Despite the efforts of the floor staff the service in this restaurant was really poor. Having to wait over an hour for mains is not good enough. Food was average , service from the kitchen was chaotic . Not good enough.
"Best place to stay in Kingscote"
Great place to stay, it looked to be the only accomodation in Kingscote with a view of the water. I would recommend an upstairs room. Perfect base to see the Island over 3 days, plus just across the road from the Pelican feeding.
"Expensive yet average KI townhouse"
We stayed in a Townhouse which had great views. It was on 5 split levels with plenty of space including a garage with internal access. It had 2 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. The beds were firm but we slept well overall in the quiet environment. The decor was very tired and could do with an upgrade, especially considering the expensive price ticket. The carpet was very old, faded, worn and stained in places. The kitchen had dirty implements e.g. a dirty knife in the knife block. The kitchen lacked some basic items such as a potato peeler and potato masher. The air con/heating unit was very noisy even after it was turned off, especially in the master bedroom. The chairs at the dining table were very uncomfortable and cheap. The plates and glasses in the kitchen were a variety of different sizes and shapes - not many matching. Overall, this was way too expensive for the quality provided. Location was great but that is the best you could say for it. Then again, there did not appear to be many other options on the whole island. KI is a beautiful place to visit, but accommodation is not forthcoming!
"One night not long enough"
After a long day touring this wonderful island we were ready for a nice hot shower a nice meal and bed. At reception we were warmly greeted and offered an upgrade, to a new ground floor super king bed room "just because I can" was the receptionists reason. We must have looked exhausted, stairs were the last thing I needed. Thank you so much. Wow the room was lovely. Nicer than a lot of premium rooms in a major city hotel. The shower was lovely. Off to the bar for a pre dinner drink and then to dinner. Dinner was a wow. Whiting is my all time favorite fish and the one I ordered was perhaps the best I have ever eaten. So fresh, sweet, wow! Service was good too and a bottle of local wine added to the pleasure of the meal. Oysters as entree and mouth watering desserts made it hard to choose. I have never eaten such fresh salads and vegetables as I had on Kangaroo Island. My husband enjoyed his meal a much as I mine. Highly recommend this wonderful hotel on this amazing island..We will return.
"Good property considering the limited options on the island"
I gave the hotel 4-stars, but those 4-stars are "in-context." That is, this is an island with no bridge service from the mainland, a limited population, and a limited selection of hotels. In those types of situations, my experience is that this is a pretty good hotel/deal. The hotel has rooms in the main building and apartment-like rooms across the road. My wife and I stayed in an apartment-like room. It was a very spacious one-bedroom apartment. If the couch folds out, it would be easy to fit four people in there (or three if it doesn't). The apartment had a kitchenette, which would be great if you're looking for that (there is a small supermarket in town, or you can bring with from the mainland). Our room was on the second floor, which has a better view and no one is stomping on the floor above you, but you have two flights of steps to walk up from the street. And, you park on the street for the apartments (I could see this being a problem during peak season). The location is good; near the water and the small strip in town. Brekkie was included in our rate and it was good, but not great. We also had dinner here one night, and that was also good, but not great. But again, in small towns like this with little else around, it was very respectable. I saw that others used the word ordinary for these rooms, and I think that's probably fair. There were stains on the very thin carpet and the bed was not the most comfortable. The apartment uses old-fashioned keys, there are two doors to go through (both locked), and you had to jiggle the key to get it to work. One thing that was definitely annoying was that the hotel made you get a wifi code EVERY day. WTH? I almost backed this down to 3-stars just for that. So, I landed on 4-stars for this hotel, but it's 3 or 4 depending on how you weigh the above. Cheers!
