"Diving"

   09-12-2016
This is our third visit to Bonaire and first stay at Captain Don's. We are here first and foremost to dive--with that said, the dive shop and staff were excellent. They were extremely knowledgeable and helpful and genuinely wanted to ensure we were happy with our dive experience. The room was adequate--dive simple--but housekeeping lacked in that our coffee mugs, utensils, and glasses were never cleaned or exchanged. As the week wore on, we received fewer and fewer towels in the bathroom. I think the largest disconnect, however, was in the lack of cohesiveness across the property.

"Restaurant Personnel"

   07-12-2016
Our flight got in late and most restaurants were closed in Bonaire. Capt Dons restaurant had been closed for over half hour but the manager saw that we were really hungry and cooked a wonderful pizza for us. It was the "Parma" and was delicious. Over the last 20 years we have never been disappointed at Capt Dons, always tremendous food and great service!

"October 2016 dive trip"

   01-12-2016
Dove with Captain Dons for 15 boat dive trips over 8 days. Overall - very professional and organized operation. The BOATS are exceptional. Only reason why not a 5 star rating was that the boat size does allow a number of divers to go on each dive. Can be crowded on full boats. The staff - what can I say - very proud of their reef and they take care of it!!! They are very knowledgeable about the dive sites and will go out of their way to find you the one thing that you want to see diving. The dive operation fixed a leaking hose for me - FREE! The dive operation assisted us with getting to dive with a competitor on the East Side of the ISLAND - a MUST do for anyone traveling to Bonaire. The staff provided very honest reviews/opinions about the east coast diving. We stayed at the hotel for only one night and can say that the rooms are basic and clean and well situated. Great over-all experience. Scott and Brandi Oregon USA

"Great Dive Trip"

   30-11-2016
Really enjoyed our time here. One could not ask for a more convenient diving experience. The reef is 75’ or so off shore and one can just strap on a tank any time they desire and go dive. The tanks are always staged down by the pier and the lockers are also right there. We did a boat dive but I found the diving at the property as good as the boat dive. Rooms were fairly nice and functional. Ours had a small sink and microwave and a small refrigerator. The restaurant was good and no complaints with the bar or service. We did eat at a couple of other restaurants on the island and the food was quite good (surprisingly good for a smaller island) but as with all islands a bit pricy.

"Excellent for what it is - an amazing resort geared for competent divers"

