I would like to add one caveat before I launch into this review-and that is that I wasn't a fan of the Cook Islands or even Aitutaki in general and don't enjoy lying in the sun as a full time activity. I have experienced a wide range of travel experiences, but what I experienced here was not what I was expecting. I paid $370AUD a night (a not insignificant sum) and when I got to my room I was immediately confused. I feel that the owners of Aitutaki Village do not inject their profits back into the business. It's run on a shoe string and the service is mediocre at best. It is not an exaggeration to say that apart from sleeping in the room I avoided it at all costs-it was a dark (unlit) space with no amenities apart from a cheap bathroom and kitchenette and completely inadequate lighting. That left me in a bit of a conundrum as there was practically nothing to do in Aitutaki apart from lie in the sun. The proprietors don't even put cushions on their plastic sun beds! I don't recommend going to the town or even exploring as there is virtually nothing apart from the beach for which you need to have reef shoes to even walk in it (and Aitutaki Village does not supply these). They run the Bishop's lagoon cruise so you get a 'discount' off the price of the lagoon cruise. In retrospect, given how much I paid in very poor accommodation it should have been free. The communication around the lagoon cruise was terrible-a couple in our group didn't pay the upgrade fee to a full cruise and were marooned on a tiny island for 3-4 hours. If you live to eat (I am a foodie so it's integral to me)- I forbid you to go to the Islands! The food is terrible in general and extremely expensive. The best part of the 'free' breakfast was the paw paw which grows on the island nice and fresh. The rest of it is not substantial enough and you end up having to go out for (a generally terrible) brunch. I suspect a lot of the previous reviews are either fake or the accommodation must cater to a certain type of person-just make sure you are the right candidate before you stay here. Think: backpackers accommodation with poor lighting and make your choice accordingly. I would like to add one more piece of advice: If you are used to the types of service, value for money and experiences you can get in Asia, don't set foot in the Cook Islands.
"Fabulous location , fabulous staff."
Without a doubt this was the highlight of our trip to the Cook Islands. From the moment we were greeted at the airport to the moment left, we were looked after by friendly and helpful staff. We were greeted by name and made to feel special. The location would have to be the best on the island. The restaurant was on the waters edge which made for very enjoyable dining. The rooms were comfortable and clean although some fixtures were tired. The food at the resturant was lovely. The buffet on the island night was spectactular and the show very enjoyable. With a continental breakfast supplied we felt we had good value. We would be very happy to stay there again if we return to Aitutaki.
The location was great. Room was adequate but could be improved with indoor chairs and small table as outside plastic chairs are not very comfortable. Disappointed that the wifi was not free even though it was stated our itinerary. We were given 1 free voucher but refused any more. Was told by the manager that 'free wifi' doesn't mean free for the whole time! The paddleboat had been broken for a month - even on island time it should have been repaired or replaced. The Bishop's boat cruise to One Foot Island was good. Friendly helpful staff.
"Location, location, location!"
Without doubt Aitutaki Village has the best location on the Island. The views are truely stunning and just like the brochures! It was a true pleasure being lazy and enjoying the lagoon, in and out of it. The 12 cabins are basic but clean and comfortable, with air conditioning and a ceiling fan, and we were quite happy staying in them. The included breakfasts were adequate but not outstanding. And the same could be said of the evening meals we had. The reception staff were first class but the restaurant staff seemed a little too laid back! Over all we were happy with our visit and thought it very good value for money.
"Best Location on the island. Very friendly staff."
It is the best location on the island. The facilities needs an update but this is negated by the friendly helpful staff and location to the lagoon. Must use Bishop Tours to the islands for they pick you up right on the beach. Breakfast can use more local fruit and better choices of healthy options. Then beach chairs need updating but it was nice the kayak are there to be used. The drinks are not too pricy either. All round great place and I would return. Great Location.
