"The perfect place to wind down our honeymoon "
This place is a must if you are in northern Queensland. Having spent 3 weeks travelling around in great weather we were nervous to head here as our last stop in our honeymoon. How we need not have troubled ourselves. It is just over an hour from Cairns, and you feel like you are miles from anything. He photos do not do it justice. It is simply breathtaking. The warmest and most genuine greeting of our trip from Peter, with a delicious cocktail overlooking the river; whilst high up in the trees, was a great start. He suggested this was the perfect place for us to wind down - no wifi in rooms, no Tv in room, lots of lovely board games and books on the area, a swim in the billabong, a hike.... whatever we fancied. We were pleased we swam and canoed on the first day as that evening there was the most incredible downpour - having worried about rain we are so pleased we had some, it is a rainforest after all - and the river was out of bounds the next day. We took a hike the next day to Fig Tree Rapids which was challenging as it was still very wet, and the path not so obvious in places, but the little guide book they give you kept us on track. Really worth doing and we glad we experienced this rather than going into town. Do heed their warning of wearing decent footwear- at times it is quite treacherous. There is the option to bring a picnic with you also which the lodge will prepare, but we were so stuffed from a delicious breakfast that we didn't do so. There is a salt water pool near the main lodge so we lay there after the walk under the dappled light and swigged down a much deserved beer. The food is very good. We ate there both evenings and Paul the sommelier has an excellent knowledge of Australian wines so we partook in a few bottles over our stay. Our room was wonderful, number 27 with a day bed on the balcony, well maintained, comfy bed and nice touches of excellent coffee and big cups. All felt very homely. The service is excellent across the property, we are so pleased we came up here and would return here next time we come to Australia. Top notch.
"In the heart of the rainforest "
A fantastic hotel where you can enjoy good food and the rainforest. Beautiful tree houses and friendly staff, love the hammock on the balcony! I only gave it 4 out of 5 because there was no mini bar and the delivery charge for room service was $25.00!
"Tranquil spot under the canopy"
After 35 hours travel time from the United States, we arrived at Silky Oaks and were greeted warmly by Peter with a tour of the lodge and refreshing cocktail. We were busy with tours during the full two days we were at the lodge, but ate each breakfast and dinner at the lodge which were wonderful! We spent time lounging in the "family room", used the laundry facilities after a dusty ATV trip, and swam in the pool. Both Lashane in the restaurant and Paul in the bar were extremely helpful and made our experience even better. The rooms were beautiful and such a wonderful introduction to Australia. When we came back from dinner the first night all of the lanterns and candles were all lit in the room and patio and it was incredibly romantic. We had a wonderful time in the rainforest and would definitely recommend a stay at Silky Oaks.
"Fantastic venue, food good"
We used to go to Silky Oaks Restaurant with our kids 15-20 years ago, on a regular basis. Now they are grown up and we visited again with our daughter and her husband. The venue doesn't appeared to have aged, it is gorgeous, in fact even nicer than when we used to go there. The food however has changed, the lunch menu was great, hard to decide what to have. I love Coral Trout so I had the trout with Asian slaw and macadamias - didnt realize Asian slaw consisted of strips of capsicum and little else. No macadamias but the fish was good. My husband had the chicken curry - that was nice too. I think my daughter had the pick of them with a pasta. A very enjoyable meal all up.
"Pleasent place to stay - unique settting but with some admin glitches"
We booked Silly Oaks after a friend's recommendation. The setting by the Mossman River looked idyllic. Pre-stay the hotel were helpful with queries. The part that didn't go well was our arrival - we arrived soon after the stipulated check-in time and after a long walk around the nearby Mossman Gorge were looking forward to a quick check in and some time to relax. For this grade of hotel and price I really expect the check in times to be adhered to. We were 'checked in' and provided with a welcome drink but then left sitting for ages by the terrace above river. When I went back to enquire the reception staff were evasive and were not able to provide a time for check-in. At this point I asked to speak to the manager who to be fair appeared quickly. Miraculously the room then became ready very quickly and to be fair the manager was charming and provided us with a complementary bottle of wine and choice of dining room table for dinner. The grading for the hotel would have been excellent had it not been for this unprofessional start. We stayed for two nights in a room in the garden. The room was lovely but a long way from the reception, bar and main guest area. That wasn't a great problem though and it meant our room was quiet and we saw some interesting wildlife walking at night (a tiny marsupial one evening). The room was spacious and very comfortable with a hammock on the balcony. Dinner and breakfast were excellent and the staff very helpful and friendly. The view over the river at breakfast was stunning. We also swam in the billabong which was great with a snorkel - if not a tiny bit bracing! Overall the setting was a real experience. We also took the hotel's day safari up to Cape Tribulation with Chris which I'd really recommend. He has a real love and knowledge of the wildlife and flora of the area. This made it a real highlight of our trip around Australia.
