Over Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge

"Reasonable motel style accommodation in a beautiful setting though American River is a poor location."

   13-05-2018
The hotel is situated alongside the water about a kilometre outside of the tiny township of American River. There is very little of note or of interest for visitors to American River apart from the Deck Cafe (which only opens from about 10-30am - 3-30pm), the Oyster Farm shop (similar hours to the cafe), The Shed (a community based sports centre that serves meals 3 nights a week), the Boat shed, Post Office and small general store. The next nearest restaurant of any note is Sunset Food and Wine (about 32 klms away) whilst Kingscote and Penneshaw (car ferry terminal), where you can also find more restaurants and shops are nearly 40 kilometres away in opposite directions. The airport is just over 30 kilometres away. Therefore whilst the hotel's setting in the bush land with water views from the balconies is beautiful, you are a long way from anywhere else of note. The hotel itself is more motel style accommodation with a central reception, dining, breakfast, bar and swimming pool areas with 4 one and 2 storey buildings branching off from there. Our very large room was on the top floor of a two story building that contained about 12 units (6 on the ground and 6 above) and faced the water. It was approximately a 20 metre walk from the main building. The room had air-conditioning and was furnished with a king sized bed (comfortable) with a bedside table and lamp either side, a single bed, a large wall mounted TV, 3 single lounge chairs, a coffee table, a stand alone lamp, a small table with 3 chairs, a huge walk-in wardrobe and a small kitchenette with a microwave, mini-bar and sink. The bathroom was also very large with a shower (no bath - water pressure was not great but they do suffer from water shortages) and an unusually small sink, given the size of the rest of the room. Most of the furniture and furnishings were dated but the room and bathroom were very clean. There was a balcony with a small table and 2 chairs that overlooked the water. Unfortunately the people staying below us were smokers so you were inundated with cigarette smoke if you sat on the balcony or left the door open. Car parking was free with one area along the road and another near reception but they were not undercover. There was also a (pay) guest laundry but we didn't use it. There was a safe in the room and the WIFI was included and worked OK but was restricted to 2 devices. Breakfast was a hot and cold buffet with eggs, bacon, hash browns, cereals, bread, juice etc. Unfortunately one morning the kitchen had a meltdown just as guests started to arrive for breakfast and there was no hot food for a good 10 minutes when it began to be replenished. One staff member said they were not expecting so many people which, if true, was a huge mistake as they knew how many people were staying the previous night. We also dined at the Reflections restaurant on 2 nights, not because it was great (it was OK), but because it was so far to drive in the dark to Kingscote or Penneshaw and, on the one night that we did venture out to Sunset Food and Wine, had seen a number of dead kangaroos and other animals on the road and driven slowly by other live kangaroos along the side of the road hoping that they would not jump out and damage both themselves and our rental car. Staff on the whole in the bar and in the breakfast and dining areas were very friendly although we did think that Leica, the manager at reception when we arrived could have been a little more accommodating. We arrived straight from the airport at approximately 11.30am and were advised that check-in was at 2.00pm and it was suggested that we could wait or go and have a look around and they would phone us when the room was ready. We left and had some lunch and a look around and came back at 1.00pm and the room was still not ready - my initial thought was that they may have prioritised the cleaning of our room knowing that we had already arrived and noting that we were gold ACCOR members - but not so. This time we asked whether they would store our bags - yes - and we went to visit Seal Bay arriving back some 4 hours later and noticing, when back in mobile reception that James, the other manager, had left us a voice message to say the room was ready.

"Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge"

   01-05-2018
Fantastic staff, very helpful, great food and service. Location a little out of the way but great area for exploring the tiny township of American River. Easy enough to get around to the other tourist sights.

"Very Comfortable Dining Experience"

   29-04-2018
The restaurant manager was very accommodating when we were trying to find a place for dinner at the last minute and late in the day. It is a very welcoming restaurant, comfortable chairs, good sized tables, well spaced away from the next table and carpeted throughout - so not café dining! Meals were well prepared and presented - safe choices but really nice. It was a really pleasant experience all round.

"Weekend getaway"

   23-04-2018
We visited here over the weekend of April 20. Nice neat little lodge hidden away in American River. The lady that checked us in was very welcoming and explained everything we needed to know. She walked us to our room and showed us around. We had a dinner booking that evening (we had to choose a time) and the food was really delicious. The wait staff were attentive and friendly. The food was a good price for the quality and the serving was so much I couldn’t finish it. The starter ciabatta bread was absolutely scrumptious. The rooms itself were neat and tidy and well maintained. I’m sure they’ll update in the near future. The surroundings and facilities were also very good for the price. The only thing I wish I knew before I booked was the distance to other little towns with stores. The local general store seemed to be closed every time I needed it.

"A little gem!"

   11-04-2018
What a lovely place to stay. For a start Kangaroo Island is fabulous and to stay here just made it even better. We were in a large group and they coped with check in very well. Our room was large and clean. The food was lovely even though they were catering for a large number of people. They do have their own ways of doing things but if you just go with the flow it is ok! For example we had to pay our bar bills and dinner bills nightly but then if they have had problems with non payers in the past then you can understand this. It was suggested we did a short night walk with torches from the hotel. We thought this was mad but went anyway. What a treat! We saw lots of wildlife that we would have missed if we hadn’t have gone. Look out for the pelicans on the beach - they are amazing looking birds!
