"Creature Comfort In The Middle Of Nowhere"
Considering the remoteness of the place, the difficulty in getting workers and the facilities it provide, I would say you cannot ask for more. Room are clean and decent size, resort grounds are huge with many walks available and things to do. Parking is right outside your unit, they also have a verandah for you to sit outside to have nibbles and watch the bird life.
"Miles from anywhere. Hats off for providing a comfortable safe enjoyable base."
As with AY resort, hats off for actually being there. Never forget you are hundreds of miles from "civilisation". Like AY resort, it's a similar idea of a range of accommodation and dining options. We were in a standard cabin. It had a veranda deck a foot or two above ground level. It was all fine except for a noisy fridge and very few accessible power sockets. There is a boardwalk/pavement around the area in front of chalets, often with canopies. This shows signs of lack of maintenance, with overgrown greenery to be weaved through as you walk, and a broken fixing point between two canopies with the result that they and their metalwork drooped to eye level. When we reported this it was fixed within a few hours the same day. There is a nice “Ridge Walk†around the site in the surrounding bush, although it does require you to clamber a little. This gives great views of the canyon face. There is an expensive shop but hey, everything is trucked in. You can park outside your room. No safe deposit box. No evidence of water restrictions. Fuel. A pool which was used a lot by children while we were there. I think we had more of a feeling of nature intertwining with accommodation than in AY, and we quite liked this. We looked out onto a small bush / scrub area which attracted lots of bird life. The canyon is about 10km drive away with a range of easy walks as well as the rim walk. Note that the 'inner end' of the canyon was fenced off for repairs to paths when we saw it. (Oct 2017)
This was a group holiday with pre-booked accommodation. The large room we had was comfortable and clean despite being a little bit tired. Dinner and breakfast were both at Charmichael's Restaurant where the service was fine even though there seemed to be a lack of staff. There was a decent choice of meals on the dinner menu and the breakfast buffet also had plenty of variety.
"Very Good Considering the Location"
The Kings Canyon Resort is located about 10 minutes drive from the starting point for the Kings Canyon Rim walk. My wife and I stayed at the resort the night before we did the Kings Canyon Rim walk and we are glad we did as we were able to have a good night's sleep, get up before sunrise, undertake the rim walk before the heat of the day and be back at the resort by mid-morning. We enjoyed the walk and felt very satisfied with our achievement and I believe staying at the resort the night before the walk helped us to enjoy the experience. We decided to indulge a little by staying in a Deluxe Spa Room. It was impressive considering we were staying in the centre of Australia in a semi-desert location. The room, including the view from the spa bath, looked out onto the rugged rock and landscape of the area. It was great. The room was a little bit dated but it was tastefully decorated, comfortable and everything worked, unlike some accommodation we have stayed at.
Drove from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock and stopped there for one night. Room was spacious but unfortunately outdated. Small ants, spider webs in the lampshade and on the ceiling, no wifi (which is understandable given the isolation), etc. I was happy to leave in the morning.
