"Best Scenery Around"

We stayed three nights here and I must really say, fantastic! A certain amount of that was due to Mother Nature cooperating...:-) There is so much to do and see during the winter. We were luck in that during our stay is snowed eight inches so there was a fresh blanket for the eyes to feast upon. It was so beautiful. We stayed in the lodge and not in the cabins so I can only tell you how the rooms in the lodge were. I thought they were great! Our room was on the 3rd floor (3011). While a view from the other side may have been more inviting, our view was still pretty nice. We had a small fridge in the room and two queen beds. My wife rented snowshoes all three days and had a blast. There is also a small ice skating area right next to the lodge and cross country skiing. Or you can just sit in the lodge and read or simply enjoy the snow fall. They also offer several snow vehicle tours from the lodge. We went on the Stars, Steam and Soundscapes tour that is conducted during the evening. I would highly recommend! It was one of the most incredible experiences that I have ever had. You can not describe listing to Jewel Geyser erupt in total darkness, incredible.

"Winter wonderland adventure"

We visited here for 3 nights as part of the couples Winter Wonderland Adventure with Xanterra. The rooms are lovely, comfortable and roomy. The bar was a good place to relax after a day of exploring. The restaurant was good but many dishes have tomato (I am allergic) which limited choices. Try the snow shoe guided walk, it was fun and not hard to do. You can watch old faithful go off from the National Park Centre behind a glass wall (nice and warm). Staff are friendly.

"Christmas in Narnia!"

We've experienced a winter break in Yellowstone before at Mammoth Hot Springs and loved it. This time we saved our pennies to stay at the Snowlodge (it's not cheap but because there are so few people in the park it feels exclusive). We stayed one night in Mammoth so we'd be ready for the early morning snow coach to the Snowlodge. The snow coaches are great fun and the transportation run as tour so you really get good value for money, with stops at places of interest and restrooms. The journey takes around 4 hrs. I had been concerned when some reviewers complained about the new coaches being too hot and windows icing up so visibility was poor. They use the vents/heat to keep windows clear and also provide cloths. Wear layers to take off on board (but drivers check on passenger comfort and turn heat down when required). I found a credit-type card useful to clear windows but mostly they stayed clear - and what a view!! Such a stunningly beautiful valley of snow-veiled trees and thermals. Arriving before our room was ready gave us the chance to spend a couple of hours exploring the terraces - magical!! And all to ourselves. We chose to stay in a Western Cabin, preferring the rustic experience. It was great fun, very clean, with comfortable beds and enough space for 4 adult family members. The bathroom was very small but had a decent hot shower. Deciding on which tours was a difficult. They aren't cheap and the experience may well be at the mercy of the weather. We opted for the Canyon tour, and luckily weather was just about good enough to return via Yellowstone Lake and Hayden Valley. Scenery was simply amazing. We also opted for the Steam and Stars evening tour but it was cloudy so no stars, but an informative adventure non-the-less. Hiring cross country skis was great fun! I'm not an experienced ski-er but my son gave us some guidance. Quality of ski/snowshoe rentals at the Bear Den was good. They offer tuition if required. The recommended novice route is a 6 mile loop to Biscuit Basin and the scenery was incredible passing thermals, river and through woodland. We wore standard winter layers, balaclavas, sunglasses and packed snacks, water and hot chocolate. It took us about 4 hours at a super leisurely pace. We enjoyed our meals at the Obsidian restaurant and loved the welcoming, Christmas ambiance of the lodge, the decorated trees, hot cider and biscuits, fire pit and ice rink, not to mention a visit from Santa.

"Cabins in winter are cozy and warm!"

We stayed in a cabin while friends stayed in the Snow Lodge between Christmas and New Years 2017. We walked through the snow to and from the cabin/Snow Lodge. A short refreshing walk. If you don't want to/can't walk to and from then stay in the Snow Lodge. Our cabin was very warm; we had to keep turning the heat down. An extra wall heater in the bathroom made it very toasty. We had a low chest of drawers and walk in closet. there was an extra blanket/pillow. There was a wall-mounted hairdryer although I was told on the phone there was no hairdryer. The lighting could have been a little brighter. Knowlng there was no TV in the room we downloaded movies on a tablet for the 3 nights but didn't watch any of them. After snowshoeing, safari snow coach tour, and night snow coach tour we were too tired. There was no fridge or microwave. The beds were a little soft for us. If you go: Cabins are $100 less expensive than the Snow Lodge. You have to ask the front desk to deliver your luggage (by snow mobile) or use a sled yourself (with snow you don't realize you're pulling all that weight) Take a flashlight or use your phone light for the walk at night.

"Christmas in Yellowstone"

Amazing family vacation!! We stayed in Yellowstone 5 days over Christmas holiday. Absolutely beautiful!! Extremely cold. 20 degrees outside and occasionally -10 with windchill. Come with extreme cold winter apparel. The food was ok. There is a small restaurant that gives you a time to show up for meals otherwise there is a grill/fast food like service. The rooms are nice. No kitchen, or TV. Wifi is pretty minimal so don’t count on any real media use. We had spotty cell phone service. There are great excursions available through the Snow Lodge including snow shoeing, cross country skiing, day hikes, Madison animal viewing excursion (saw bison, wolves, bald eagles, elk etc-awesome trip!) and others. There is a little ski shop at the lodge where snow shoes, skis, sleds and other things can be rented. The park allows about 100 people into the park to the Snow Lodge a day unless you come by snow mobile which are available at the South and West entrance. The park has to be entered via snowcat which costs approx $300 per person round trip. The Lodge booked up extremely quick for Christmas time so plan to book as soon as the time is available. Absolutely an unforgettable trip!!
