"A superb lodge in every way"
The physical plant is extremely attractive. The game viewing was excellent and Wayne was a superb ranger. We enjoyed every moment with him. The reserve is very beautiful and the scenery quite varied. The food was very good and artistically presented. This is an excellent choice for a safari in the Eastern Cape. Settlers Drift is small, exclusive and certainly the best of the lodges that Kariega has to offer. Congratulations for making this a very special place
Loved Settler's Drift. I was in suite two which was absolutely stunning, the accommodation was beautifully designed, huge space and very chilled out space. Public areas were so well thought out with covered and outdoor space. Food was really good and loved the braai and Boma nigh singers. Staff were fantastic, it must take a lot of work and years of experience to make everything run so smoothly. Game drives were brilliant, impressed by how much variety of wildlife we were able to see, with four out of the big five, the guide's (Louis) knowledge and how close we could get without disturbing the wildlife. Greatful to Jo (the manager) for the opportunity to do see the other Kariega properties during the three nights I stayed at Settler's Drift. Thank you for such a memorable visit to the Eastern Cape.
"Wow wow wow"
Had such high expectations of this lodge and it surpassed at every level. Location and view - amazing, tucked away 10k from the main road, you enter the park gates and are led to the boat and journey up stream by your guide/ranger (Vicki in our case). The lodge is set into the hillside overlooking the Savannah with plenty of wildlife visible (zebra, giraffe, antelopes, ostrich, etc). Lodge itself is spacious with lots of seating options inside and out and never felt crowded even though it was full. Your room (wow!) is huge and so private with the same amazing views through the bush of the valley/Savannah. Bed was comfy and bathroom nice with a shower that can easily revert to inside/outside dependant on your preference. Products were ok. Couple of improvement suggestions would be the towels could have been newer and they weren't always replenished (although always rectified immediately once reported) plus the air con which was slightly underpowered for the African summer. But these were fairly minor points. Also worth nothing that you need to be fairly comfortable with your travelling companion as the shower and bath is quite open! Game drives - Vicki took care of us and ensured we fully explored the reserve and saw most animals we were hoping to see including hyenas and rhinos. 2 of our 3 days we experienced a lion kill which was amazing (although a little gruesome). Drives were at 6am and 4pm with optional night, walking and river excursions - walking safari was an experience with a totally different perspective of the animals. Vicki was professional and made us feel safe at all times with such close proximity to the animals, all excursions were informative and entertaining. Food and service - all meals were great and service excellent. You can either eat with your fellow travellers or dine on a table for the 2 of you (which we prefer). Our final night they even set up a complete private dining experience within the lodge set with our own fire, candles and wait staff - brilliant. Once every few days they also do a Boma (outside bbq) where again you can sit with your fellow travellers or have you own table. Food wasn't quite as good as in the main restaurant although still v tasty. The staff then sing traditional Southern Africa songs for you between main course and dessert for about 10 minutes - this was really special and so atmospheric. Would highly recommend - "go on" treat yourself !!!!
"Totally mega !! Loved it "
Spent 3 nights at Settlers Drift as part of SA tour. I had really high expectations for this place having read previous reviews and research of website etc. Can honestly that say that it still managed to blow my expectations out of the water and I was in tears as I left this wonderful property. From the second we arrived we were until we left it was stunning. The tented suites are opulent but still blend into the surrounds. It actually took me until the last night to realise there was no Tv in the suite (not that I would have switched it on) as we were so busy and captivated by what was going on outside. Our ranger Vicky â¤ï¸ took us on 2 drives a day and her knowledge of the animal, plant and bird life was exceptional. We had many amazing encounters with lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes etc although the leopard escaped us but that's hardly surprising given the vast area. I was a little upset not to see Thandi and Thembi as I am an avid follower of their story but it would appear that whilst we were there Thandi had taken herself off to give birth to her second calf in seclusion so that is totally cool by me x The food prepared by chef Tony was sublime. The service staff were outstanding too - special mention to Cedric who kept our glasses topped up constantly. Overall this was the most amazing experience and I cannot recommend Settlers Drift highly enough. Just get it booked and go see for yourself. XxxxxxX
"An incredible stay at a place that felt like home"
We spent three nights at Settlers Drift as part of our honeymoon in the first week of Jan. Right from the start, Phil and Jo made us and our fellow holidayers feel welcome and at home. We had two game drives per day and upon return from each were always greeted with a hot towel and a drink, even when we went on a walking safari and they weren't sure what time we would be back. The lodges attention to detail is impeccable, both with respect to food, décor and service. All of the staff were incredible, from the amazing guides (Vicky's knowledge knows no bounds and she went over and above every day to ensure we had the best experience), the chef and serving staff to Jo and Phil who ensure we were always topped up with a drink and had a great knowledge of the wine pairings with dinner. The food was lovely, breakfast overlooking the reserve, a relaxed/drop in afternoon lunch was a nice relaxed style and dinner each night was lovely with a great choice and a variation between eating together and with your jeep people. As we were on honeymoon, they decorated our room, leaving a lovely candle lit bath and some fizz and organised a private dinner for two on our last evening, away from the main restaurant. The lodges are all beautiful, with modern décor and despite being called 'tented' it doesn't feel like being in any sort of tent I have ever seen! We loved that there were only 9 rooms and so it was fairly private and also that there were only 6 people per car. highlights were seeing the big 4 (no Jaguar) plus SO MANY other animals including hippos. Our bush walk was incredible and we loved stopping for team drinks in the bush, a coffee in the morning to wake us up and a gin in the evening. Once again, a huge thanks to everyone for making our time there so special and helping us make memories we will never forget. We left (very hungover) and feeling sad to go. TAKE ME BACK!!
