Over First Landing Beach Resort

Gelegen aan een prima strand, waar ooit de eerste bewoners van Fiji hun voet aan land zetten. Welkom in het First Landing Beach Resort.

"Mix of Great and Disappointing"

The ‘Great’ part of the title is really aimed at all the people/staff we encountered at this hotel: all very friendly and helpful, and really made for a great experience. And also would apply for the resort as a whole if not for the portion below that was 'Disappointing'. The ‘Disappointing’ part is that the apartment we were allocated to was located in the middle of a building site! We had no warning prior to our travel or even as we ‘checked in’ to the resort itself. This meant that aside from a terrible view out the front of partially built buildings, you had the dust and noise of an active building site for the whole working week, and even at times over the weekend. This was not conducive to relaxing at the apartment, or really being able to make use of the associated pool area. We had to keep the curtains closed to stop workers looking in, and there were times if you were in the pool, you’d have workmen looking down at you. Pretty crazy, and very disappointing. (As with all locals, the builders were a really nice friendly bunch of people!) When raised with the management, they apologised, but said they had no other place to move us to. There was no compensation. They did provide us with an option to upgrade to a villa at our own cost of 100 dollars per day: this felt wrong that to escape the building site we needed to do this, but we did just so we could try to make the best of our vacation. The new villa was better as it was not immediately viewing the building site, but was located immediately behind the original building, so still impacted by the daily noise. As a tip for those with families, I would recommend spending the extra on the villa over the apartment as you get a lot more space for your money. The apartments have a nice bathroom, but the main area is small if you try to put a family in it with a double bed, a single bed they fit in, and a sofa bed. The food and drink available at the restaurant is good, so if you want you really don’t need to leave the property. However, a 5-minute walk down the road takes you to a place called the Boatshed Restaurant: I would strongly recommend going here too as it provides you with more variety over that offered in the hotel (which to be fair does offer a great variety!). It is in a nice location, and again good staff. There's also an ATM located near here. At the resort, there is some form of entertainment most nights, and it’s pretty good too. You can also get a cooking lesson from their chef which involves going to the local market to pick your produce: I would highly recommend this! Booking of taxis is a little confusing as the resort says it will be charged to your room, but then the taxi wants to be paid in cash…this happened a few times to us, so be careful about getting charged twice and ensuring you do have cash rather than a CC to pay. The beach itself is not great, but the water is good for kayaking and snorkelling…and there is a nice big pool. Overall, I would return to this resort, but I would definitely obtain a guarantee before going that no building work was going on!

"Great place to stay and from there explore the main island"

We stayed 4 nights in First landing with three kids (10-8-4 years), and we like the place. Room are nice and clean, and the kids club was good for the kids.... they feed the fish, the turtles, and played around. The pool was super nice and big enough. Breakfast was ok and staff is kind and really helpfull. We used first landing as base to drive around the island to explore in some day trips: Lautoka, Navala Village to the north, and then Coral Coast and Sigatoka sand dunes to the south. I recommend the place thinking in a nice place to stay and explore the main island during the day. The beach is nice for a walk, but the water is not cristal clear. With the kayaks we did some snorkeling a litlle away from the shore. Was a good introduction for the kids. However, the snorkelling in the yasawas was suberb. There are a lots of parties going on... marriages, end-of-year-dinners, so that the restaurant gets busy, however it didnt interfear with the rooms and the nice sleeping. Still nice to interact with local people.... Nice place, recommend.

"Hidden gem"

Beautiful landscaped gardens, heated lap pool, friendly staff, simple but very Fiji. One would think you wouldn’t be able to get a genuine island feel on the mainland but somehow First Landing succeeds. With beach frontage, a beautiful cove to walk at low tide and facilities in amongst leafy surrounds you do feel away from it all. The villas are a great size with their own deck and all the requirements for comfort, I wish we had spent longer here rather than staying at Denarau after our island adventures. Would recommend for a relaxed Fiji break and in good proximity to Nadi Airport and the Mamanuca Islands.

"Tourist Trap"

I was hesitant to write this review until I interacted with the manager, Amanda Braddock. This resort is one big tourist trap. It’s a pretty small resort, so if you stay more than one night, the staff will know you. We had booked a five night stay. The only saving grace of this place is the friendliness of the staff. They genuinely seem happy that you’re there, even though they are only getting paid $3.15-$5.00/hour Fijian ($1.80-$2.50/hour USD). You do feel a little awkward staying there because you know the staff are being taken advantage of. However, the locals are not the only ones being ripped off. This resort it in the middle of no where and there is literally nothing else around. There is one restaurant, one bar, and one gift shop. There are no televisions in the rooms, and though they seemed fairly clean, the condition of our bure was that of an old Motel 6. See attached photos. We paid to upgrade to a beachfront spa bure, but we did not get beachfront (those weren’t even built yet), and the “spa” was a single person bathtub with jets in the bathroom. The resort didn’t even have a spa by the pool. I get that technically they could advertise the spa part, but the beachfront? There was no beach in front of or even remotely close enough to justify their false advertisement. So that was a wasted $200 USD. They offered free WI-FI (which didn’t always work) at the bar only. If you wanted it in your rooms it was $40 USD for 3 GB (enough for streaming one movie). Paying $40 to watch a movie on our laptop was not going to happen. At first, we didn’t think it was that big of a deal until we realized there’s nothing really to do unless you book tours everyday (which is pretty expensive). The resort advertised free use of snorkel and kayaks, but there wasn’t really anywhere to snorkel or kayak from the resort. You could swim in the ocean or the pool, or lay out in the sun – that’s about it. When it rains/storms you’re stuck in your room doing nothing. The gift shop had about 20 random used books for sale if you got desperate. I assume they were just books people left behind. The restaurant you had to eat at was about $10-15 USD for lunch/dinner. The options were not great, and the food was a step below an Applebee’s. The continental breakfast was the best meal offered. If needed, they offered laundry service. There was not a place where you could do it yourself. The price for laundry, to give you an idea, was $1.80 USD per pair of underwear. The average load we figured would be about $50 USD. No way were we going to pay that. Overall, we were not happy with our stay. There were some nice things about the resort – it was pretty, quiet, and the locals were nice. My husband and I are not traditional “party-ers” so we didn’t care, but I feel like I should mention that the bar closes at 11 p.m. every night. You are asked what you did that day and what you are doing the next day to make sure you are spending your money. You really can’t do anything or go explore anywhere on your own. We even kayaked to an island that you can take a boat tour to, and were immediately approached when we landed on the beach with “Who are you and where are you from?? It’s $10 FJD to land your kayak here.” We didn’t have any money with us in the kayak so we apologized and started to carry the kayak back down to the water to paddle back. He wouldn’t let us leave the island and called a boat to come get us, which they tried to charge us $500 FJD for!! It was a 15 min. boat ride we didn’t ask for. Lesson learned, if you’re going to visit Fiji, choose wisely, pay a little extra money for your stay, where you have options, and DON’T fall for First Landing Beach Resort’s “lower rates.”

My wife and I stayed here for five nights and enjoyed ourselves. The door was very good and everyone was very friendly. We went on the day trip to snorkel bounty island and that was great. When they had dances at night those were great as well. My wife got a massage that she enjoyed. I do wish they would update the bus schedule as it came at different times than listed. Also I wish they had a volleyball net or paddle boards. They do spray for bugs but we still got bit so complimentary spray would be nice.
