Over Paradise Taveuni

"Quaint and first-class all-in-one"

This place is amazing. I'm nearly at a loss of words because they excel in so many ways. If you look at the occasional negative review, you should realize that this place is very special. It has literally been re-built from the ground up 10 months ago, and those that focus on it's rebuild do not do it justice. The place is a fully functioning resort that caters to a very specific type of traveler. It is certainly a top of the line experience with beautifully made meals 3 times a day and a host of activities that really show off Taveuni and the world-class diving a 15 minute boat ride away (snorkeling only is very well supported as well). At the same time, it is very much family-run in the real sense of the word. Don't be surprised to see the family owner/managers sitting down to dinner with their own children a few tables away. It is a well run operation with many folks in the wings keeping things organized but you also get a real sense of community between owners, managers, and staff. To address others' concerns: the build quality of the construction is A-, and what I would expect out of a resort that is both top-of-the-line but also hangs on to affordability. We stayed at a few other places in Fiji and the build quality was similar elsewhere. The kitchen staff do an exceptional job of making a diverse variety of options when you're eating from them three times a day (are some items better than others, yes? but that would be the case anywhere). Of note, my wife is pescatarian and LOVED the food; if you're pure veg you will likely suffer as much as you would anywhere in the world but no worse. The a la carte drink pricing is not cheap but felt reasonable compared to what we saw elsewhere in Fiji. One last note, don't use any guidebook's notes about this place since they have evolved and rebuilt since visited; I found them universally off-base. My only issue with the resort was both mildly annoying but ultimately a huge part of what made the resort what it is. This place is FAR from the Taveuni airport and many of the other sites on the island. It wouldn't be Paradise if not removed, but just prepare yourself for lengthy airport transfers (~1 hour), transportation to the famous waterfalls (1.5 hours) and Lavena Coast Walk, and to town. We can't wait to come back here for another visit!

"10th Anniversary Bliss"

   15-01-2017
My hubby and I stayed at the wonderful Paradise Resort for our 10th wedding anniversary. We got so pampered by the staff, they went the extra mile to make it a memorable occasion for us. We absolutely loved our stay. Our room was wonderful, the food was fantastic, and the staff were AMAZING!! Great diving out on rainbow reef. We did quite a bit of snorkeling around the resort, sad to see the devastated reef from the hurricane, but there are pockets of recovered reef that was great to see. We felt like part of the family here at Paradise, and sulked for weeks after going home, as we just wanted to be back at Paradise. We would love to go back again one day, and take the kids next time. Loved Walter and the other boys in the band every night, their music was fantastic. Ahhhhh, take me back!!

"Not quite paradise."

First of all, I need to acknowledge that this resort was destroyed 10 months ago by cyclone Winston, and they have done an amazing job getting it back and running again. That being said, I have mixed feelings about our stay. First, the good: the dive boat is the nicest I've been on. It's huge and comfortable. One day we had a pod of 50+ dolphins around us on our trip back from the reef. The diving on Taveuni is just incredible. Luckily, we were there on a quiet week and we had very small groups with our dive masters. I'm not sure they could handle capacity until they get the other boats fixed. The family who run this resort are lovely. The owner chatted with us during happy hour and made us feel at home. Their (adopted) kids cliff jumped with us and showed us the "cave" near the dock. They bring joy and playfulness to the resort. But with the good comes the bad: the food. Oh god. Some days it was downright depressing. If you're vegetarian, I hope you love white cabbage. They overprice the local beer and charge you a "corkage fee" to bring your own to dinner. I recommend eating the curry when it's available. I think the farms at the south end of the island are still suffering from the cyclone, and hopefully the food issues will get fixed over time. Our ocean-view bure was ok. It was built hastily after the storm and it shows. There are big cracks between the doors that let in mosquitos at night. The indoor shower is impossible to use (not tall enough and sprays water everywhere) and the outdoor shower dribbles cold water on you. Hot water comes off and on: boiling, freeing, boiling, freezing. The water in the room is not good to drink and you have to go to the bar to get refills. Admittedly, the bed is very comfortable. A couple more things: I didn't like having to sign a waiver to be at the resort. We also had to sign our names on multiple bills every day. It made the whole experience less relaxing. They play what I humorously called "Hawaiian Airlines Soundtrack" over the sound system all day. You hear the same songs over and over. It became maddening and we did mention that it was getting repetitive. Personally, I'd prefer the sound of ocean breezes and bird-song. Or maybe just play the music at happy hour. To reiterate, I think this place has really suffered because of the cyclone, and I have confidence that it will get better with time.

"Great Week in Paradise"

   09-01-2017
We were part of a dive group (even though we just snorkel) that spent a week at Paradise. It is a perfect spot for those that want to get away from it all. The staff were outstanding in their efforts to rebuild the resort after the Cyclone Winston destroyed much of the property. The staff is amazing in the desire to serve your needs, be it food choices or diving options. There was plenty of fish to see, along with a few sharks. Unfortunately the cyclone tore out alot of soft coral towards the surface, though the divers said there was more at lower depths.

"Paradise Found"

   03-01-2017
This was our first visit to Fiji. Even still recovering from Clyclone Winston, Paradise Taveuni set the bar high for return trips. The Oceanfront Vale was perfect for my husband and myself. The air conditioning in our unit was phenomenal. When we travel to dive, we are primarily interested in eating, sleeping and diving, not nightlife or excursions. Paradise Taveuni fit the bill for us. Our only disappointment was with the lack of Wifi in our room as we'd checked on that specifically prior to booking the trip because of work needs. There was poor Wifi in the common area and you had to use the resort's tablet for access. It rained everyday (a lot!) and we still had the trip of a lifetime. The people of Paradise Taveuni absolutely make the place. Each and every person called us by name from day one. The food was incredible and having choices for each meal was very nice. Personal service and attention to detail were like nothing we'd ever experienced.
