Over One & Only Hayman Island Resort

Dit is het meest noordelijke eiland van de Whitsundays, bij het Great Barrier Reef. U kunt er fantastisch snorkelen en duiken in het azuurblauwe water. U kunt een vlucht maken per helikopter of watervliegtuig, een geweldige ervaring. Het luxe Hayman Island Resort, de enige accommodatie op het privé-eiland, beschikt over meerdere zwembaden, tennisbanen en een gerenommeerde spa. Op culinair gebied wordt u schromelijk verwend. U kunt dineren waar en wanneer u maar wilt, in een van de restaurants, op uw terras of bij kaarslicht op het strand. Of u nu verblijft in een kamer of een suite, met of zonder eigen 'plunge pool', in de Hayman Beach Wing of in de Hayman Pool Wing; hier zal het u echt aan niets ontbreken. Deze eilandengroep, bestaande uit 74 kleine tropische eilanden, ligt in het hart van het Great Barrier Reef voor de kust van Queensland. Dichtbegroeide groene eilanden en kleine atollen met fijn wit zand wisselen elkaar af. Alleen hier al zou u een vakantie kunnen doorbrengen.

De eilanden zijn ook zeer geschikt voor een zeer ontspannen zeilvakantie. Het is hoe dan ook een welkome afwisseling tijdens uw rondreis Australië. Het helderblauwe water en de caleidoscopische kleuren en vormen van het koraal zijn al vanaf een boot goed te zien, vanuit een vliegtuigje is het nóg spectaculairder.

From the moment we arrived at Hamilton Island we felt welcomed and special. The staff were all smiles but a special mention has to go to Henri at reception who gave us an upgrade to a beautiful suite and Joseph who gave us a lovely Bula hug. Wish there were more Fijians working on Hayman Island. Thank you to everyone who served us this past week, a holiday I'll never forget. One thing for Celeste to look into, is the steak in the Italian restaurant. My husband was disappointed in the flavours ie: (lack of.)

We booked a couples and family holiday here for 5 days to celebrate my impending 50th. From the original booking through Virgin Holidays, to the organisation of Tegan the Events Manager at Hayman, it could not have been smoother. There were 11 adults and 10 kids of varying ages and the staff couldn't do enough. The service is warm and friendly yet very professional. We booked a Chefs table for the adults which everyone agreed was the highlight of the trip - the food and wine pairing was outstanding. Another highlight for me was the beach seafood buffet for the last night with the most perfect setting and sunset. The freshness and quality of the seafood was second to none - we have amongst our group some very seasoned travellers and foodies and each were equally as impressed. It's expensive here, but everything is so perfect we all deserve a few days at Hayman!

"NEVER EVER give a Gift Certificate for this destination ....it will not be reasonably honoured..."

I received a gift certificate on my retirement from full time work for one night at the resort including breakfast, a marina berth for our yacht a restaurant meal. It was for when we sailed our yacht from Sydney to the Whitsundays and was to be redeemed as a great experience when we arrived in the Whitsundays. It was absolutely clear that the administration of One and Only did not want to practically provide the services in the gift certificate. Not only wouldn't they provide the services but they would not even allow us to reduce the inclusions so we could at least visit the island. I thought their approach was extremely cynical. After not being able to contact anyone who could help by phoning them, I emailed reservations to work through the best way to use the gift certificate. The gift certificate, authorised by then General Manager, Ed Brea was given based on us using the accommodation when we sailed to the Whitsundays in our yacht. It was for at the lagoon room. I was told to come back in 4 months time as it was all booked out. I tried to downgrade the room, then I tried to just berth the boat and sit around the pool and have a meal in the restaurant but of course, no day visitors allowed. Any attempt I made to negotiate some form of gift certificate redemption was refused apart from a provision they knew we couldn't comply with - come back in 4 months time. I cannot include the full email exchange as that would reasonably contravene the trip advisor rules, but Anjelica, the executive assistant who communicated with me was well drilled on how to make a gift certificate holder disappear. Well done Anjelica as no matter how hard I tried, none of the 160 rooms were available to me anytime before February and you simply and firmly told me to go away. I felt I had a responsibility to the those good enough to give me the gift certificate to use all of my ability to at least set foot on the island. The management had different ideas. After a ridiculous amount of negotiating I realised I simply wasn't welcome so we did as requested and went away. I rate the handling of this communication as disgraceful. I don't blame the executive assistant who communicate with me. Anjelica was obviously simply told to either up-sell me or simply make me go away and she did that extremely effectively.

