"Relaxed, Rustic & Romantic"

   29-04-2017
Wow what an amazing stay at Ranweli village, from the minute I saw the raft coming over the river to collect us on our first day, I was in awe! It is the perfect place to relax, unwind and spend quality time with your loved one, I found the setting to be very romantic and absolutely perfect for honeymooners like us. Switch off your phone and enjoy. The food is lovely, I particularly enjoyed the varied salads- which gave the option of something lighter for lunchtime. The staff are lovely and friendly, on our walk from restaurant to our room, we would say Hello to many staff members along the way, which makes you feel welcome and like you know where someone is should you have a problem. I hate to say it, but the one thing that really lets Ranweli down is the bar. For some reason, they make drinks from individual glass bottles of Coke, Sprite etc and it isn't "on tap". As an All Inclusive guest, you are not given a full bottle, and so often when you get your drink it is from an already open bottle and it is flat. The best thing to drink therefore is beer or wine, however wine is not included in all inclusive! Being all inclusive, you hope to make the most of the bar! (You have paid for it after all) however I really didn't enjoy the drinks and therefore felt a bit short changed. Also we noticed that non all inclusive guests got preferential treatment when it came to the bar. They would get the full bottles and also have it brought to them/ empties collected. Nothing was too much trouble. Sometimes we were left waiting and our empties were never collected... I do understand why they they treat them differently.. but I think the hotel should realise it makes you feel like a second best. We are not getting our drinks for free- we have paid upfront with money that we saved for months to afford! Please review this Ranweli! :-) Also worth mentioning, as a guest from England it was not recommended by our holiday agent, to drink the water. therefore you have to have a flat Coke or something instead... However the hotel do provide you with two small bottles of water per day in your room, therefore you can bring this with you to the restaurant if you prefer. The pool was amazing, based right by the sea. In April, we never had a problem getting a sunbed- the pool area was never busy which gave it an exclusive feel. We would spend the day by the pool then head the beach area outside our room at about 4/5 o clock and stay until the sun set- amazing, romantic.. After planning a wedding it was the most relaxed I've been in a long time! Our room was lovely, the bed was the most comfiest bed ever with amazing pillows! When booking it says all rooms are sea facing" which I suppose is true. However dependant on where you room is (ours was quite far down- but we liked the privacy) you may have to look through the mangrove trees to see the sea .. :-) Overall & aside from the bar, the setting, the beach, the room, the pool... Amazing! Everything I hoped for and more. Thank you.

"An unexpected gem!"

Short drive from the airport. Nice place to rest from a long flight before starting to explore Sri Lanka... A uauuu place for kids/ crabs from the mangrove, couple of rabbits from the resort, squirrels everywhere, small boat to cross the river, zero mosquitos. Rooms are simple, but very clean and lovely decorated. This place was a total surprise! Restaurant buffet was awesome with local, spice, yummy food. However, nothing to do if you are in the nightlife, party mood! Highly recommended.

"Great 1st visit to Sri Lanka"

Firstly, we booked with Virgin 8 months before travelling after being reassured that we were getting the best possible price by booking early and paying 50% up front only to find our holiday cheaper in the January sales. Virgin had no process or inclination to offer any retro discount or quid pro quo. We had upgraded to a beachfront bungalow but on arrival were placed just about as far from the beach as was possible. After speaking with the Virgin rep this was quickly addressed and we were moved. It is however always disappointing that these resorts try it on and Virgin should be more attentive to ensuring that room allocation matches booking. All that aside, the resort was good value for money, the food was good and the staff were helpful. The pool area gets very busy/noisy at weekends as local families come on a day pass. This resort is also popular for wedding photo shoots so you will see a lot of those. We took the canoe out on the river and the bike ride which were great fun. You can't easily swim in the sea and stormy weather brings a lot of detritus to the beach. You can get a tuk tuk to Waikkal, from where you can get the train to Negombo. You should haggle the price of the tuk tuk and not pay more than 300/400 rupees. In comparison, the train to Negombo was 20 rupees. You can also get the bus from Waikkal to Negombo which is an experience in itself. The barge over the river is a nice touch, however in rainy season when the river swells, they replace it with a motorboat.

"5* holiday magical"

   11-04-2017
On arriving at the resort it was magical, the staff all smiling and polite. The bungalow was in a great position and of 5* quality. The only thing thathat the resort did lack as it was slightly remote was some good evening entertainment. Unfortunately a sax, piano man and a couple of bad singers just marked the holiday. Would have liked to see some local entertainment ie, Sri Lankan music or dancing. Something to get the audience involved. Highlight of the holiday was Anthony and his wife, the local tour rep, shop owner situated just across the road from the resort. Our rep warned us not to go near him, but we had several trips organised by him and they were perfect (better than the tour reps). And the prawns his wife cooked were gorgeous. If you go, see Anthony, can't miss him as he walks the beach daily.

"Beautiful Location"

My husband and I stayed here for a five days. I would recommend this for couples who want privacy and just want to relax. To get to the hotel there is a man waiting with a raft and you cross the river on the raft. Its a very nice novelty and was fun the first few times, but got a little annoying after a couple of days especially when it was on the other side and you had to wait. I would suggest the hotel maybe builds a bridge for the travellers who are in a rush or just want to get to the other side. We stayed in the Bungalow, it was very nice, clean and spacious, and we spent a lot of the afternoons just sitting in front of the bungalow having a drink. The pool is lovely but a little small. Nevertheless still amazing view. You can walk up and down the beach (wouldn't recommend swimming beach is a little rough). There was cute pathways which would go through the hotel but they just led to other rooms. The hotel had the option of going canoeing, it was so much fun, however because the water is so open and a muggy colour i was crying thinking i was going to be eaten by crocodiles (my own fault i know) luckily my husband was behind me in the same canoe (which made it a little ok)! Once you get over that fear its quiet fun...JUST DONT THINK ABOUT CROCODILES The games room upstairs was fun but you need to have the windows opened as it gets very humid in there. I would suggest the hotel spend some money making a proper games room which has a seating area and different game. When we were there, there was a dart board (with one dart), a pool table and pingpong table. it was a lot of fun but again i think there could be a little more work there. The staff were very helpful to all our needs, especially when our Airconditioner started leaking (which happens at hotels) we called them and they got someone to fix it straight away. The food at the hotel was decent. A little expensive i thought, especially when theres not much else to do outside the hotel as it is far from everything. So again i would suggest this place for couples and families who just want some down time to relax on the beach. P.s There is a restaurant that sells traditional sri lankan food just in front of the entrance. Amazing food!! and very CHEAP and portion sizes are huge. We had the seafood mixed noodles with devilled pork. DELICIOUS!!! This is a good alternative if you want food that is more traditional and not made for tourists. Thank you for the great stay RANWELI, will be back agaun!!!
