Cairns is een ideaal begin- of eindpunt van uw rondreis Australië. Er heerst hier een gezellige atmosfeer. Langs de boulevard zijn er namelijk verschillende bars en restaurants te vinden, en ook aan winkels is geen gebrek.
"Island Escape "
Great fish life. Great coral. Island very nice, but in general the staff and the business side of the resort seemed a little tired. By contrast the main restaurant was fantastic, both the menu and the friendly staff. The pub had very poor menus and run down. Food on the whole was quite expensive on the Island. The grocery store is poorly stocked and expensive! The accommodation was nice, but needs upkeep. Good place for couples and families. Make sure you take basic food and snacks with you and you will save a fortune.
"Beautiful Island, disappointing resort"
My partner and I have just got back from 5 nights here on a scoopon deal. Fitzroy Island is beautiful and serene with plenty of activities to do like snorkelling, kayaking and paddle boarding. I would highly recommend hiring a stinger suit as there are plenty of dangerous jellyfish in the water. I still can't believe how many people were swimming without stinger suits despite all the warnings and people only being stung a few weeks earlier. The resort itself was a total letdown, We were sceptical about staying here as the reviews are very mixed. We stayed in a resort studio, it was a good size but the room had a very distinct and awful mould/rainforest smell that has still lingered on our clothes after we have returned. It was very hot when we were at the hotel so we had the aircon on the whole time with all the blinds closed as most of the rooms back onto a communal walkway so there is no privacy. This being said, there is no way for natural light to enter your room unless you want everyone walking past to look into your room. On our second night we were inundated with ants up the walls and cockroaches in the shower, I think they were coming up the drain. On the fourth night after some rain we were also inundated with midges and mosquitos to the point that we were both covered in bites and up all evening trying to kill them all. Foxys restaurant is okay, the food never changes so after a few nights the same food for lunch and dinner just gets very boring. It averages $50-$60 for 2 meals and a drink. Zephyr restaurant for breakfast is okay, glad that it was included in our deal as I would not pay $30 each for a buffet breakfast. Zephyr and Foxys alternate nights for dinner with Zephyr having a much more 'upmarket' menu - $45 for an ordinary eye fillet and $42 for fish of the day, which was supposed to be coral trout, really still think it was a much cheaper fish advertised as something else. Overall, the island is beautiful but I wouldn't waste money staying at the resort or the camping ground. The camping ground looks very ordinary and dirty. The staff at the resort are mostly unfriendly, we only saw a very select few who returned out good mornings and smiles. They all seem very unhappy and unsatisfied with their jobs.
Met my Fly in Fly out Hubby in Cairns with our youngest... Wet Season... We knew that... Hardly a sprinkle!!! It has been hotter down here -I'm from Brissy... Weather was absolutely AWESOME! Vis was clear - boys loved the full day snorkel Reef.../ food adventure... Lovely glass bottom boat with snorkeling just off of the island (not deep water) Can't remember guide's name,,, but he was lovely... My Hubby was amazed at the view! He's a diver and did not expect to see anything off the island direct.. It's a coral island, so don't expect sandy beaches... there is however some sandier beaches round the walk.... National Park so lots of rainforest... you can camp as well... We stayed in a cabin on the beach. Quite nice... Staff were mostly good - some a bit vague... I had to ask twice where and how to get to our accommodation. "down the track and to the left" kinda doesn't cut it??? Turtle sanctuary is a good information session and guide was wonderful! As it is stinger season, we mainly stayed in the pool with the bar.... :) Met some lovely ladies from Melbourne with whom we played quiz night and cleaned up!!!! Food... Resort food... Same...Same... All up! Great time. Would go back again!!!
"Great Holiday in Cairns"
My partner and I stayed at Fitzroy Island Resort in November 2015. We had a great time! The location is beautiful. We stayed in a private room equipped with lounge room, full kitchen, bathroom (including a HUGE shower) and bedroom with king size bed. I would suggest to stay on the island NO LONGER than 3 days. It takes a 45 minute fast cat to get to Fitzroy Island and there is not much on the island itself. There are only 2 places to eat (the bar and a restaurant) and the food was not very nice and extremely expensive. I would advise anyone staying there for long periods of time to take an esky with their own food. We made the mistake of staying for 6 days and on the 3rd day we ended up taking the ferry back to Cairns just so we could get groceries. The pool bar was nice however the cocktails were only served from the pool bar for a few hours (I think from 4pm-7pm?). I wished this was open longer as the cocktails were amazing! Another thing that frustrated us was that there was only one pool and it wasn't huge so there were alot of screaming kids splashing about. Maybe having an adults area only would be a good idea. Also not so much fun when it's raining. Not many activities to do when it's cold or when it is raining and the TV kept cutting out during thunderstorms. We loved our snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef. What an amazing experience. I would definitely return to Fitzroy Island, but maybe as a day trip rather than a stay.
"Nice island... overpriced resort..."
all in all we enjoyed our stay. the island is lovely and the staff were super friendly. that being said... the golden rule of economics must be remembered before coming here (caveat emptor/let the buyer beware). lets start with the room. the room was nice to look at, however had a mild odor in it. very little to no natural sunlight gets in due to the way it's built. the windows might as well be open because even shut offer no sound barrier (as in anything from outside can be heard). we had an issue with the ac, and that was looked into promptly (thank you). there were some oddities with how the housecleaning was done... they replaced the towels even though they weren't dumped on the floor (to abide by the environmental reasons they listed), however they didn't change the used glassware (they did replace the teas and sugars so they new they were used) until we asked at the reception. on to the restaurants... the only paid breakfast option is at their "fine" dining restaurant, zephyr. breakfast goes at 20$ for an adult for a Continental breakfast... 30$ for the hot buffet. seriously that's pretty inflated and messed up in our minds. to avoid that gouge we came with breakfast food that would keep in the mini fridge because there was no way we were going to let them extort us for that. they have another resto/pub (foxy's) that's open for lunches with typical pub food and average prices (18$-30$ for mains) (way better than zephyr). that being said, foxy's isn't open every night for dinner, and is seemingly changed on a whim (we arrived on a Tuesday and it was closed and had a sign saying it was closed every second night, and that was changed the next day to say it was open every night). we both enjoyed the staff and service at foxy's, and the chef there did well to help with allergy concerns (thanks). we didn't bother trying to have a dinner at zephyr (30-50$ for a main, 80$ for the table d'hôte). we did share an appy, it was fine, but nothing to write home about. the service, however friendly, were slow and inefficient, and less than half the tables were occupied (30 mins for a tea? get real). one last thing in regards to zephyr, we never once heard anything positive from other guests, which further added to our refusal to have a main there. anything else anyone wants to do on the island (except old free movies), activity wise, they will have to pay for... nothing is included. this includes boat tours, snorkel/fins, stinger suits, etc. we did hire some stinger suits and we were happy with the condition and quality they were in. we also booked a night boat tour, and appreciated the candor of the guide. he advised to cancel for a refund because the weather conditions were terrible and it wouldn't be worth it. they refunded us without an issue (50$ for two adults for a 45 min night tour of reef). again, the staff here have been super, their dive center is no exception. all in all, we enjoyed ourselves, but we also came prepared with food because of their ambitious costs, else we would have spent equal to the room cost for 3 nights on food. that being said, I don't think we'd choose to return here unless they come back down to earth and make costs more reasonable, and could be trusted to not flip flop on when their restaurants are open or not (it could catch an unwary traveller off guard). thanks for reading this novel, we just wanted to be precise and fair, and ensure that any future guests know what they can be in for.
