than expected (flight delay) and instead of missing out on the afternoon drive entirely, they coordinated with our guide and tracker and drove us out to the bush to meet up with everyone. The food was delicious, we didn't have a single bad meal. My husband is vegetarian and it wasn't a problem at all - the staff made sure that he was taken care of, making vegetarian dishes off menu if they didn't have something that he could eat. We were told that, with enough notice, the kitchen could make anything! One night, after we came back from our evening game drive, we found a bubble bath drawn for us with candles, chilled champagne, and rose petals. Another night, the camp held a dinner in the bush for everyone which was a lovely surprise. When we left, we were given a honeymoon gift (a Londolozi cheese plate) and every time we use it, we are reminded of this special place. We loved our time at Londolozi and cannot wait to return one day!

"Amazing in every way!"

I would recommend this to any one as part of their safari. We get to see the African bush often, but this is truly an incredible place! Warm, kind smiley faces everywhere! Amazing food, amazing service, and there is something for everyone to do - gym, yoga, shopping, culture and photography.

"Incredible"

We spent three nights and did a total of 6 game drives. Perfect in every way. We saw the big five on more than one occasion. Food was exceptional, the staff we all amazing and I can honestly say that the memories we have got from Londolozi will stay with the children, my husband and I for the rest of our lives. Really hope we get back again as I have no doubt second time round would be just as good.

"Wow!"

I really don't know what to say except that this place took our breath away - the amazing staff, the environment and atmosphere, the food, the rooms, the setting and even the other hotel guests. Everything was truly five-stars! To name a few staff members - Sandro our ranger gave us a unique experience, Alice in the creative studio was lovely and helpful, Rob/Philip were great camp managers and everyone else in the staff was lovely! The rooms were the perfect balance of modern luxury while still staying true to the surroundings. Heated plunge pool would have been nice but you are in the bush so :) Every meal was amazing - from coffee with amarula cream on the morning drives to lunch to cocktails in the bush to booma dinners in the evening! One night they even put up a table (with nibbles/snacks and basically a full bar), chairs, torches in the middle of the bush under the stars for just our vehicle - amazing! We even decided to stay an extra night and forgo our room in J-burg but as Varty was fully booked they arranged for us to stay in Tree Camp for the extra night instead. We were also lucky as they arranged for us to be able to stay with the our initial ranger and tracker for the extra night! I've written a separate review on tree camp. This place exceeded every possible expectation and all I want to do is go back! We saw the big five on almost every drive, two sets of leopard cubs (the youngest only two months old), hippo babies, hyenas munching on their kill, too many rhinos to count (saw one having a mud bath too), giraffes with babies and also giraffes drinking water, several male lions and several stunning adult leopards in many enticing situations! Can't believe our luck! Worst part of Londolozi is having to leave! Thank you for making our trip so amazing!
