"Everything except the leopard!"
We would recommend Kariega to anyone, we spent four days there and had an amazing time. The accommodation and food were wonderful and our superb guide Rosie took us on two drives each day which were perfect. Rosie is endlessly knowledgeable and patient, and tracked down for us all the big five except the leopard, and countless other animals and birds. Th whole "flavour" of Kariega is to observe nature but not interfere or damage, very ethical and responsible.
Spent 3 nights at Ukhozi lodge and WOW. Rooms were nice and big, and had own plunge pool. Amazing view from rooms. Take a pair on Binoc's with you. Food was amazing, service was amazing and our game driver made sure we got to see as much as we could. Sad to say no Cheetahs on Kariega, but that did not dampen the spirits. Got to see the Lions heaps (mating season) along with all the other wild life. Was not too far from main lodge, so could walk over and have drinks at the bar they have. Could sit on the deck all day and look over the amazing view. Spotted heaps from there and Ukhozi lodge.
First time in safari but I can't stress enough what a great time me and my husband had on this trip. The whole set up is wonderful and well organised. Linda the general manager is professional and very welcoming and our guide Rosie is beyond her years and surprises us with her depth of knowledge regarding many topics not just questions regarding the game reserve. We only stayed for 2 days but will return with our family in a few years to come. This place is definitely well worth the trip from the U.K.
"Excellent time "
My wife and I spent two nights in Ukhozi Lodge. We would strongly recommend Kariega for a safari. We had four game drives in total and saw a wide range of animals. Our favourites were Rhinos, Giraffe, Elephants, and lions. The staff who looked after us were excellent. Our ranger Rosie had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the animals on the reserve which ensured we had very enjoyable drives. The staff at the restaurant prepared very tasty meals and were on hand to look after our every need.
We stayed in suite 2 of the lodges from the 6th March for four nights. The lodges was large, with a huge bed and veranda with a plunge pool. There is no tv (not an issue for us) and no wifi until you get into the main lodge. The reserve is about a two hour drive from Port Elizabeth airport. On arrival you get dropped at reception and your guide comes to meet you. You stay with the same guide throughout your stay. Our guides name was Gugu and he was great; knowledgeable, patient, fun and did his best to find all the big 5. In all we had 8 drives and 1 river cruise. Morning drives start at 0600hrs and you're back for breakfast around 0900hrs. Afternoon drives start at 1600hrs and you return for dinner around 1930hrs. We also did a night drive that started around 2100hrs and lasted a couple of hours. The drives are great and seeing the animals in natural habitat is just fantastic and the adrenaline rush when you come face to face with a lion is something you just have to experience. On that note ask for a night drive cause going out into the African bush in the dark searching for lions, in an open topped vehicle, beats any white knuckle activity I can think of. I would recommend that you go for at least a three night safari as a 2 night one may just not give you enough time to see everything. The river cruise is relaxing but you'll only see birds as there's no hippos or crocodiles. We found the staff to be very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Ukhozi lodge is all inclusive and as such the only money you'll need is for tips. The food is good, breakfast is chosen from a menu as is the evening meal. Dinner/lunch is served at 1400hrs and is a buffet. There is a variety of beers, wines and spirits. We had a fantastic time and have no hesitation in recommending the Kariega Game Reserve as a safari destination. If you're considering a safari get it booked and do it, you won't be disappointed.
