Het Addo Elephant National Park is een aantrekkelijk nationaal park op 70 kilometer ten noordoosten van Port Elizabeth.
We stayed in a rondovel which was very basic but situated overlooking the waterhole. It was also very close to the restaurant and shop. Accomodation was clean but lacked a kettle. If you wanted a drink you needed to walk to the communal kitchen which I did. Again, no kettle could be found so I boiled water on the stove but then there were no cups. So my advice is to pack a kettle and some cups if you want to be able to drink. The restaurant was quite basic and my meal was awful. I felt the site needed a cafe as well as a restaurant. The shop was ok but again, only sold a limited supply of food. The park itself was lovely. We were able to get up really close to the elephants. We also booked two game drives. These were a little disappointing as the ranger did not really venture off the main roads or stop for very long to take photos. I also found it annoying that people were allowed to stand up in the jeep on the occasions we did stop for photos as this blocked everyone’s view. Our sightings of the animals were best when we self drove. We were able to spend as long as we wanted looking at the animals we were interested in. I would love to return to Addo as we only spent a day there and that is not long enough to do it justice but I would not book a game drive again as the ones we did ourselves were far more enjoyable. I would also book less basic acomodation.
"The safari tents are great!"
I spent two nights in one of the safari tents and it was a great experience! I saw a rhino, elephants, kudu and warthogs right outside of my door. Driving around the park, I was also able to see lions, mongooses, zebras and lots of different antelopes ... even a puff adder. The park never felt too crowded. I'd definitely recommend it.
"Good location "
We spent one night here and would recommend it purely due to its location. We had Domkrag guest house which has a good view of the waterhole. We were concerned that we would have no view due to other posts about this lodge saying it was overgrown however the surrounding bushes appear to have been cut back. We used the bbq for our evening meal which was fine and bought charcoal and food for this from the shop next to the cattle baron. The shop has a frozen food section where you can buy pork sausages, steaks, chicken and veggie burgers. You can also buy fresh vegetables to roast. We went to the Cattle Baron for breakfast which was great. If you want to visit here for your evening meal you can book directly with the restaurant after you’ve checked in. The lodge itself did feel old and in need of refurbishment however the location of this lodge inside the park was worth it. You have to pay for your permit to Addo when you check in which was 544 rand for two people This will last 24 hours. You can enter the park early (it opened at 5.30am when we were there) if you are staying inside the park. For non residents the gates opened at 7am.
I booked a 2 bed chalet and having previously stayed at other San Parks main camps in Kruger I was pleasantly surprised as this was a better standard overall from an accommodation perspective and overall facilities in the camp. The room was large and clean with reasonably new bedding and towels (folded delightfully - see photo). The bathroom had a good sized shower with strong water pressure. The kitchen was fully equipped with hotplates, Fridge freezer, microwave, toaster, all pots /pans, plates, cutlery and cooking utensils needed for self catering. The balcony had a nice view although you could hear your neighbours and see the forest cabins so it did not have a feeling of seclusion (unlike Matyholweni). In terms of the overall camp facilities there was a nice “Interpretive centre†which detailed the history of the area and details of the fauna and flora. Also a viewing hide and platform were setup around a waterhole. The Cattle Baron restaurant had WiFi although the menu was fairly basic but sufficient. There’s a small shop with basic food supplies if self catering, and it also sells the official guide which is well worth the 60R price with lots of interesting facts and history of the park. There’s also a Petrol station which is the only one inside the park. For the best Elephant sightings they are around the “woodlands†section only 5 mins from camp with huge herds that can be 50+ strong! However, for other wildlife I had more numerous sightings in the southern part of the park (other than Elephants). In general the camp offers a nice comfortable stay whilst watching those wonderful Elephants! Enjoy.
"We were 2 families staying in 3 chalets with great views on part of the park and lots of animal and birdlife activity."
The chalets were comfortable and clean, located a short drive from the reception and the restaurant/shop area. We spent 2 nights in Addo itself and one night in Nyathi in a separate area of the park. This was our first visit and we had great sightings of animals, especially elephants (unsurprisingly) and will certainly be bringing family and friends here again.
