Over The Menzies Sydney

"Nothing great but if location is your priority ..."

This is a continuation of my review on Meriton in Bondi Jn. Due to lack of availability of apartments my colleague and me had to move out of there a couple of days after having checked in. While we were worried about where we would stay, my colleague suggested we take a look at Menzies as it was right outside the Wynyard stn from where we took a train back to Bondi. We were lucky that we found a room which was fairly large but 2 of us had to manage in one room due to budgetary constraints. The hotel in itself is ok, the lobby is great , however the room was pretty mediocre. The beds were comfy alright, however the loo was pretty pathetic. Made me feel very claustrophobic in there. I had a request for a microwave so I could microwave my Indian ready to eat stuff, however this request was politely declined. Im not sure why - but this didn't make me feel good. Location-wise great location, right outside Wynyard, 2 streets away from Martin place, very close walk to Darling Harbour. I mean what more. The outside is great but the rooms in itself are poor. I found used plates and cutlery outside rooms which was not cleared out by housekeeping. I mean no. If you got the money to spend for the location this is alright , but there are way better choices than this. Go for it if location is priority and you have the money to spend on mediocrity.

"Tired and needs some care"

The day before arrival the hotel experienced water flooding and the main lift well was unusable and I suspect that had caused some confusion as service problems. However to walk to my room past food spills in the corridor from room service and for them to still be there over twelve hours later is unacceptable. Room quite comfortable but showing its age. Reception understaffed but courteous.

"A Nightmare"

This hotel is very tired and we were told that they are closing at the end of this month. (October 2016). In spite of this, the staff seem to be hanging in there and the breakfast buffet was good. The location was great. This is where the good story ends. At 1:30 A.M., the fire alarm went off on our floor and we evacuated. Water was pouring into the street and we were told that the problem was a leak and not a fire. We were escorted up the stairwell back to our rooms. Once in my room, I could hear the water pouring through the air vent and it started coming through the light fixture into my bathroom. I got my things together, ready for a quick exit and then fell back asleep about two hours later. When I awoke, the water leak had been stopped, but the halls and stairwells were soaked. The staff was busy trying to clean things up, but many of them didn't even know what had occurred. The next night, the same thing happened, minus the fire alarm. Water was pouring through the air vents and leaking into my bathroom through the light fixture. My hall carpet was soaked. I left that morning, The staff said it was a leak on the roof. I am not sure what was going on there, but I can only guess that there is going to be a mold issue and a tremendous amount of damage. I would not stay there again. Since the hotel is closing, I guess that will be a moot point.

"Unsatisfactory for cost"

This hotel is old, the main lifts were out all week, meaning a walk to get to other lift bank and then a flight of stairs tonroom. Room is ok but no minibar or even a bottle of water in room. In room dining options limited and average. Whilst location is good, that's all you're paying for.

"Menzies in Sydney"

Good location positioned next to the Wynard train station in the CBD. However the hotel is a bit dated . Our room suffered from a curtain that leaked a lot of light - it needed to be wider to block the morning light. The shower over the bath also suffered from the lack of a seal at the bottom of the glass. This resulted in water all over the bathroom floor.
