"Authentic and scenic "

   25-02-2017
We recently made our first visit to N Australia and were recommended Thala in favour of other better known properties in Port Douglas and the Danetree Forest. The pluses outweigh the minus's - location, setting and authentic pool area were slightly let down by tired accommodation and a generally efficient, certainly knowledgeable but not overly welcoming or relaxed staff. The scenic restaurant needs to widen its menu to include simpler dishes (grills and other ungarnished and local specialities). A visit to this region is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity and we maximised our time in the area and Thala was a welcome watering hole - but for those expecting 21st century 5 star modernity and related conveniences - you almost get them - Give it a try but manage your expectations

"Romantic getaway"

   24-02-2017
We spent 3 nights in this magical place. The settings are spectacular, the scenery, nature, surrounding and serenity are just inviting to reenergise and bring romance back to your relationship. The downside, it is on top of a hill....literally which means that in order to get anywhere you will have to put your fitness to the test. Going up and down hills (walkways but uphill regardless) may take its toll on your fitness and energy after a few days. There's no escape, going to the beach, restaurant take a good 10 minute workout. Good or bad?your call. The rooms are superb especially those with a view but the mattresses are well overdue for a change....way too soft. If you are after a firm type of mattress you may want to consider this as your back will remind you of your choice in the morning. The restaurant is superb, not cheap but you get good quality food with awesome flavours and a magnificent view. Be mindful that the beach has no nets, so no swimming in the ocean from November to May. The place is probably not suitable for little kids...see my comment on walking uphill continuously...but perfect hidden gem for couples not too far from Port Douglas.

"Gorgeous"

Lovely little huts on stilts overlooking forest - good for bird and animal watching. Restaurant offers very good food with attentive service. Pity there is no spa but swimming pool is very good and enclosed by trees.

"Fourth visit and champing at the bit for the fifth"

   19-02-2017
There are some truly special places that I have visited in my life - and this is one of them. Unlike some of the others which are in remote locations or difficult to access or simply far away, this one is right on my doorstep (well, relatively, given the size of this country) and relatively easy to get to. One of the most difficult things for a resort to offer to a guest who has had an outstanding experience is consistency in subsequent visits. But Thala Beach Resort is just that - 100% consistent in the quality of the accommodation, the maintenance of the grounds, the wonderful staff, the food and the overall experience. This visit took place in December so no swimming at the beach, but the pools were lovely, as they always are, and this time I did venture into them. As is to be expected at this time of year, it was hot and humid. Based on my experience of previous visits, I went armed with various forms of insect repellent and much to my surprise didn't need to use it! Even though the General Manager was away at the time, the staff was as its usual high standard with his deputies manning the decks as superbly as ever. As i have said before, this is not a 5 star luxury resort and certainly not one to "take the kids" to. But it does not set out to be and therein lies its beauty. It is in a natural setting, making the most of the stunning coastline it abuts and the splendid forest that has grown up on the grounds. Walking along the paths is a treat, even in the humidity and the rain. The cabins blend in beautifully with their surroundings and are immaculately clean and nicely appointed - and include comfortable chairs to lounge in. Although it is easy to participate in many organised tours of the area, including visits to the Great Barrier Reef and other nearby attractions, for me the best thing a visitor to Thala Beach Lodge can do is to stay on site and RELAX. Sitting on the beach and watching the waves, with a book to hand, walking along the pristine Oak Beach, watching the forest from the balcony of the cabin and enjoying a very good meal in the simply styled open air dining room (with one of Ray's special cocktails as a before dinner treat, or the yummy coconut cocktail), walking through the resort at night with its tasteful lighting after a lovely dinner, spotting the various wildlife visitors that pop up around the place, listening to the muffled sound of the ocean as I drift off to sleep and just chatting to the staff who feel as passionate about the resort as I do (including Klaus from Maintenance who is a legend) - these are the things that have made my four visits so memorable. As always, a huge thank you to all, and particularly to Diana for returning my keys to me when I stupidly left them in a drawer in the cabin. I am indeed, champing at the bit for a 5th visit in 2017. Look out folks, I'm coming back!

"Thala Nature Reserve- A Pristine Paradise"

   19-02-2017
Thala Beach Nature Reserve was honestly one of the most beautiful places I have seen! The cabins were comfortable inside with all modern amenities although situated incredibly close to nature. We loved the swimming pools surrounded by rocks and palm trees, the delicious meals in the dining terrace overlooking the South Pacific Ocean, and the breathtakingly beautiful walk to the ocean. The food was all fresh and elegantly prepared and presented and featured local tropical fruits and seafood. One night, we enjoyed a delicious dinner served by a French woman named Megan on the restaurant patio, which overlooked the South Pacific Ocean. Julian ordered crispy chicken wontons on a housemate chutney of sweet and sour pumpkin and tamarind with a small Asian salad and freshly grated plantation coconut followed by a Mareeba Mango Mousse with pineapple compote, passion fruit, banana sand, blue curaçao jelly, cacao tuille, coconut sorbet and candy chile. while I ate a steamed barramundi (local Australian fish) infused with flavors from Thalia’s garden wrapped in rice paper and served with crispy plantation coconut rice, broccoli, peanuts, cholo and sweet potato and carrot puree. The next evening, dinner was equally lovely, consisting of more local fresh fish dishes. This time I chose the special of the Pan Fried Reef fish accompanied by cucumber salad with organic yogurt dressing while Julian enjoyed a Pan- seared line- caught yellow fin tuna served rare while crusted with same seed and Japanese seven pepper, which was served with an organic saba noodle salad with wasabi cream. For dessert, Julian chose the chocolate peanut parfait with caramel sauce served with chocolate soil, candy peanuts and coconut while I selected the tropical fruit medley with mango sorbet for dessert. I was pleased to have the opportunity to try dragon fruit for the first time. Coconut, melons (watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew), pineapple, kiwi, apple, grapes and passionfruit were also on my plate. We also enjoyed a delicious buffet breakfast featuring local tropical fruits in season, which we enjoyed while looking over the South Pacific Ocean. The staff were all remarkably friendly and helpful. We were greeted by a very friendly woman named Rose and were even were treated to a complimentary nonalcoholic beverage upon arrival! My college-aged son and I enjoyed our stay so much but it would also be a perfect spot for honeymooners. It is conveniently located to all of the tourist attractions in Port Douglass. However, Thala Beach Nature Reserve is a destination in itself. It is the perfect spot for rest and rejuvenation. I am looking forward to coming back again and telling all my friends about Thala in the meantime.
