Cairns is een ideaal begin- of eindpunt van uw rondreis Australië. Er heerst hier een gezellige atmosfeer. Langs de boulevard zijn er namelijk verschillende bars en restaurants te vinden, en ook aan winkels is geen gebrek.

"Love this place"

Loved this place so much after a day trip I'm going back for a week! Literally two steps off the beach there are fish. I saw reef sharks, huge parrot fish etc There is a really cool bar right on the beach and yes you might have to wait to get served but after a week in FNQ waiting seemed to be part of the norm. Only negative I found was the dive shop, disorganised which wasted a good 1/2 hour of our time. The serving us were very rude and made you feel like you were bothering them. Next time I'll take my own gear so I can avoid the one negative .

"Great island and good resort!"

Fitzroy Island is 95% natural reserve and 5% resort. The trip out there on the Fitzroy Flyer was great. They take your luggage on board and offload other end so it's waiting for you after you check in. Once on the island our 2 rooms were ready early which was lucky. We had an ocean view suite with full kitchen, fridge, oven, cooktop and a resort room for our teenage kids which is basic room and bathroom. The Ocean view room was lovely looking out onto the reef with plenty of light. However the resort room is very dark with only one window onto public walkway. The rooms were clean when we arrived but then only get a tidy up each day and not a full clean so the floors were gritty by the end. The island is tropical and very green. The beachfront is rough coral in most parts so recommended walking in reef shoes or thongs. The snorkelling was excellent and the fish was abundant and varied. We snorkelled for 3 days and everyday was different. We hired stinger suits and fins for 3 days through the Dive Centre and Adrian was very helpful. We also did the 10am glass bottom boat tour which includes snorkelling from Shark Bay straight off the boat. This was amazing and the coral was fantastic. There are several rainforest walks that are great if you love nature. Secret Garden walk and the walk to Nudey Beach also Lighthouse and Summit. The highlight of the trip was swimming with sea turtles on 2 of the days. Not everyone is lucky enough to see them in natural environment but we saw them straight out about 30 metres from the beach at the turtle rehabilitation centre. Also a must is the turtle rehabilitation tour for $8.80 per adult. This money goes towards looking after sick turtles and the tour of 45 minutes was so great thanks to Jen and Azri!!! We found the resort staff on Fitzroy all helpful and friendly. Drinks at Foxy's were refreshing but the food was average pub fare. We knew to bring our own breakfast items bread, milk & cereal and lunch stuff and some dinner stuff so we only went to Foxy's one night. The store sells some food items but dearer than in Cairns. If your fussy about drinking water then I suggest you bring bottled water as the island has untreated freshwater!!! All in all a fabulous time and I thoroughly recommend it for the snorkelling and for the islands natural beauty. We hope to come back one day!!!!!

"Relaxing Aussie Island"

This was our second stay at Fitzroy so we new what to expect. We had a one bedroom suite and our two boys slept on the fold out couch. The room was clean and spacious and the air conditioning and fans worked well. We only ate at Foxy's on this trip as the other restaurant was a la carte with a small menu that did not suite our tastes or budget. I can't remember exactly what was on the menu, but we don't like seafood, which limits our choice. We enjoyed our meals at Foxy's - tasty and generous. The view through the trees to the ocean with the boats moored was lovely. The music and setting was laid back and relaxing. We stayed four nights and the menu worked for us. We made our own breakfast in the kitchen in our room. On a previous stay at Fitzroy we ate at the fancier restaurant and had a buffet. It was expensive, but worth it for the vegetables and fruit in particular.Plus it was a lovely setting. We took food from the mainland. It is hard to get fruit and veges on the island and we learnt that after our first trip. We did plenty of walking and enjoyed seeing and hearing all the birds. We saw the biggest ever stick insect. Our children loved the pool. On a previous trip we went to see the Turtle rescue area. This time we snorkeled off the beach with two turtles who were munching on sea grass oblivious to us, We had full wet suits as it was the end of stinger season. It was great being able to wash our clothes in the guest laundry. The only real negative was not having Wifi in our room and not being able to get it around the resort either. Although this did mean we read! We finally realised/decided to get wifi through our phone. It was a shame we did not do this at the start of our Australian trip! It pays to check these things out - I have learnt.

We were (unbeknown to us) booked into a room at the back of the resort that faced the walkway so everyone could look straight into your room, privacy was only achieved by closing both sets of curtains which meant we could not have fresh air only air con and all the lights had to always be on so we had light, hideous. The bed was the worst we have ever slept on (we tried it out as u do when u first arrive and realised it was terrible) anywhere in the world, the ceiling fan was all corroded, there was a rusty door frame into the bathroom, a loose floor tile, the bedside lamp was held together by duct tape and the floor was filthy! We asked for an immediate change of room as soon as we saw it and the reception said they were fully booked and the only free room was being painted. We then went straight to reception to see if we could get more assistance and another mattress at least but to no avail. So we tried to cancel our second nights accomodation and that breakfast and we were told that cud not b done as we had to give 72 hours notice, our argument of course was that we did not know how terrible it was until we had checked in, therefore had no reason to cancel.! We left the next morning after changing our ferry a day early and making the departure earlier also & upon checking out reception again confirmed there was no way we cud get a refund. We met two women who had to wait (after checking out at 10) for there ferry to arrive in 7 hours. There is NO common area that has a tv or aircon for guests so as we were told we had to pay anyway even though we were leaving 24 hours early and not having the breakfast we decided to do the right thing and offered our room for them to watch some tv in air con to help pass their time. When we checked out our bill came to $361 so we thought the resort may have done the right thing by us. Back at cairns we checked our account and they had charged us twice the same amount so we called to discuss this and was told that was not showing at their end and to just wait a cpl days to see what actually went through so we did that, Two days later we looked again to find only one had gone through however there was another charge of $235, upon calling the resort they confirmed this was for he second nights accomodation and breakfast which they said apparently we had agreed too pay (this was and is not the case) several emails to booking.com (who said they wud have refunded us) and several emails showing the room etc and we are still no where to getting any form of refund. Please copy and paste this everywhere and share.! Power to the little people & let them all know that Fitzroy island resort is terrible (unless u don't care about hygiene, comfort & maintenance & want to just get trashed) NOT to go there

"Very relaxed"

Fitzroy island is great to get away and chill for family time. The kids loved the water trampoline and paddle boarding (additional cost) The rooms are ok comfortable but could do with some maintamce and a good clean. Foxy's bar is a great place for relaxed meals and the sunset is one of the best I have seen. We did a Reef snorkelling day trip which was lots of fun. The coral beach is pretty and Nudey Beach is breathtaking. The staff were friendly overall we had a great very relaxing few days.