"Needs more improvement"

The One & Only Hayman Island is a beautiful property in a beautiful setting. However, like most of the previous reviews, it's not quite 5-star even though you pay 5-star prices. So I've given it an average rating overall. Even with the Luxury Escape deal, it was still pricey once you add in the luxury yacht transfer ($420 round trip per person) and any of the excursions. We arrived into Hamilton airport, and the check-in after getting off the plane was great. We were greeted warmly by staff and shown promptly to our luxury yacht. The drinks were free-flowing as promised, and the nibbles were just okay. The yacht itself was beautiful and we really enjoyed our hour-long journey to the resort. There were staff there to greet us and take us to our rooms. Ours wasn't ready yet, so we had to wait about 45 minutes, which was okay. We had upgraded from a lagoon room to the ocean view room, and it was lovely, with a view over the lagoon, pool, and ocean. There are only 4 restaurants for dinner, so we tried them all. With the luxury escape, we had a separate 3-course a la carte menu at each restaurant or a $50 credit per person if we wanted to order off the regular menu. The food was okay, but not as good as I expected. Bamboo & Amici don't have beach views, whereas Aquazure and Pacific do. We booked our dinner reservations for the first few nights, and could only get 8pm. A couple times the restaurant had no record of our booking, which was not good. The breakfast buffet is quite extensive. For lunch, there was only a choice of Aquazure or On the Rocks. We preferred On the Rocks due to less children and the menu was a little better than Aquazure. For dinner though, Aquazure was my preferred place due to their tapas menu. The drinks are definitely overpriced, so consider bringing some of your own alcohol to drink in your own room. One night we had ordered barrel-aged negronis. While the first round was fine, they obviously ran out for the second round and served us half-full negronis at the full-serve price. Not okay. In terms of excursions, we did the sunset sail and the Langford island trip. The sunset sail was overpriced at $150/person, and the Langford island trip was better at $50/person. The sunset sail would've been nicer if it wasn't for the old skipper Billy. Overall, the staff were friendly and tried to be helpful. However, it seems that they needed better training and better communication with each other. There would be no record of our restaurant booking or an excursion trip. Most of the staff were young backpackers, which is fine, but for a 5-start resort, they should really have long-term staff members. While they were lovely, it was apparent that their knowledge of was limited in some respects. I'd like to mention some staff members in particular (both good and bad). Young Billy on the luxury yacht transfer took great care of us, making sure we always had a drink in our hand which made for a great start to our holiday. We saw Madeline quite a bit at our meals, and she was just lovely and friendly all the time. Cassidy was also lovely staff member, and she waited on us for dinner at Aquazure and made sure that we never went thirsty at the pool. Mario was a fabulous dive instructor, and was also on the sunset sail excursion. There were a couple staff members that lessened our holiday experience. Old Billy the skipper on our sunset sail was an unapologetic racist and sexist old man. He made quite a few racist jokes/comments towards Mario, and many of the passengers including us were shocked. At dinner at Aquazure one night, Denis (a waiter) was adamant that we had ordered a dish when we had not. At the same time, he tried to do the same to 2 other tables near us. Obviously he was the confused one. While he was reprimanded by other staff, he couldn't even apologise. Cassidy overheard and came over to apologise. While it is a beautiful resort, it could still use improving, especially in terms of better staff and better training of staff.

"GM should read the reviews"

It felt tiresome to repeat the previous reviews, and frustrating for the owners that the general manager in charge of this property shows such disrespect to the reputation of the property and guest experience. Clean the rooms properly, lift the standard of meals and junior staff, maintain the beach and pool areas during the day, even with the frayed towels. Senior staff good, general manager should be ashamed of delivering a four star experience instead of a heavenly one, unless he wishes to charge four star prices.
