"Very nice lodge with superb kitchen"
We were lucky to get a recommendation for this lodge. We had a very nice Chalet for our own with a beautiful interiour. It is a mix between african art, colonial style and Safari Ambiente. But the best is the kitchen of this lodge. The best filet we had in south africa in combination with the good Cabernet Sauvignon of the vinery Allesverloren. As a starter we recommend the Springbock carpaccio. Prices are very fair,
"Lovely, relaxing stay"
We had a really memorable stay at the Rissington Inn on a recent trip to South Africa. We used it as a base for the Panoramic Route and a self-guided drive through Kruger (we spent the four days prior at a lodge in Sabi Sands Reserve). The hotel is less than 15 minutes from the Kruger gate and an hour or less to various overlooks and sites along the Panoramic Route (Tip: We hiked the Leopard Trail from the Blyde RIver Canyon Forever resort and thought it was an excellent way to explore the canyon. It's a 3-4 hour hike and you can access a map, trailhead and parking for less than $5 from the resort). We didn't have much time to explore the town of Hazyview but know that there's plenty to do there as well (elephant sanctuary, horse riding, adventure park, etc.). There didn't appear to be much for restaurants or bars in town though. From the moment we arrived at the Rissington, we felt at home. The staff were very friendly and accommodating as were the other guests. Everyone was very social in the bar and many had been coming back to the Rissington year after year (and offered GREAT advice on getting around the area and Kruger). We ate dinner at the hotel all three nights and found the restaurant to be really romantic and affordable. The food was good and the wine list was outstanding. A couple recommendations for improvement: Add safes to each room. They offer the use of their safe in the reception area but we prefer having a safe in our room. Also, there was only an outdoor shower (and gorgeous soaking tub) in the Teak room, where we were staying which wasn't a problem for us but may be for some. The room was private, gorgeous, clean and cozy. Loved the decor, hammock and complimentary sherry. Great value for the money and we hope to say again.
"Not to be missed!"
Just driving up the lane way to the property is intriguing in itself, wondering what the hell is going to be at the end of it!! And what a pleasant surprise. Set on acreage, cottages spaced here and there, very calming & attractive. The staff are super helpful and happy always to attend to your every need, the service was a credit to them. We stayed in a lower budget room with all the extra amenities we weren't expecting, I even found the hairdryer! (private joke) No TV! perfect, yes what a godsend, you don't need the ugly noise to interfere with your surroundings. The spacious room included a comfy bed, slate floors, french windows, a large bathroom, even a welcoming carafe of sherry to imbibe a glass to "wash away the dust"! How thoughtful & a delight to sample. You can sit outside and watch the evening pass by or read a book and listen to the birds awaken in the morning with a cup of Rooibos! The room is tastefully done & a pleasure to be there after the drive from Jburg. There is a swimming pool to relax by, the security is great - you see them patrolling the grounds. The main hotel is quite large sporting a TV room if needed, nooks and crannies for reading or lazing, the bar deck with a glass of wine to watch the sunset. Here is the best part, the food is magnificent - dinner superb, the chefs are amazing, do not miss breakfast - the range of food is incredible, from home made scones - still warm, quiches, meats & cheeses, local fare, cereals & a cooked breakfast. Plenty of choices for seating, in & out, cosy or with the mob. Such a gem, we tried to stay again on our way out of Kruger but of course fully booked. You will not be disappointed, oh & get this they even wash your car before departing. I loved it all, and by the way, I haven't got a problem carrying my own bags, I wouldn't expect anyone else to do that for me. Well done Rissington Inn, us Aussies loved it.
"Didn't love this place"
I think our biggest complaint about this place was the lack of service. Our 5 duffels sat out front until a man grabbed two and the petite check in woman went to help him. Of course, when we say her struggling, we ran over to get our own bags and haul them to our rooms. Half the bags needed to go up a flight of stairs but instead of offering to help, the man just left. All in all, there is really nothing to recommend except the dinner, which was excellent.
"Fantastic gem of a hotel"
We stayed as a family during July at the beginning of our adventure in S Africa and wish all the hotels we stayed in were like this. We had booked one of the hillside suites which were definitely recommended....we had the one not overlooking the private pool but it gave us a private patio and obviously the use of the private pool....best of both worlds. ALL the staff here are lovely, very friendly and helpful....a few names to thank personally are Enzekiel, Eugenia and Sydney and then Hlengiwe who was in hysterics when asked for 'crispy bacon'....we could hear the giggles from the kitchen when she went to order our food!! We were given helpful advice for our travels and nothing was too much trouble. The food, as mentioned on other reviews, is out of this world. The fillet steak fell to bits and my husband said the burger was the best he has ever tasted....to add to this it was very good value. My only tiny negative is I wish we had been warned that the hotel is a mile down an unmade road and our hire car was not the best. This hotel is a hidden gem.
