Over State Game Lodge & Resort
De State Game Lodge is een prima uitvalsbasis voor een bezoek aan het Custer State Park. Ruige bergen omgeven de State Game Lodge.

"We were in Shock "
After spending 3 nights up in a Sylvan Lake Lodge Corner King room, we moved to Cabins at State Game Lodge for 3 days. We could not believe our eyes upon entering, nor the lack of heat in this one room wonder!?! Yes it was cheaper, but still pricey, considering NO heat, and cabin condition. Totally unappealing with carpet pieced together in places., uncomfortable beds, dead bugs, spider webs and No heat. We went back to Front Desk, hoping another room was available. Lucky for us there was ,over at CreekSide Lodge, on the other side of State Game Lodge lawn....Front Desk would not charge us for moving. We packed up and moved as fast as we could.
"Game Lodge Campground with friendly park rangers - sleeping cabin stay"
There are 11 sleeping cabins available at Game Lodge Campground. This was the perfect option for our stay. While there are not bathrooms in these cabins, it is a small enough campground that facilities are close by. We really enjoyed the quaintness of this campground and the price. The amenities are pretty good for a small campground. There are: laundry facilities, heating, air conditioning and electricity in each cabin, a picnic table, a fire pit by each cabin (you provide the wood which is available for purchase at camp stores), a camp store about 1/4 mile away, Grace Coolidge Creek flows though the campground, and there is a fishing/swimming pond. Be aware that beds are about the only thing in these cabins at the campground, so if you're looking for a full service cabin, keep searching. Keep in mind that my "very good" rating is based on comparison to other similar lodging options. Obviously I would not compare a sleeping cabin to a 5 star resort. Draw backs: we had to provide our own sleeping linens, and cooking items, water container. The mattresses in the small cabins weren't the comfiest, but served their purpose for several nights. Check-in was not until 4 pm and check-out was noon. Check out time was fine for us, but it would have been nice to check in an hour or two earlier. Make sure you check out the programs that the park has to offer during your visit. There were several nights that movies were shown at the Tatanka Theater, Jr. Ranger Program, fishing programs, etc. The park rangers working at the campground during our stay were amazing! They not only were friendly but were open to suggestions in regards to the programs offered.
"A Historical Lodge"
Best to go off season and enjoy a historical room and a quiet meal in the lodge Great location , close to hikes, wildlife and visitors center. This is the only lodge opened later than all the others and couldn't be more comfortable
"Be Certain to Stay at the Game Lodge"
Three couples traveling together could not get into the Game Lodge itself, in spite of seeking reservations months ahead. The Game Lodge offered us alternate accommodations at a ranch house some distance from the Game Lodge. Disappointment is an understatement. Two of the three bedrooms had baths, one was actually a basement "dormitory room," and the proximity of stables meant there were flies a plenty. So we can't speak for the Game Lodge itself, but it has to be a better stay than the accommodations we had. On departing, we advised the desk staff at the Game Lodge that a visit from an exterminator would be a good idea - they didn't seem surprised. Bottom line - if you want to stay at the Game Lodge, insist on the Game Lodge itself unless you are bringing your own horses and a lot of tolerant friends.
"Beautiful area with lovely New cabins"
I stayed at the State Game Lodge in mid September. I booked a NEW 2 bedroom cabin which was really lovely. The best part was no dirty, old carpet. The cabin is spacious with a large living area, kitchen area with a dining table, 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. It is very nicely furnished. Bring your own coffee for the coffee maker. Bedrooms are tiny so my grandchild's pack and play literally was in the closet. September must be busy because there were NO hotel rooms for 2 nights only cabins when I made reservations in June. I originally booked my 2 bedroom cabin online but then read that there are new and old ones. Our NEW cabin was $325 a night; the old cabins are $250 a night. I had to call to make the switch so I would call and not use their online system for reservations. The $75 difference is well worth it. South Dakota has a huge fly problem not just the State Game Lodge. They were far worse in the Badlands at the Cedar Pass Lodge. We could not sit on the tiny porch because of bugs. They do have a fire pit with each cabin and wood and kindling are available for purchase at the General Store about 2 minutes away. General store also has food if you want to make your own breakfast or lunch. The kitchen is equipped with everything that you would need. We ate breakfast and dinner at the main Lodge. Reservations are essential for dinner. I had to plead for a 6 pm one night and 5:30 the next. Lots of tour buses have their clients stay at both the Creekside hotel rooms and the new State Game hotel rooms which apparently makes reservations essential unless dining late. The food was fine as was the service. There is nothing nearby to eat. We did have lunch at the Sylvan Lake Lodge, and it was very good. If staying in Custer State Park, I would definitely select the State Game Lodge. Also their jeep safari tour is good. It is in a great location to drive the Iron Mountain Road and the Needles Highway.Black Hills burger and bun restaurant in Custer had amazing buffalo and beef burgers and was our best meal on this whole trip.
