"No traffic!!"

   19-01-2017
This is an amazing holiday retreat, away from the hustle and bustle of hectic traffic, fumes and noise of this beautiful island of Sri Lanka. To get to the hotel we crossed on a punt then taken along beautiful serene and tranquil paths to our room. It was heaven on earth for the week we were there. Hotel, staff and food excellent.

"A very honest review..."

   17-01-2017
We booked through virgin holidays from 26th December- 3rd January and had a wonderful time. We are a fun, close-knit family so generally have fun wherever we go. BEWARE- WINE IS NOT INCLUDED IN ALL-INCLUSIVE. We love wine, so this meant we had a hefty room bill when we left. They have to import all wine which is why it is not included. The cocktails for the all-inclusive package are not pretty at all- no umbrellas, fruits or even ice. The ones you pay for are much nicer. We were not impressed with the drinks in general and felt guilty asking for alcoholic drinks. Despite the drink situation, the place was beautiful, staff lovely and food incredible. Over this time period the nights ended early and it was very quiet in the evenings. However, New Year's Eve was amazing, they couldn't have done more to make it feel special- fireworks, competitions, dancers and again AMAZING FOOD. We were shocked when the bar closed at 1am on this night as we wanted to carry on the party. Anthony (the excursion man) was brilliant and much cheaper than the virgin rep. The beach was my highlight, I walked out of my bungalow and straight on to an empty beach. I would go back again just for the beach. Overall, I would recommend Ranweli for people who want to explore Sri Lanka in a quiet resort. If you like a bit of a party by night then definitely don't come here and if you like wine on holiday then don't get the all-inclusive package. Anna.

"Poor Disrespectful Management "

   15-01-2017
The hotel setting is great... The management however will try to tap into your pocket for anything they could get their hands on. Extra charges will be invented..On my checkout I was told to pay an extra amount not mentioned in check in. The manager Mr Senaka said its because of early check in.. When I said it was pre-approved .. the reason became because you had an elder child. When I said we used no extra bed or meal. .he said this is a business and we need to make money. A long and time wasting argument in which the manager showed miopic view focused on getting a minute sum of money rather than a satisfied customer. cust

"Good hotel"

   11-01-2017
Arrived 23rd Dec and stayed for New Year leaving 5th Jan. Overall the stay was very good in a hotel which is a bit out in the sticks with only Anthony's restaurant in the locality for a change of environment for a beer. Had lunch there one day which consisted of a watery fish curry with boiled rice, a beer and a 1.5 L bottle of water, worked out at £6.50! I can get Sunday lunch in my village for £6.00. The Gala dinners for Christmas and New year where excellent however but as with most hotels where ever in the world got ripped of with the wine. All rooms seem to consist of detached bungalows and mine was really good with fan and AC which strangely was directed over the coffee table. The annoying factor though was that on leaving I was given a bill calculated in Sri Lankan rupees even though everything was priced in Euros!! how does that work? surely not another way of ripping off the tourist? When asked, the reception could only say that that is how the computer works it out!!! If you are going to be charged in a certain currency surely things should be priced in that currency. Would I go back? NO

"Disappointed by the attitude of the staff"

   08-01-2017
We stayed at Ranweli for 10 nights (arriving home yesterday). Our bungalow was lovely and looked out on to the beautiful beach. We arrived at just before 10 pm on 27th December and were told to go straight to the restaurant as it had been kept open for us ( it normally closes at 9,30 pm) We had dinner, not much choice, but OK for a first impression. Rest of the holiday was good - we ended up upgrading to all inclusive as the hotel is in the middle of nowhere so no bars or restaurants to stroll out to - Negombo about half hour away in a tuk tuk. Food was OK, lots of very nice different spicy curries every day - breakfast, lunch and dinner! No real alternatives though if you didn't want hot and spicy - our 11 year old son struggled for food (there is only so many banana sandwiches a boy can eat!) - on the last two evenings I did persuade the chef to make him some chips, not ideal but better than no food at all. Restaurant staff and pool staff were nice and helpful. Hotel was clean and our cleaner friendly but spoilt himself by blatantly asking for a tip the day we were leaving. Our flight was not until 10 pm on Friday night so on Thursday we asked if we could have a late check out or at least have use of a room to use the shower before we left for our long journey home - we were told that we could keep our room until 2pm but that they did not have a shower room available, but suggested we used the outside shower near the pool and then got ourselves dressed and ready to leave in the toilets near the pool..... Not really acceptable. Eventually we did get them to agree to letting us use a shower in a room as long as we didn't touch anything else in the room other than the shower..... Our main problem, and the reason for rating the hotel so low was the reception staff. Nothing could be paid for in cash at the hotel so drinks on the first evening and a boat trip and the all inclusive upgrade needed signed to the room and paid at check out, which in theory should not have been a problem. However on the day we were leaving the reception staff were awful. We went to breakfast at around 8.30 and was asked if we could check out now, we said no and we would check out later, only to be asked again when we walked through reception after breakfast. We decided to vacate our room at around 10 am and leave our bags in reception. On going to reception to check out we handed over a debit card for payment - the debit cad was inserted into 4 different machines, each time they asked us to put in the pin number and then said its not gone through as there is a card error. After over an hour trying to sort out this problem, I rang Santander to see what the problem was - there was not problem it transpired and the payment had gone through on the first attempt. The bank gave me the authorisation code and confirmed the amount the hotel had taken. The amount was correct, but the reception staff would not accept that this payment had been made. They were rude and aggressive demanded I leave my card number with them and come back at 4 pm. We refused to leave the card number bust asked them to check with their bank that they had received the payment giving them the authorisation code. They refused to ring the bank. We eventually left reception and went out for a couple of hours before returning to shower and leave for the airport this is when the real problems began. The reception staff began saying that we needed to pay again as they did not have the payment. We asked to speak the manager, he did not come to speak to us, the Virgin Holidays rep was not available - were we left with three aggressive reception staff demanding money. Our taxi arrived - the staff refused to let us leave the hotel, they refused to let the taxi diver pick up our bags, they told the boat man not to take us across the mainland. It was horrific, other guests were walking by and witnessed the outrageous behaviour.. The taxi driver tried to placate the situation and he was verbally abused too. We eventually ended up calling Santander again (my wife and son in tears) getting the bank to cancel the pervious payment and put it through again . No apologies whatsoever from the staff - they were obnoxious. Just to add insult to injury they then began demanding we made an additional 10 Euro donation to some local charity. We refused and this was met with further abuse. Absolutely never again - such a shame because other than for the hotel staff we had a great holiday. To end on a couple of positives (sadly not about the hotel) - we did a couple of trips with Antony (on the beach) and they were very good - in particular the national park at Yala were we saw Leopard, Elephant, Bear, Crocodile, Monkey etc. Negombo definitely worth a visit as is the new Heritance Hotel (formally Browns Beach). Fabulous cocktail bar on the 2nd floor!
