"Diving at Don's"

There is a bunch of great places to stay in Bonaire if you are a diver. What sets Capt Don's apart is the friendly service and attention to detail. Clean tidy ocean view rooms, and a great pool. A good size locker area for storing your dive gear The restaurant on site, Rumrunner has a decent menu, its not cheap, but nothing on Bonaire is,they pretty much import everything. I just got back from a great trip, the first week of Oct.

"Another good trip at Captain Don's"

After a break of 3/4 years we returned here for a week's dive break. The rooms have had a good refurb, complete redecoration, new fixtures and fittings and a new bathroom! Most of the staff are the same and provide a great service and even remember you from your last visit. The food was consistently good in Rum Runners restaurant when we ate there. The only negative was not down to the hotel but to the remnants of Hurricane Matthew which caused 2 days of tremendous sea surge which put the dive docks out of action - all back to normal now! Would always return to Captain Don's, everything about it is comfortable!

"Mixed feelings about this resort"

We booked for 16 nights here in a one bedroom bungalow with a full kitchen. The first bungalow they put us in had the wardrobe doors falling off and they couldn't be opened. There was also a noisy ice machine attached to the outside wall and very uncomfortable patio furniture. They very quickly put us in a two bedroom bungalow with access to just one of the bedrooms which was absolutely fine. The patio had more comfortable furniture on it which suited us as we ate all our meals outside. Our first room was 1023 and our second room was 1013. Our full kitchen comprised a gas hob with 4 rings, a cooker, a toaster (although we had to request that as it wasn't in the room initially),and a fridge/freezer. Talking to other guests at the end of the holiday who were staying in similar bungalows in the 2000's, I found out that they had much better facilities which would have made our stay easier. They had an outside sink, really useful in a dive resort, (we didn't) they had plenty of outside drying space (we had 8 feet of washing line - so bring your own pegs), they had a kettle, microwave and hot water in the kitchen (we didn't). We cooked a lot of out meals and used the kitchen a lot so having to heat up water to wash up was a bit of a pain! The kitchen had the minimum of utensils for 4 people so cooking was rather challenging! A real positive for the bungalows was the fact that they were very spaced out and we had lots of privacy. Our bungalow could certainly do with being refurbished although the A/C was quiet and efficient. You pay $6 for the use of the room safe. If you lose a beach towel you would get charged $20. Our cleaner came in daily and did an excellent job. There is a well stocked shop in the resort. A bar, a restaurant and a pool with sun loungers. The bar served cocktails with really cute cocktail sticks with fish, birds animals on which you keep as souvenirs! We had a couple of OK meals in RumRunners as well. The main reason we chose Captain Don's was because of the diving and we found the staff to be less than friendly. Maybe that's because we were shore diving and not boat diving. However, it would have been nice to have my smiles and cheery greetings responded to!! The storage area is down a ramp which leads on to the boat dock and also the pier for diving the house reef. The lockers are half size and are OK for a BCD, regs and fins but you need to bring your own lock. Nothing would dry in there and the BCD was as wet in the morning as it had been when we put them away. There is very limited space for drying wet suits so they need to be taken back to our bungalow and as we had very limited drying space outside that made it more inconvenient. There were two car spaces allocated for 15 minute loading of tanks and dive equipment. Sometimes delivery vehicles and staff were using these spaces. We have stayed at other places for diving in Bonaire and had been able to park much closer to the tanks, which would have been more convenient. I think that Captain Don's would suit boat divers more than shore divers. Hurricane Matthew visited us while we were there and the resort staff were excellent at providing information and additional things eg. extra towels in case of flooding, candles etc. The dive staff had to make the locker area out of bounds as the waves were throwing up a lot of boulders and rocks onto the paved area and into the locker area. Diving was unavailable for three days and then a couple of days later for a further two or three days. There was no advance notice that the lockers would be unavailable so that took us by surprise. I felt sorry for the dive staff who dismantled the piers for Matthew, then reassembled them afterwards, only to have to do it all over again when the surge, swell and waves appeared two days later. We wouldn't return to Captain Don's.

"Great diving in a beautiful setting."

If you want excellent diving in a beautiful setting, this is the place for you! This is my second time at Captain Don's. The dive masters, Jason and Sherman, were excellent! My group had 2 boat dives in the morning with the crew, where they took us to beautiful diving spots. Jason and Sherman gave excellent tips on getting the most out of our locations. In the afternoon, we could shore dive, lounge by the pool or rest. Their restaurant is right on the water so you have incredible views for all meals. The landscaping is lush and blooming. They have remodeled the rooms but my only complaint - the new beds are VERY firm.

"Anniversary and birthday trip September 2016"

Just back from two weeks at Captain Dons Habitat, had a great time and the room (New Junior Suite) was perfect with plenty of space, and a room and patio with a fantastic view of the ocean. The room is well furnished with large bathroom and shower. Large bed much bigger than a kingsize as well a large settee and flat TV (which we didn't use at all). Plenty of cupboard space a very large electronic safe (would hold at least 2 large laptops and camera, wallets and a small bag, a sink worktop area with some cupboards with plates, mugs, glasses and cutlery. There was also a filter coffee maker and a microwave oven. We didn't cook in the room as the on site restaurant Rum Runners serves really good and well price food. We opted to book a breakfast package which was really good value given the choice of foods available. The patio was large and tiled with a table two chairs and two loungers and a drying area. The dive shop is an integral part of the hotel and well managed and easy to use. The dive boats are fast and hold up to twenty divers and dive sites only a short ride away. Dive staff are very helpful and can sort most equipment issues if they arise. My reg started a freeflow and this was quickly resolved back at the shop. We found a seahorse on the house reef and a few days later a Harlequin Pipefish. We found squid close by the divers highway (A rope that goes from the Divers Dock right down the reef (held above the coral by bottles) to the bottom about 130 feet down or so. We also saw several turtles on the house reef and enjoyed diving it several times a day. We didn't hire a car as the variation of the house reef and boat dives was enough for us. The hotel is directly on the seafront and it has a rocky shore, there is a small beach called seven bodies beach, the name gives you the size of the beach. It is reached by a few steps down from the frontage. Swimming inthe sea is easy from Baby dosck with steps to get in or out of the water. Most divers do giant stride from the dock to get into the water. The reef start about 100 yards away from the dock. We only had dinner out once as the dinner at Habitat was really excellent. A taxi into town and back cost $20 for both ways which I thought was reasonable. We also walked with a Super market five minutes walk north of the hotel and a chemist, dive shop, bank with ATM and restaurants just 5 minutes walk to the south of the hotel. We had lunch twice at Between Two Buns which is close to the bank, this was really well priced and two large baguettes and four Amstel Brights cost just $28. Would have been $14 without the Brights. Overall we had a great stay, the hotel staff are very helpful and managed by the very capable Claire Sealy. We did have a problem on our penultimate day with Tropical Storm Matthew, but the hotel staff had plans and we had candles and matches in case of a power cut and extra towels to stop any rain from been driven by the storm winds into the rooms. The hotel gave clear instructions on how to stay safe including clearing the patio furniture into the room to prevent them being thrown into the windows. Claire and her staff were around on the worst night when 5 inches of rain and high winds were expected. I also saw two Dutch soldiers checking into the hotel. So we felt safe and the storm did little damage by the next morning. The storm then turned in to Hurricane Matthew and headed further North East, but diving from the hotel stopped for a couple of days, we only missed one day as we were heading home.
