"Outstanding - a great way to connect nature with comfort"

We spent 3 nights at Thala and can honestly say that it was one of the finest overall experiences we've had. We travel a lot and are fussy when it comes to accommodation choice. We were pleased we chose Thala - the service was excellent with friendly and welcoming staff, the bungalow was very comfortable with a rustic flavour, the main pool was a great temperature after a hot day, there's plenty of birds and other wildlife and the views are a treat. We were upgraded to a Coral Sea Bungalow upon arrival and that kicked off the experience very well. We ate at Osprey's for lunch and dinner and were impressed by the quality and portions. The tuna was a standout! We did a nature walk and went to a cultural talk and that was wonderful to learn about the local area and customs. Yes, there are hills to accommodate but it's nice to get the heart rate up! We are avid nature lovers and for us, the ability to stay amongst the beautiful trees whilst looking out over the water is special. It helps to have your own car if you want to be flexible and head into Pt Douglas for a meal as the property is located about 15 minutes drive away. We didn't use the lodge's shuttle. During March it is low season so we were lucky that there were not a lot of people around the main pool. During the peak season it may be harder to get a spot as the area is not huge. There is a smaller rock pool as well but only a handful of people would be able to be in there at once. If there was scope to build a pool down near the beachfront we feel this would be a wonderful addition to provide greater space for a swim and sun lounge spot. All up, this was a brilliant stay and our aim is definitely to return! Thanks to Johan and all the team.

My visit to Thala was a special surprise breakfast. The view and the dining room is really good. We have many places in Cairns with views like this. The breakfast was underwhelming, my poached eggs were still swimming in water. Didn't realize toast wouldn't be served and so time spent cooking it my breakfast was cold. The ladies room was disgusting. Not cleaned at all.

"Tranquility and keeping fit"

My wife and I visited Feb 2017 which is off season and found ourselves upgraded to the eucalyptus apartment from the forest booking. Pleasant surprise. No hustle and bustle at this time of year. Quite humid but the room had quiet airconditioning and was immaculate. Thala is built on a short peninsular with the main reception/lounges etc on top of the ridge with the bungalows dotted around in the bush spreading downhill. I recommend having your own car having the flexibility to eat elsewhere and do side trips. Thala provide a shuttle $10 per person each way to go to Port Douglas 20 minutes North. They have regular free activities and we enjoyed the Nature walk around the property, the star gazing on a clear evening and an Aboriginal Culture talk with didgeridoo demo. The staff bend over backwards to assist. They will park your car down the hill in the spacious car park and drive you to and from your bungalow if you feel too puffed to walk the steep paths. The beaches are not really attractive and swimming from Dec to April is off limits because of the box jelly fish and crocodiles. So that just leaves the pool which is great. The steepness of the paths from bungalows (especially the forest ones) to breakfast etc is their Achilles heel and they do everything possible to overcome this with 24/7 electric cart service. Being "old school" I don't want to make a fuss and bother them for a lift so I say to myself after panting at the top for a rest saying "this exercise is good for me"!

"Beautiful paradise"

The perfect place to escape the frantic pace of modern living. The hotel is a stunning open building reminiscent of Thai or African teak structures. Being on a headland the double aspect is maximised by the restaurant looking out to one side - coast, sea and sky and the bar seating area set on the other with a different vista of coast sea and sky. The individual wooden chalets are charming and spacious with their own balconies and bathrooms. Dinner was excellent with an Asian fusion approach which perfectly complemented the local fish. The swimming pool is relaxing - not for single lane swimmers but for lazing by and dipping in - with a drink from the bar. Wildlife abounds on the large property and along its coastline. Turtles are seen regularly, the bird life is amazing with rainbow lorikeets in the trees accompanying our big buffet breakfast each day. Helmeted friarbirds can be seen too and other creatures such as wallabies are around. Wifi is available in the common areas but can be a bit fickle. Staff are friendly and accommodating but not intrusive - they all make you feel that they are there to help you enjoy the hotel and local area as much as possible. Nothing is too much trouble. Recommended for anyone wanting more than just a day or two on the Barrier Reef. This is an eco-friendly destination in its own right.

"love these Bungalows"

This was beautiful .... the stay was very relaxing and the golf cart young man was the best! he picked us up always to carry us to the main building... never had to wait! Units are clean, come with a coffee press, ( nice touch) Swimming pools are amazing..... The only drawback is the restaurant....staff is a bit snobby..... price are very expensive.... no I dont want to pay 80$ for 2 for breakfast .... and dinner was just as costly ... When one travels Australia for 3 weeks, we are not looking at shelling out 150$ for dinner overnight.... so in that respect.... your very stuck there when it comes to eating.... there are no reastaunts near by.... unless your are willing to drive 25 min....realize that they offer no normal dinning.... not for Breakfast or lunch, or dinner..funny how the retaurant was snobby, and when i ordered a salad , they had an attitude....
