We stayed at Ukozi Lodge for 5 nights and 9 drives and I can say that experience totally exceeded our expectations. We were lucky to have Rosie as a guide. So knowledgeable and able to cope with anything or any questions. Luck is when Planning meets opportunity and seeing the big five in the first two days tells me a lot of planning was done. Her knowledge, communicative skills and quick thinking makes her one of Kariega's main assets. The reserve has approximately 25000 acres of wonderful country made up of plains and intensely wooded hills, ravines and valleys. So much land which explains how it is so easy to lose 55 elephants! We saw the big 5 plus, plus, plus! Amazing. The management who interact with you apart from the amazing Ranger are also of the first water. The Manager at Ukhozi was perfect and also an ex- Ranger. She was very hands on and dealt with minor health issues with great empathy, speed and efficiency. Greeting endless bush drives each day with a smile, refreshment and a hot towel could be searingly monotonous but one really felt you were being welcomed by her and her staff as old friends. Of the 9 bush drives done, the welcome was always genuine. Accommodation: very clean, very comfortable, secure and spacious. Wonderful deck overlooking an immense valley where we watched big game in the distance by binocular and scope. The plunge pool on your own private deck was about 8' x 6' x 5' deep approx and great to cool off in. The decor/fit out of the room is approximately 18 years old and as it is sold as a luxury package could really do with a light refresh. In the bathroom I would retain the bath and the granite top but the basin, taps and whole shower enclosure should really be replaced to underwrite the luxury offer. They are all fine and work well and they are clean but things have moved on and they are out of kilter with the expectation. We couldn't understand how one could be safe on Safari in the open vehicles we had but even though a lioness came within 18 inches of us, I could have stroked her, we felt safe with our Ranger. Strict rules on not standing up to keep the vehicle profile the same means they are used to the daily viewing. The whole Diesel/petrol stink of the vehicle also makes you unappetizing. You eat in the Lodge close by. Food was very good as were the staff who were wonderful and made you feel so welcome. The Bhoma barbque and Dancing were most enjoyable and the one held outside in the stockade very atmospheric. Attached to the lodge is lovely atmospherically landscaped swimming pool with shaded loungers for great down time. My wife and I would thoroughly recommend Ukhozi Lodge. We have no connection in any way to them.
Spent three nights here, and loved it all. After a stay in a beautiful hotel, this is completely rustic, but nonetheless no issues. The staff are all lovely, nothing is too much trouble. If you are not happy with something, just ask, it will be provided within minutes. The plunge pools are cold, but the main pool is fine. The food is lovely, and the wine flows! The game drives were brilliant, our driver, Gugu got us incredibly close to lions, elephant, rhino, and pretty much everything else. The park is well stocked with game and there's loads to see. You will have a great time here.
Spent 3 wonderful days on the Eastern Cape at the Kariega Game Reserve staying at one of the Ukhozi lodges. First time on safari and I would suggest a reserve such as this is the perfect introduction to safari - guaranteed to see big game yet also benefit from some luxurious surroundings. Our guide for the 3 days was Rosie and her knowledge of flora and fauna was superb and she was incredibly accommodating ensuring all her guests saw what they hoped for. She was quite simply a brilliant guide and even went as far as providing my wife and I with a list of things to do when at our next destination, Cape Town, most of which we were also able to do. Lauren's helpfulness and attention to detail was also to be commended and she couldn't have been more helpful when a storm led to loss of electricity in our lodge and finding us another one to move to. The food and free-flowing wine were both superb, as was the company. A great setting and a fabulous introduction to the wonders of safari. Fortuitously, we had a lioness in season stimulating lots of action amongst the boys - a once in a lifetime experience as it all unfolded - some battered and bruised lion faces the next day. Large herd of elephants, loads of giraffes and zebras and far too many varieties of antelope and other wildlife - almost impossible to take it all in as well as the cutest baby white rhino you could possible imagine. We weren't sure quite what to expect from our safari adventure but this surpassed those expectations in every way. Hats off to Rosie, Lauren and the Kariega team - great job and many thanks. Ashley and Clare.
"Enjoyable Safari Experience"
We stayed 3 night and had 6 game drives. We were lucky and managed to hit a few dry warm days between rain - just the luck of the draw, but beware it does rain in February. Big room, with a fabulous view from the deck which is set high up on a plateau. We wished we'd brought binoculars. Better yet, this would be a suggested improvement for the management - to provide a pair in the room. The plunge pool was freezing so we didn't use it. We'd have loved a couple of recliners on the deck to enable us to snooze in the shade in the open air after the morning game drive. We also thought the chairs on the deck needed back as well as seat cushions as they weren't comfortable to sit on for any length of time. The room was beautifully furnished with a huge bed - very comfortable - and airconditioning. The toilet is in a small separate room with a door, but the bathroom/shower area is simply semi-screened from the rest of the cabin - not a problem for us, but some may prefer more privacy. Our only real criticism of the room was the quality of cleaning. We're perfectly happy not to have our towels changed daily and fully understand the water shortages. But for a 3-night stay we'd have appreciated one fresh towel each day, as ours tended to remain a bit damp. We used the provided bug-spray to clear the room of bugs, which was fine. But the dead bugs then remained on the toilet floor for the duration of our stay, so it clearly wasn't swept. We also found the little milk cartons provided for tea/coffee were 2 weeks out of date, and the fridge had sand inside. All of that said, the game drives were fabulous. I don't get the impression Kariega is the best-stocked of all the malaria-free game reserves. But we saw the 2 male lions and 3 lionesses, as well as a herd of elephant (a real highlight) and several rhino, even a 3-week old rhino calf, which was a treat. We also saw buffalo enjoying a mud bath. We were lucky enough to see a black rhino which I understand is quite rare. The hippo were almost fully submerged, but we can certainly say we saw the big 5, excepting leopard, which we never really expected. Gladman, our guide, helped to make the experience. Great sense of humour and knowledgeable about the flaura and fauna as well as the animals. The quality of food was very good and we enjoyed mixing with the other guests. Overall a really good experience, let down slightly by the housekeeping, and with just a few suggestions for the extra touches that would transform it from good to great.
"Lovely atmosphere, great service"
We spent four nights here visiting the Game Reserve. Lovely spacious accomodation with great food and service. Not many places have staff that can also provide great African singing. The view from the rooms is superb and the beds very large and comfortable. The food, wine and and the solicitous service first rate even if it was difficult to avoid excess (not their fault!!). The game safaris were very well organised and we had a great guide. We saw virtually everything we expected too and all very well explained. We did not see a leopard but did not really expect to. We were very pleased to be accompanied by some other great guests who, with the help of the humour of the guide, ensured we had a ball. This was paticularly the case after we had stopped for evening cocktails in the bush and G&Ts had been provided. We found that four nights worked very well to see everything and did not feel we needed to stay longer. Highly recommended.
