"Magical place, magical people! "
We visited Viwa on our first trip to Fiji and what an amazing introduction to the place! We stayed at the resort for 5 nights and can honestly say it was the best holiday experience we have ever had. The island is absolutely stunning with white coral beaches and turquoise sea - even more beautiful in real life than it looks in the pictures. The resort facilities themselves are traditional, with all of the comforts you’d expect from a high end resort. Our beautiful Bure has sea views and was accompanied by a terrace area, with our own sun beds and hammock on the beach. The food was great for the duration of the stay and we were shocked to read that some travellers found the portions to be on the small side - the portions were huge! Certainly value for money. My partner learnt to dive during our stay and Roy (instructor and owner) was a great teacher. He was so passionate about diving and my partner could see why after witnessing the amazing marine life in the dive spots surrounding the island. Massages with Maria are a must! She made me feel so relaxed after the first massage that I came back for two more during our stay!! The evening entertainment was always fun and energetic - our favourite being the kava ceremony on the last night. This was an amazing insight into a beautiful culture which is still alive today. We also enjoyed a romantic dinner on the beach on our last evening. The staff had gone to great lengths to prepare the area for us- we were surrounded by candles and intricate floral arrangements. To top it off, the fantastic in house band came and sang one of my favourite songs at my partners request with just a couple of hours notice. It truly was a night to remember. I would also recommend visits to the village the people are so happy and listening to the locals sing hymns during their church ceremony was beautiful. What made our stay so amazing and authentic was the staff. They are honestly, the kindest, most warm-hearted people that we have ever had the pleasure to meet. They made us feel so welcome in the free activities which are offered each day and their enthusiasm was infectious. All members of staff were genuinely concerned with how each and every guest was finding their stay and would do anything to brighten your day that little bit more. Each member of staff knew our names from the moment we arrived which was a lovely personal touch. The owners, Roy, Louise and Sheung were very welcoming from the offset too - always around if we needed anything and always up for a laugh! We will always remember the kindness shown to us by everyone on the island. We can not recommend this resort enough. Words cannot begin to describe how perfect our stay was. We were so sad to leave but it goes without saying that the beautiful song of the staff at Viwa will stay with us forever and we’ll definitely be back!
"Relaxing ...Fantastic frozen margaritas :-)"
We went to relax and Viwa was absolutely perfect for that...However if you are wanting more action there is plenty to do. The accommodation was comfortable and well maintained with sea views from all the bures. Food was tasty and portions were generous. The staff and leadership were great, always making time for a chat and a laugh. We have stayed at few resorts in Fiji and Viwa has been our favourite so far.
Although our expectations were high, they paled into insignificance with the reality of Viwa. From the moment we arrived, welcomed by the beautiful voices and warm smiles of the amazing staff, Louise (one of the owners) and Akuila (manager), every perfect, magical minute on Viwa is a precious memory. After check in, we were escorted to our spacious bure and delighted in the thoughtful touches— delicious home baked cookies and charming arrangements of hibiscus flowers with the towels and toiletries. The bures have air conditioning as well as ceiling fans, a safe for valuables, tea/coffee making facilities, and a bar fridge stocked with water, soft drinks, beer, and some wine. The bathroom opens on to a small garden but very private, due to the pitch of the roof; however, being open, you have to be prepared for nightly visits from local geckos. How you spend your time is totally up to you. At the front of each bure is your own section of pristine beach with two loungers, a large thatched umbrella, and a hammock. Just perfect for relaxing in this tranquil paradise after snorkelling or swimming. If you’re feeling a little more energetic there are many free activities on offer each day—guided snorkelling, kayaking and hand line fishing tours, cooking and sulu tying demonstrations, basket weaving, history hikes and volleyball with the staff. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the local village and school, Made even more special by the warmth of the welcome and listening to the children singing, especially those in the kindergarten. A thoughtful touch on our return was a staff member offering refreshing glasses of cold water—also offered after every activity and brought around throughout the day while lazing on the beach. Not to be missed is a massage with lovely Maria. I enjoyed two of the best massages I’ve every experienced thanks to her expertise. The dining area is in the main bure, which overlooks the ocean and the food is fresh (where possible locally sourced), very good and you never leave the table feeling hungry. There are several choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and all are reasonably priced. As beautiful as Viwa Resort is, the welcoming, genuine, bula smiles and, generous, warm hearts of the staff are the reason Viwa is such a unique and magic place. Who could ever forget the sensational voices that entertained us each morning, throughout the day, and in the evening. The beautiful voices of the church choir and the entertainment on the Pacific and Kava nights were fantastic, and the crab race lots of fun. To the manager Akuila, who was always available for advice and help; Sera, Lave, Melea, Mere, Milly, and Virry, who took such care to make sure everything was perfect for us at breakfast, lunch, and dinner; Tevula and Kini, who made us look forward to returning to our bure to see the gorgeous displays of hibiscus flowers; Vata, whose informative comments on our trip to the village were interesting, and your enthusiastic and enjoyable performances, and activities made my birthday celebration so memorable; Iliesa it was such an honour to be able to share our birthdays, your melodious voice and those of your group kept us entertained each evening (we love the CD); and the chefs, gardeners and all the other amazing staff that we hope to get to know properly next visit, Vinaka vaka levu! As well, thank you to owners Roy, Louise and Sheung, you go out of your way to make sure that all your guests feel welcomed and relaxed so that they can have the best possible holiday. Also important is that, unlike many of the large resorts on the mainland where the natural tendencies of the Fijians is tempered to meet so-called European expectations, you foster the real Fijian culture which is so much appreciated and valued by your guests. The only downside to Viwa was having to say goodbye. We were both very emotional when farewelled with Isa Lei. While all of the above is true, I struggled to find the right words to convey the absolute magic of Viwa, then realised that they are just words and words will never adequately express what is Viwa, its very essence gets under your skin and captures, a forever to remain, part of your heart. Vinaka vaka levu until we see you again (planning on May 2018 and Roy we’d love to see you welcome us wearing a kilt).
