"Two weeks in paradise"

   29-04-2017
WOW! Not enough room here to adequately give credit where credit is due. What an awesome place. Staff incredibly friendly, dive staff very informative and helpful. Gear lockers, beautiful grounds, and the sunsets were amazing! We have been to Bonaire multiple times and usually stay at another place, but we booked late, and Captain Don's was the only place that could accommodate our 2 week schedule. This was our first and only 2 week vacation, we went in high season January 21, 2017 thru February 4th. When we got to our first Saturday, when we would normally be packed and headed to the airport, I looked at my wife and said "we've got another week of this!" We had a second floor suite facing the ocean, and were forced to watch 14 magnificent sunsets! While we had those at the other resort we use to stay at, having a full restaurant and bar, not to mention boat diving, at our convenience was great. This was also the first time we have done any boat diving, WOW Klein Bonaire! Sorry Belmar, we will always book with Captain Don's. Just a quick tip about your vacation in general. If you get a dive and drive package which is common, DO NOT wait until Saturday morning to fill your truck to turn it in. There is ONE gas station, the line is LONG, and you have to prepay at the window prior to pumping, and then again after pumping. Most vacation packages fly in and out on Saturday. Fill your truck the day before, and don't drive it except to turn it in. I didn't want to get back in the long line at the window a second time, so I "guessed" how much cash it would take to fill the truck. I was shy less than a quarter tank, and Avis charged me $77 for less than a quarter tank! Captain Don's is our new place to stay while in Bonaire, our favorite dive destination!

"Biggest difference between staff of hotel and of restaurant ever experienced"

   22-04-2017
Captain Don's Habitat is a modest size resort and looks pretty enough. However, it is rather far from town so you're kind of stuck. Hotel and restaurant have a different management. And boy is that obvious! It means you have to open a separate account at the restaurant if you don't want to pay cash every time. You cannot charge anything to your room if you don't. However, it also means friendly, proactive, exemplary (really!) staff at the restaurant but staff at the hotel who already put a face on when they see you approaching the front desk. I notified the front desk of the shower gel in my room needing a refill three times. When I left it was still empty. In order to get an ironing board to your room, you almost need diplomatic negotiating skills! Never seen such a big different in one resort. There was a coffee maker in the room - but never did any coffee/tea/sugar or cream appear.

"There's a reason we keep coming back"

   15-04-2017
This was our 4th spring break trip to Bonaire, staying at Captain Don's Habitat, in the last 5 years. We booked a single boat dive per day package, with unlimited shore diving, and nitrox for 3 divers. This year was the first time we rented a truck and explored the islands dive sites on our own. That decision turned out to be the best one we made... the boat dives were great and divemasters like Sherman and Zimba do a great job, but the beauty of Bonaire is the freedom to dive where you want and when you want. Our trip worked mostly like this: Early breakfast, off for two shore dives in the truck with a tailgate lunch from the local grocery store. Then, back to Captain Don's for the afternoon boat. After that, either driving off for a couple more shore dives, or an easy swim off Captain Don's house-reef. 4-5 dives per day. We dove with our younger daughter on most dives, but she sat out a few. The staff at Captain Don's was helpful everytime we needed something... if there were no more 63 cu foot Nitrox tanks full, they'd run over and fill a couple for us. I challenged my daughter to find a Seahorse, a Frogfish, and a yellow-headed jawfish male holding eggs in it's mouth. She consulted with Martin, one of the dive-shop managers, who told her what sites to go to and the general area to look. Knowing we were exploring the island on our own, he even drew her a little reef-map. And yes, she found all three subjects by the third day of diving! We are experienced divers who don't like a lot of "control" from divemasters and don't like to dive in big groups. Captain Don's works well for that whether we were on the boats or diving out of our rental truck. I think what I like best is the freedom Captain Don's offers... it's in their slogan "the home of diving freedom." We made 6 boat dives and the DM's were all cool with us doing our own thing rather than tromping along with the group. I didn't once hear a dive master clanging on his tank to point something out (something I detest). I did 26 dives over 6 days of diving... all but one were over 60 minutes long. No pressure to hurry up and get back on the boat when you're diving from a truck, but even the boat dives were usually 70 minutes or so. Bonaire's reefs are nice. Not like Indonesia or the South Pacific... if you're looking for swarming schools of large pelagics, sharks, mantas, whales, or all those other "once in a lifetime" diving encounters, you probably won't find them in Bonaire. But the reefs are healthy, free of trash, and have lots of color. I'm a photographer underwater, and shot probably 80% macro on this trip (as I've done the last few years). Bonaire definitely has lots of subjects for the macro photographer from mantis shrimp, the blennies, to eels. Bonaire claim to fame, for many divers, is that is one of the most reliable places in the Caribbean to find the longsnout seahorse and the longlure frogish. Don't get me wrong, they're not easy to find, but a with a good divemaster to show you, or a lot of perseverance, you can find them here. I've not had nearly that luck in other parts of the Caribbean. Back to the resort itself: The breakfast at the resort is basic, but we're not really there for the food. It was healthy and plentiful. Eggs cooked to order, pancakes, bacon, sausauge, fruit, breads, and yogurt. We ate a few dinners at Captain Don's house restaurant, rum-runners, but took the truck into town and found some nice restaurants too. The rooms are fine. We had the two bedroom garden view suite with it's own kitchen. Spacious. The beds are not the most comfortable, but its the Caribbean. The AC worked great... so well that we found ourselves turning it down at night because it was too cold. The housekeeping service was good and showers were always hot. The wifi was surprisingly good and didn't drop at all during the week we were there. I expect we'll be back next year, renting a truck to drive and dive Bonaire again!

"Diving on Bonaire"

   10-04-2017
Great place for divers. We didn't stay on property, but did several boat dives every day. Great operation. Nice guys! Awesome dives. Dive package was well worth our experience. Anxious to go back! We loved our time on Bonaire.

"Amazing all round dive destination!"

   29-03-2017
We stayed for two weeks in Captain Don's, making 33 dives over 12 days - everything was just as good as we would have liked - staff, food, accommodation, location, weather, even the sea creatures cooperated to make our time there complete. We saw mantas, sting rays, turtles, seahorses, giant green morays and myriad other fishes. It was such an excellent experience that we're already trying to book up for October!!!
