"Love Love Love Cayo Largo"

This was our 6th trip to Cuba, first time at Cayo Largo stayed the week of March 4 to 11, it did not disappoint us. Yes the Sol Cayo Largo is an older hotel, but so are the other hotels in Cayo Largo so do not expect to find new furnishings or brand new walk in shower bathrooms. However the rooms are nicely furnished and the staff do a great job of keeping them clean. The hotel is small and the grounds are gorgeous and well taken care of. Yes the food was not the best we have had, but we always found something we enjoyed and they do change up the buffet items. The restaurant staff are very friendly, shout out to Nestor and Amaryllis and Jose at the snack bar. We go to Cuba for the beaches and for the relaxation. The beach at the Sol did not disappoint. There were a great selection of papalas at the beach and you can walk for kilometers either way. The one main plus is how close to the airport and how close Parisio beach (#4 out 25 beaches on Trip Advisor) and Sirenas beach are to the hotel, short taxi ride at 2ccu each one way or $35 all day ATV rental. If you are looking for a place to sit back and relax this is the perfect island and the Sol Cayo Largo is the perfect hotel. We would definitely return to the Sol!!

"Three weeks of R&R"

Our Stay Was 3 weeks from Jan. 5th untill Jan. 26th. We would like to say that this is our 14th year comming to Cayo largo and we would like to start off by thanking Celia and everyone at the front desk, Ivo, Noel, Nester and everyone at the snack bar. our maid Judy and George at the Ranhon. Mario and his friends at the bar. To all Canadians please note the (EXCHANGE RATE) for $100.00 cdn. was $65.00 CUC. We wondered what happened to Air Canada that they are no longer flying to Cayo Largo, some friends from Alberta, told us that they knew someone who worked at Air Canada and they were told that the Sol Cayo Largo does not meet there high standards anymore. We miss traveling with AC.and hope they will return soon. We traveled with from Montréal to Cayo Largo arrived later that night and took a taxi to the Sol Hotel, We were greeted by Celia with her big smile and our room was ready. We met alot of our good friends while we were there and had a great time. the weather was very nice for the three weeks we were there. The red flag was up the first 2 weeks of our stay, it was very windy but we were still in paridse The grounds are really nice and kept very clean, we would like to say hi and what a great job to Ciamera and the rest of the grounds keepers. Please don`t forget to tip your maid, waiters, servers, and the towel person Edwardo. a tip will really help them out, they make only 20 CUC`s a month and work almost 10 to 12 hour days for 20 days and go back home to there familys for 10 days. Our ocean vieu room was nice and clean every day thanks to Judy and the rest of the maides, The quality of the food this year is way down from last year, they hired a new chef we were told from Mexico. Alot of rice dishes, can fruit, can vegitables.for almost the three weeks we were there. Prices for this hotel should come down because of the food. Again the Cuban people have to be the nicest people you will ever meet, they will go out of there way to help you in any way possible. Again this year we seen alot of People from the Pelicano and from the Vila Lindamar eating almost everyday at the snakbar and at the buffet resturant, I think that it is unfair while we pay more to stay at this hotel. We had to ware bracelets for our stay but alot of people had no bracelets and were being served just the same. Over all we had a great time seen alot of Cuban friends and old friends From Canada and will be back agian soon. To the managment, hotel prices should come down because of the food, the price of this hotel is very expensive and is not worth it,

"Nice Beaches - disappointing Resort"

We visited the 'SOL Cayo Largo' March 4 - 11 with Hola Sun. Our Cubana flight to Cayo Largo was delayed, and while the airline supplied us with an in-flight snack we were not thrilled with the older, un-friendly flight crew. Our return flight was delayed by 5 hours, and we arrived back in Toronto at 6:30 AM! We have vacationed in Cuba at various resorts over 40 times and know what to expect. The SOL Cayo Largo, a Melia hotel, was disappointing. The hotel is quite nice, spacious and in a pretty park-like setting with plenty of pool area. The accommodations are numerous 8-unit 2-story buildings spread out. Clean but somewhat dated. The personnel was 70% friendly and 30% unfriendly. The hotel beach and nearby Serena & Paradiso beaches (10-20 minute ride at 5 CUC, a bus & boat ride) are incredible. Unfortunately we had a very windy week and the smooth Caribbean turned into a rough sea. Be aware that there is virtually no snorkeling unless you take a 1 hour Catamaran trip for 25 CUC. Nightly entertainment was good and the bar adjacent to the theatre - too small for that many people - delivered good drinks and cappuccinos. As for the food - that was a disaster. Breakfasts were acceptable although many buffet items were cold. Lunches are primarily served at a pool bar and the Ranchon beach bar. The pool bar with their unfriendly waiters served barely edible pizzas, hamburgers and hot dogs, and they arrived cold on two occasions. The Ranchon was somewhat better without pizzas but freshly grilled burgers, hot dogs and sometimes even chicken or ribs. The chicken pieces were cubes of bones interspersed with little meat - hardly recognizable as chicken. The waiters at the Ranchon were friendly. Night time meals were either at the Buffet or in 2 sit-down restaurants. The choice and quality of the buffet meals was poor. Food was generally cold, little or no green veggies, poor fruit selection, no beef or pork(!), not even a single banana all week. What: no pork or bananas in Cuba - yes, it happened! Warm food options were at the pasta stand and fish-fry stand - and the wait in line was quite long. This was the worst food situation then in any of the lesser star hotels that we stayed at in the past. The food in one of the sit-down restaurants was OK but portions served were small . The sit-down place was overbooked and the waiters didn't know how to cope with that situation. It's a noisy place too! Scuba diving is available from an independent dive shop at the marina. While they quoted me prices and visa options by email - when I went there they didn't take visa, and suddenly the BC and Reg was an additional charge. After dragging my gear on the boat the dive master (he never introduced himself) declared that we didn't do a deep dive outside the reef because it was too rough. I ended up with a 30' shallow and 18' shallower dive at a higher cost then anywhere else in Cuba. To sum things up: the whole trip was our poorest Cuba experience to date.

"Enjoyed our stay, can do better"

We stayed here for the first time and got a room without hot water initially, then asked to be moved to another. The services are average, as well as the food. The grounds are nice and the beach clean (there is a nude section of it, which was a bit of a shock). A trip to the nearby Paraiso beach was the highlight for us - quiet, clean, beautiful.

"Week of R&R"

I would like to begin this review by saying I have traveled to Cuba 13 times. This is our 3rd time to Cayo Largo. Cayo Largo is a place where people come to relax, enjoy the most amazing beaches. You will not find an animation team, you will not hear loud music by the pool or the beach. You will hear a live Cuban band playing for short stints thru out the resort. Visitors to Cayo Largo are friendly, but, for the most part keep to themselves. Keep that in mind when you visit the island. The Sol in my opinionis the nicest of the resorts on the island. We had staff that were so incredible and others - well not so much. The resort is getting tired looking and could do with some sprucing up - in particular the rooms. We come here for the beaches and for the fact that is quiet and laid back. Where this resort let us down is with the food and the service by more than half the staff in the buffet. We have been to Cuba many many times and 100% know what to expect food wise and we are ok with that.......however......this place is the worst food we have ever experienced at a Cuban resort. It saddens me to say this, but, as someone who reads these reviews and appreciates the honesty of the reviews I want people to be prepared for the food experience......eeek. Bottom line for us. We love love love Cayo Largo. If you are coming for R&R and amazing beaches you will never disappointed. If you are expecting the "you don't go to Cuba for the food" we would have been totally happy with that and probably given it 5 rating. Food was our worst Cuban food experience ever.