"Exceeded all expectations!"
This was our first visit to Fiji and we spend 8 glorious days at Viwa Island Resort, to celebrate my 50th birthday. What can I say.... the experience exceeded our expectations in every single way. We have travelled to places like the Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles and Zanzibar many times before and did not really know what to expect in Fiji. But honestly... it was one of the very best beach holidays ever! We took the ferry from Denarau to the Yasawas, because we wanted to see a bit more of the islands, which was a great decision. After 2,5 hours we changed to the smaller boat that took us to Viwa Island. As we approached the island we saw the white sandy beaches and we passed the small village, before reaching paradise. The staff welcomed us on the beach with a song, followed by a swift check-in by Onnie and before we knew it we were in our bure. Here a soothing foot massage by Maria and Sai awaited us. The bure was very comfortable and spacious, offering a large veranda with comfy lounge chairs and a view of the beach and 50 shades of blue of the Pacific Ocean. We decided to switch off the AC and open all the louvre windows for the rest of the stay, which was perfectly comfortable. The sandy white beach at Viwa was just perfect... in front of our bure we had our own beach loungers, beach towels, hammock and shady umbrella. Immediately in front of the lodge is some of the best snorkelling, but we also joined each of the guided snorkelling excursions to various reefs around the island. The visibility was excellent, in some places up to 40 meters or so. We saw lots of turtles, beautiful colorful corals, huge clams, rays, moray eels, pufferfish and much more. Compared to the other places in the Indian Ocean the coral around Fiji was very colorful. We also went deepsea fishing one morning, something that I wanted to do for a long time. We spend 4 hours at sea and (after a bit of struggle) I managed to catch my first yellow fin tuna (17kgs). Bucketlist... check! It made for some wonderful fresh sashimi for all guests that evening. Perfect! Don't miss a visit to the nearby village, which is home to many of the fabulous staff of Viwa Island Resort. The team at Viwa Island Resort surprised me with a big cake for my birthday, following by lots of singing and dancing and a wonderful, romantic and unforgettable beach dinner. Speaking of food... it was delicious. We did not have a single meal during those 8 nights that we did not like. Breakfast, lunch, dinner... all meals were perfect for us. What impressed us most of all however was the staff at the resort. All of them (and yes.. I mean ALL of them) were so friendly and welcoming and fun. The service was warm and generous. From the staff in the restaurant to the bar ladies, the massage ladies, Vata and of course Sheung. You all made our stay truly unforgettable and we will definitely be back, despite the fact that it is a 30 hour journey from our home on the other side of the planet. It is worth it. Highly recommendable. Vinaka!!
We just finished a 5 night stay at Viwa Island Resorts and have never felt so relaxed or well taken care of. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. Everyone is smiling and always offering to help. The excursions are informative, safe, and very worthwhile. The guided snorkel excursion, in particular, was outstanding. The guide showed us amazing coral, fish, and a sea turtle! Back at the actual resort, everything is top notch. The bures are luxuriously fitted and have great amenities for such a remote island. Roy showed us around to see the solar farm and explain how they are able to provide such a quality experience while keeping an eye on conservationism. The beach and surrounding reef are amazing; the sand is soft, the water is warm, and the fish are plentiful. The views of distant islands and waves crashing off of the outer reef only increase the natural beauty. Sheung and Roy are always happy to talk to all of the guests and share interesting stories and details about the resort, scuba diving, the reef, and even their own personal journeys. The rest of the staff were equally welcoming and kind. Talking about rugby, daily life, or about home was a daily occurrence and always enjoyable. The way the staff take care of their guests is astounding and will make you feel nothing but happy. We cannot say enough positive things about this wonderful resort and the great staff/owners.
