"Wonderful, wonderful, Kariega"
We stayed at Settlers Drift for four nights. It was the most wonderful experience. The tented lodges are superb, with a fire you can light and a bah looking out onto the plains nearby. Everything feels so luxurious it becomes just part of this whole experience. Our ranger Louie, was superb. He was so passionate, interesting and his understanding and feel for the animals we saw made the experience amazing. Louie took us on a bush walk and we were able to get 'up close and personal' with a whole group of giraffes. We learnt about tracking and respect for the animals who were tolerating our presence. I will also not forget our early morning drives with a mid drive break and hot chocolate (with added milk on the insistence of Louie) or our evening drives with a whole range of bar drinks and nibbles to sustain us!! We had a small community of travellers (6) that made up our group and we had breakfast and evening meals with them and Louie, which added to the experience as well. One evening we had a BBQ with local dancers contributing and One evening ur small community were treated to a superb evening meal in front of the biggest log fire I have ver seen. It was such an enjoyable time. You can also eat by yourself but we really enjoyed is talking over what we had just seen on the drive. Food at the lodge was also amazing, I am a fussy eater but the chef always produced something to my liking. Morning drive normally started at 6pm so there was drinks and a cake before leaving. Brunch was provided on return from the mor big drive about 10-10.30am. In. The afternoon there was afternoon tea before going on the afternoon drive around 4pm with dinner on return about 8- 8.30pm ish. Jo and her husband work hard to ensure that each persons stay is the best it can be, and along with the staff who work incredibly hard provide an overall wonderful experience. It is so peaceful and quiet, not only can you stop and listen to the environment but you can also hear yourself think, which having left there, I realise is a privilege as well. I cannot praise the Kariega Settlers Drift enough and am thrilled we had this amazing experience. I cannot wait to go back.
We spent three fantastic days at Settler’s Drift as part of our honeymoon and we are so glad that we did. Our stay was amazing start to finish. As we entered the gates in our hire car we were met by a herd of elephants that had not been seen for several days – and this was a sign of things to come! As we arrived in time for the boat, we were met at the jetty by our ranger for the next 3 days and travelled by boat to the camp - this was an excellent introduction to the reserve. We thoroughly enjoyed the game drives – we saw so much at such close proximity and our ranger Wayne was enthusiastic & knowledgeable. We particularly enjoyed the bush walk one evening amongst the giraffes and other highlights were the month old rhino, the new-born baby elephant and finally finding the lionesses tucking into their zebra! Our only advice would be to wrap up warm – were weren’t entirely prepared for the cold but the blankets and the morning hot water bottles were very welcome, as were the warm towels that welcomed us back to the lodge after each drive! The luxury tents were absolutely fantastic – huge, comfortable and very private, with a fridge stocked with a complimentary mini bar & there was a log burner for cold nights (though we did have difficulty getting the wood to burn even with the help of firelighters!!). We also enjoyed sitting on our private terrace during the afternoon watching the animals in the plain below (giraffe, zebra, antelope). Meals were tasty and were enjoyed as part of your group with your ranger. All the staff were friendly and helpful and made us very welcome throughout our stay. We also both used the spa and had a whole body massage which was a great treat during the free time between game drives. Overall a really great stay and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Settler’s Drift to anyone looking for a fantastic safari experience combined with total luxury.
"Amazing place to stay with safari's at sunrise and sunset daily "
First class 5 * accommodation in tents but not your usual tents open air showers and scenery pure peace and luxury with safari's forget expensive Kruger and a must, stay here ! Easy to visit if been to Cape Town or the garden route via car. Safari guide Louie excellent very knowledgeable.
"Nicest place I have ever stayed!"
Stayed 2 nights/3 days here and it was without doubt the nicest place any of our party had ever stayed. We couldn’t have been happier with the service and how accommodating Jo and her team were to us. On leaving, we genuinely felt like we were leaving friends behind. Vicky was an amazing tour guide and has such a love for her job. Her keen interest was something that we personally took on and we learned so much from her throughout our 2 days doing game drives. The accommodation was superb, the little touches like having the fire lit or the air-con on (depending on the weather) when you returned to the lodges was extra special! The food was superb and the BBQ with the African music were such a treat. We were so spoiled for the entire team we were visiting Settlers Drift. The staff are so helpful, friendly and accommodating. I couldn’t recommend Kariega settlers drift highly enough. Although we stayed in extremely nice places for our entire South Africa trip, this was the cream of the crop!
We have just spent 3 nights here, the "tents" are amazing very comfortable with heating plus log fires in the evening & electric blankets so nobody is cold even though the nights are. Hot water bottles for early morning drives were great, take & wear lots of layers & gloves & a beanie, put more layers on as it gets colder on the evening drive & take some off as the morning sun warms you. If your layers are not enough there are blankets & ponchos on the vehicle. Our ranger was Louie who was fabulous, great affinity with the numerous animals we saw, we had a very close encounter with a herd of noisy elephants by a water hole which raised the heart rate a bit but Louie was so calm & relaxed. We also did a walk on one evening (with a rifle) we went within 250 yards of 2 big rhino but we were downwind & quiet & they did not see us, it was very exciting. The food was lovely & all drinks except the very best wines were included but the house wine was what we drink at home & that was very plentiful, drinks round a huge fire every evening before dinner with your ranger & fellow guests, all of us in our vehicle came & left on the same day which was great for getting to know everyone. Try to get there in time for the boat which leaves the gate at 13.30 you ride down the river to the jetty near the lodge & your luggage is in your room before you. We saw hippos in the river at sundowner drinks, lions, elephants, rhino & all types of game, lots of birds too, all in all a fantastic experience which we will remember for ever.
