"Great effort back on track"

   27-05-2017
The Hamilton Island team should be congratulated for working so hard to get things back on track so soon after Cyclone Debbie. The vegetation is a little sorry and it seems much private accommodation is still off line but the core of the resort, pools and attractions are all business as usual (at least to the guest). Their biggest challenge now is to convince guests who get cross that the ATV tours aren't working or a couple of shops are out of action, that Debbie was as bad as it was. Well done again thanks for a lovely stay. GO THERE PEOPLE

"A rain full week !!"

   27-05-2017
We visited Hamilton Island May 2017... & it rained non stop all week !!!! However we did the Blue bus Island trip, visited the marina, saw Whitehaven Beach in the pouring rain, & did the helicopter trip over the reef. The Island is recovering from the devastating storm damage from the recent cyclone, & doing it bravely. They need visitors & we had a relaxing week, even although it rained every day. The hotel was very comfortable, neat, clean & tidy & we spent ( unfortunately) much time in our room, due to the rain. Our major criticism, was the lady who was trying to seat people for breakfast.... yes we know the hotel was full with people diverted from the apartments & other accommodation, but she " faffed" around trying to seat people when there were many spare places all over the dinning area..... This really needs attention.. as there was no need for the long queues for breakfast.!!!!!!! apart from this the hotel was really good. Our other criticism, was a personal one, in that it is a pity that an island like Hamilton has 20 story hotels & 6 story apartment blocks that don't fit in with the idea of an "Island" retreat. I think the architecture could have blended better into the surrounding ambience.

"Not quite as expected"

   24-05-2017
Hamilton is a beautiful Pacific island that has been recently badly damamaged by a cyclone from which the vegetation is recovering faster than the tourist industry. The Reef Hotel is a large high rise modern block. It looks a little out of place in its surroundings. The staff were pleasant and friendly but a bit disorganised. The hotel complex has a package holiday resort feel. a number of the restaurants on the island were still closed or had few spaces, but those that were open had a good selection and standard of food. The beach club hotel looked more in keeping but there were still limited dining options. The weather was still unpredictable and rainy and so the beach and snorkelling options were also limited. the tour guides were doing their best in l the circumstances ,but we cancelled our trip to the Reef because of choppy seas and poor visibility in the water

"Disappoint Experience "

   24-05-2017
We were stay at Reef View hotel at May for two nights Very agree with couple of other comment in here. Area is nice ,relax and beautiful, good experience for rental Golf buggy Room condition is average but the hotel service I won't agree and very disappoint the service and feel really over price which I can find more another place for enjoy the vacation. Hotel reservation team was not professional enough ,back and forth email to ask our reservation details and keep mention the booking was cancel. Arrival experience terrible, front desk staff check in not Friendly and very rush for job (may be busy?)luggage delivery time unacceptable, take 45 mins still not able to sent to our room and eventually I went down to take the bag by myself without any assistant(Staff didn't feel any issue) Asked king size bed but not apply and requested to change room but ignore.(only twin bed available) Asked few times of the opener request, staff didn't delivery at all ,very not respect the guest. Check out staff much better may be she came by working visa. Again ,overall feeling below the expectation and disappointed. I have share my feedback by email, however they not reply in timely manner (at least few days to reply),Very simple apology only and NO recovery offer for us. I know that's the basic of hotel should do and that's the key how to turn around guest experience.

"The Great Hamilton Island Saga (Pt 1)"

   21-05-2017
Please see my other reviews for the rest of this meandering tale. ------ The in-laws came to visit from the US and wanted to see the great barrier reef, so we booked in for a weekend at Hamilton Island. The place did just recover from a massive cyclone (in April), so let's keep that in mind. It appears that the entire island is very much geared towards families who don't believe in disciplining their kids and boring white people on their honeymoon. So if you're looking for anything more exciting than a kayak, I'd recommend elsewhere. As an aside, the golf buggies available for rental have GPS monitoring speed limiting. Just think about the logistics that go into using satellites to stop tourists from driving electric golf vehicles above the pace of a light jog. Anyways, the hotel. So it's got that Jurassic Park resort feel to it, sans dinosaurs. Everything is very structured and organised. The room was huge and the views are great. I will note that this entire hotel desperately needs a renovation as it currently feels very 1993 (the year Jurassic park came out). The wifi really sucks (much like it did in 1993) and there's buffets everywhere, but really average buffets (again, very 1993). I actually remember thinking how sick these buffets were when I was about 9, before I understood concepts around flavour and variety. So here's what really grinds my gears; the place is set up to basically be as annoying as possible and extract as much money from you as possible. For example, there's only 2 places we could find on the entire island that weren't breakfast buffets. Want an omelette? Too bad bozo, $35 for a buffet or room service. The buffets are also the classic "family resort" quality over quality offering. Again, at dinner time the resorts only offer buffet dining. You need to go over to the marina if you want a la carte. More like "A la Cartel!". This seems reflective of a general lack of awareness of current trends around food, lifestyle and holiday behaviours in 2017. Though they're certainly keenly aware of the cashed up bogan market. Also, there appeared to be weddings and live music every single night. Which is great except that the island and hotel is set up in such away that it echoes directly into your room, even with the door closed. mercifully this ended at around 11 though. We also realised that unless you're doing a reef tour or drinking by the pool there's really not much to do. We ended up driving our cart around for a few hours then getting aggressively involved with the swim up bar. Actually on that note, there's a swim up bar which is dope. They did need some sort of pool volleyball or social activity though. Another issue we noticed on the island was chronic understaffing. I'd like to note that there was a 50/50 staff split between amazing and government employee apathetic. There were several staff who remembered me after a single interaction. There were also others who appeared grossly offended that i dare bother them. Several of the bars and restaurants in the hotel complex appears to have about 20% too few staff with a lot of uncleared plates, dirty tables, slow service, etc. The people working there were going at 110%, but there were just too few of them. Overall I feel like the board of this organisation must have been cutting edge when this opened, but are now like that boss you have who keeps insisting on lame stuff and won't listen to anyone telling him that no one wants to go bowling anymore (incidentally there is a bowling alley here). The executive really need to get some fresh blood and ideas in here to overhaul the resort at a core level. I'm concerned that with the prevalence of cheap international travel Hamilton Island is going to start becoming irrelevant. For the same cost of this trip I could have gone to Bali, Thailand, Goa or Sri Lanka and had a gold buggy that was not monitored in a 1984-esque fashion.