   28-11-2016
My wife and I recently travelled to Bonaire for the first time, and elected to stay at Don's for a full week. We are both certified scuba divers, but will typically only dive one or two days on a week-long trip for most of our island destinations. We are definitely NOT "hard core" divers, but just enjoy that as one of many activities on a vacation. Bonaire is a great island to visit, especially for divers. Having been all over the world, I would rank this as the best diving destination anywhere, period. Snorkeling is also good, but many of the reefs begin at around 20 feet deep, so the options can be limited on what you see up close. Captain Don's does have a decent little snorkeling reef that is about a two hundred foot swim up the shore, and my last night I saw eel, puffer fish, and squid, all in water less than 10 feet deep. The "house reef" in front of Don's is amazing for diving, and has great stuff to see from about 30 feet down to 120 feet both directions (including some nice topography and a cliff / wall). The unlimited tank diving is a fantastic deal, and my wife and I wound up doing much more diving than we have anywhere else, mostly because it was inexpensive AND absolutely excellent. We also rented a truck and dove at sites around the island (favorites were Hilma Hooker wreck, which happens to also have plenty of reef and life to see, and the nearby Alice in Wonderland - truly felt like we were exploring another world). We did a boat dive at the small Klein Bonaire island, and saw sea turtles. The food in Bonaire is NOT always expensive; most of our meals were excellent and were less than $15 each outside of the hotel. One other "pro tip" - the national park stops entries at 2:30PM, so we did not get to see that (arrived just after that stopped admission). Would have been nice if the hotel mentioned that when describing how you get "free" admission to the park with your $25 orientation dive-tage, or if the park's website would mention it. Anyway, Bonaire is a wonderful destination; now on to more about the hotel. We stayed in one of the Deluxe Junior Suites. The ocean view was awesome; the water was close enough where I easily could have thrown a rock in the ocean. The room was clean and modern. The king bed and pillows were quite comfortable. There were no musty smells. We did spot several small roaches when we arrived, and the hotel was very responsive and treated the room immediately upon request. After the first day, we didn't see any more bugs. The room is not what I would call "plush"; you will not find a towel rolled up to look like a swan or anything like that. But it is clean and comfortable, which is what is important to me. The air conditioner works great and cools the room down at night, which helped me get great sleep. There is a fridge, coffee maker, and microwave along with some basic cups and plates. There were no coffee filters, so we had to buy those at the "Kong" grocery store that was about a 5 minute walk down the road. Oh yes, and internet service was good and reliable, at least in our room (#34 - upstairs room, definitely a good one if available!). The Run Runners restaurant at the hotel is decent. The lunch pulled pork sandwich and burgers were delicious, and reasonably priced (especially considering the amazing view and fun with watching the giant iguanas roaming the wall). The pizza was surprisingly good, and also reasonably priced; for all of these items, you can expect to pay under $15 each. There are plenty of higher-priced dishes on the menu. My only complaint with the restaurant was breakfast: I tried it once, and it was just a bad experience. We arrived an hour before it closed, but many of the food items were already gone. I asked for more pancakes, but only got one tiny one that was hard and just terrible. They were out of potatoes, and had some unflavored scrambled eggs. After eating a plate of those the waitress came over and asked if I would like an omlette, which I found out was included with the buffet. If we hit the buffet at 7am instead of 9am I would have probably been happy, but the fact that they took our money but did not replenish basic items like potato wedges or pancakes was annoying to say the least. But considering that was the "worst" experience at the hotel, I would say overall we had a great stay. Also, note that there are several places to eat outside of the hotel within easy walking distance, so you will not starve at Captain Don's, even if you do not have a rental vehicle. We did rent a truck for a total of two days directly from the Budget office located on the property. This ran less than $50 a day grand total for everything, and was well worth it. If I had to do it again, I would probably get a taxi from the airport ($15 one way), stay and dive at the resort for a few days, and then rent a truck for the last 3 days of a trip and turn it in directly at the airport. The dive operation is run by friendly guys, but make no mistake - the resort is geared towards more advanced divers. I am spoiled and used to having my hand held for boat dives where they hook everything up for you. Not the case at Don's; you are responsible for checking your tank's air pressure on the dive boat, for example. That is just fine with me; I would rather pay a little less and take more responsibility, but this will not be appealing for some people. Honestly, if you don't know how to assemble your dive gear and check your tank pressure, perhaps you shouldn't be swimming around 100 feet underwater! On our last day I realized I left a dive light in one of our rented BCDs, and asked at the dive shop if they found it. They searched the BCDs, but no luck. Well, right before our taxi picked us up, one of the guys ran out and proudly showed he did find the light (out of giant racks of BCDs and equipment). He didn't have to keep looking, and he could have kept the light, so that was quite revealing at the character of these guys. They may not hold your hand, but if you really need help, they will be there for you. So what if you aren't a diver? Well, Captain Don's does have decent snorkeling from their dock. And you can hop on any of the dive boats for around $15 and snorkel at whatever the dive destination is for the boat. There are lounging chairs where you can sit on the wall above the ocean and read a book. Internet service works fine, they have a bar, and they have a decent pool. So yes, if you are not a diver, you can still have a good time. It may not be as good of a time if you had a normal sand beach, but that is not what Bonaire is known for. Just go in with the right expectations, and you will have a good time. In summary, we had a great visit, and will return to Captain Don's for our next scuba trip. Thanks for reading my terribly lengthy review, and if you have any questions feel free to send a message to me and I will give an honest reply.
