"Cozy and friendly"

We stayed in a second-floor double inside the lodge. The room was a tight fit for our family of four with all our parkas, etc, but clean and comfortable. And we were really only in the room to sleep. The rest of the lodge was spacious and accommodating. We read by the fire in the lobby. We appreciated the hot cider and fresh cookies every afternoon when we came in cold from cross country skiing or hiking around the geysers. And the little ice skating rink was picturesque and perfect for the kids. The ski shop was friendly and helpful. It was a wonderful experience. We hope to go again soon and stay longer.

"Decent, no-frills accommodations in a place with few alternatives"

My family and I stayed here for a few nights to close out the March 2018 winter season. My mother stayed in her own room, while my wife, 3 1/2-year-old, 1 1/2-year old and I stayed in another room. Both rooms were Premium Lodge Rooms located in the Snow Lodge building. In this case, the term "Premium" is quite a stretch. Accommodations are BASIC. Rooms are almost uncomfortably hot even with the thermostat turned way down. The blanket-style comforter is remarkably thin, so if you enjoy sleeping in a cooler room snuggled under thick & warm blankets, that's not going to happen here. The in-room furniture is small, so if you need to use a CPAP while sleeping, space on the one bedside nightstand will be at a premium. WI-FI IS NOT FREE, and is charged by the hour ($5), for a day ($12), or for three days ($25). This is ridiculous--even Amtrak offers free wi-fi. Considering the high cost to stay per night at this property, wi-fi should be free. I wouldn't mind if they built this charge directly into a "resort fee," but directly experiencing this charge makes me feel like they're nickel-and-diming me. The dining room offers interesting meals, but they are very poorly executed. YOU MUST MAKE RESERVATIONS IN ADVANCE, or you will experience long wait times. Luckily, we had dining reservations for every night of our stay. One night, I ordered prime rib, prepared medium. When it arrived, it was apparent that they merely cut off a piece of rare/medium rare and finish it on a flat grill in an attempt to get it closer to medium (which they did not). The prime rib is served atop polenta, which makes it difficult to cut and the blood/juices from the meat soaks into the polenta turning it into a pink mush. We ordered the edamame appetizer, which arrived INCREDIBLY salty. Each bean pod was covered with salt, looking like some kind of sugar-crystallized candy. The table next to us experienced the same thing. When I ordered the pork osso bucco (finally, as it was unavailable after two nights despite our 5:30 PM dining reservations on every night), it was not worth the wait. There is nothing "osso bucco-like" about this dish. It's a piece of pork shank that tastes more like smoked ham on a bone, but not in a tasty way. It's an average dish at best, if you're really hungry. The bison spare ribs are surprisingly tasty, but VERY fatty--after removing the fat and bone you will be left with meat amounting to significantly less than 1/2 the original size of the piece. My mother's soup arrived lukewarm and the vegetables had been long overboiled. The root vegetable side (with the bison spare ribs, I think) were cut with absolutely no culinary skill (like a child might do), and lacked proper seasoning (maybe it was dusted with a basic Italian seasoning). Adding insult to injury, the menu items are on the higher-priced side. For the money, this hotel and dining experience is not worth it. However, you are paying purely for LOCATION. There is no real, comparative alternative in the immediate area, which is why this property gets away with such nonsense. I would stay here again purely for the value of the location.

"Not cheap but a lot of character"

The architect did a fine job to design this hotel. It's all you would expect from a Yellowstone lodge. The room was fine and the bedding was nice (if you love deep soft mattresses - know some people are strongly against them). The location is excellent (a couple of minutes walking to the Old Faithful geyser). Could not make it better. However, the restaurant is definitely the weak point and a real issue. 15 minutes waiting for all dinner (with reservation), 15 minutes waiting for breakfast (off season). I can't really understand it - except that either the organization is weak (it seems to be the case) or the restaurant room is far from adequate (it appears quite obvious). At first, it's surprising then it becomes annoying. Certainly when this is repeated everyday and the center of discussion for all the guests waiting outside.

"Chose another hotel if you can"

Obviously needs some refreshing, everything seems to date back from 50 years ago. Average food quality; gluten-free options available. Problem is that even you come on time for meals (based on the reservation time they give you - no choice possible), you'll wait between 15 and 30 minutes for being placed; this seems to be a good joke for the staff in charge - we did not shore the same impression. Generator way too noisy - you need ear plugs to sleep. the hotel is way too expensive

"Winter in Yellowstone is incredible, nice pub, dreadful food, inconsistent attitudes"

Staying at the interior of Yellowstone Park is a special treat for any winter recreation enthusiast or geyser nut. I am both. There really is nothing like skiing to a geyser in the sparkling 10-degree cold of a Wyoming winter. Fortunately, we were there for the natural aspects surrounding the Snow Lodge, not the facilities or dining. Mother nature did not disappoint, but Xanterra did. We enjoyed awesome backcountry and nordic skiing, tons of wildlife, and outrageous scenery. The backcountry skiing around the Snow Lodge is low-angle fun, no avy gear necessary - fun all-day excursions if you like. We extended our stay to 7 nights when a winter storm dropped 18 inches of fresh snow that we couldn't bear to leave. But, the food was not good. It is such a shame, but the concessionaire, Xanterra, has a monopoly on the services, so there is little incentive to care. The staff was 55% great, 25% good, but there were some bad apples. Most staff issues seemed to be poor training - they just didn't know any better. The bar is nice and has a good selection of interesting wines. The 9 oz. pour was perfect after a day of skiing and geyser watching! Food is important when you are skiing a lot, so I was very disappointed with the dining offerings and will avoid ever eating there again. We stayed in the Lodge Cabins, which were basic but fine. You can't cook in the room, so next time we'll bring a tea kettle and dehydrated camp food, etc. We'll back to Snow Lodge in the winter, despite Xanterra. Yellowstone is a national treasure.
