"Stunning refined ambience in a delightful town."
Firstly , the hotel is ideally positioned on one of the busiest tourist streets in Stellenbosch but that in no way detracts from our stay. It is a very old hotel with new buildings added and despite the contrast in decor between the very old fashioned traditional decor in the bar and reception which is beautiful , and the very modern rooms it still gives a lovely ambience to the whole place. The rooms are comfortable , airy and clean. Our room looked onto the courtyard area where there is a swimming pool one can relax next to at the end of busy days. There is a restaurant with in and outdoor seating areas. The food was presented artistically and tasted really nice and the menu choice was very good also. I found the staff to be helpful and welcoming and would love to stay there again in the future. There is a car park for hotel guests and Valet parking is offerred due to the small busy street in order to improve the smooth running of the hotels guests arriving and departing. Overall an excellent stay. Everything was delightful.
Staff were excellent. Good central location. Room was good and spacious. Breakfast was self serve and hot dishes could have been hotter, but the choice was vast in range. We had dinner and it was fine, but dining room lacks ambience, table clothes and subdued lighting, just the little things that make a difference.
"Overall great, with a few staffing exceptions that let the hotel down"
We enjoyed our 3 night stay at Oude Werf Hotel in Stellenbosch. We arrived by car, and when I stepped into the hotel the security guard was quick to help show my husband where to park (which was actually blocking the entrance to the attached parking garage so a valet could move it to the other parking garage). The man who worked at the front desk was less helpful. Even though the hotel was booked in my name, he only spoke to my husband. He asked a question and I answered and then he would say something else to my husband again (without acknowledging me). It was like I had gone back to a time where women were second class citizens! He also gave incorrect information for accessing the wifi. We chose the smallest room, and it was a bit too small for us, but fine and nicely appointed. My husband spent a good amount of time relaxing with a book on the patio, so that worked out well. The nearby pool was busy but no one was noisy, as the hotel caters to an older crowd. Breakfast was good, but no one explained that eggs can be made to order, and who you place your order with. Also, not all of the waitstaff speak adequate English. I had an indecent where I asked for soy milk for my coffee but I was given cream. As I am severely lactose intolerant, and this could have made for a very unpleasant couple of days had my husband not noticed it didn't look right. I thought this was a huge error on the hotel's part, and a bit more could have been done to rectify the situation. The bar staff could also use more customer service training. I asked for soy milk for my cappuccino only to be told he didn't have any. I said I got it at breakfast so he asked another member of staff. She told him to look in the refrigerator (that he was standing in front of) and sure enough there was some in it! Also when I placed my order he didn't say anything as to whether I needed to wait or if he would bring it to me. When we were leaving we had to wait a very long time for our car. The woman working the front desk kept giving the valet the wrong room number over the radio, which I finally caught onto. Also, the car was parked at their other lot so this took extra time. The location of the hotel is great, but there is another hotel directly across the street that might be just as nice and not have the same staffing issues. Next time I go to Stellenbosch I think I will try it instead.
"Very Disappointing "
I travel extensively for business and pleasure both in Europe and South Africa I have nothing positive to say about OudeWerf Hotel at all. The service from reception to waitresses to housekeeping has been appalling. Disinterested, rude and slow - not great when you are trying to please customers. Wifi - poor Rooms - average at best Location is excellent if you want the heart of Stellenbosch Pool area - small and clearly not adequate for the number of guests No turndown service, no water in the room, leaking bath that wasn't fixed - the list goes on!
"Short but sweet"
Stellenbosch is a beautiful place but we were only passing through and stayed just one night at the Oude Werf Hotel which is centrally located and the valet parking is a definite bonus. Nice room, very small balcony overlooking swimming pool area which happened to be particularly noisy the night we were there. We eat elsewhere but the breakfast was as good as anywhere else we have stayed. We would happily return.
